just ordered one too ... they do some different sizes too (not sure where you can get them in UK)

I paid £25 for a fibreglass one from Rally design and its rubbish, no hold downs, it doesn\'t seal properly

Oh my god!!! You just bought a batery box from a company about 2 miles away from my house!!!! They are prety good, my dad used to stock these when they were building boats!! Easy to fit:

You should get a webbing strap ane 2 plastic clamps.
screw the plastic clamps level with the outer of the batery tray.
feed the webbing strap throught the clamps and place the batery box over the lot.
screw the batery box to the floor (as the webbing strap is only to hold the lid down!!)
Place the battery in, hook up the conections.
put the lid on and strap it down witht he webbing strap.

Well, i recieved my battery box this morning - only problem is that its too tall to go in the boot! I figure i now have a few options:

1. Get a smaller battery (Which cost a fortune)
2. Cut a chunk out of the parcel shelf and create a little hat in the parcel shelf that fits over the box
3. Cut a chunk out of the parcel shelf and just leave it
4. Remove the space saver spare tyre and put the battery in the hole for the spare tye

What are peoples thoughts? Does any have any other options? It\'s a damn nice battery box, and am well pleased with it.

No! :( So as above, I\'m looking for solutions!

Will the batery itself fit in to the boot??
If it does, the battery box is only (ABS) plastic...... You could reduce the hight of the box using a saw, file the rough edges, then place the batery cover over it all to hide the cut edge????

No, unfortunately not - it\'s the standard sized battery. I bought the box to fit the battery nice and snugly. I am facing up to maybe having to get a smaller, much more expensive battery! I really don\'t want to have to though.

BRAINWAVE   reposition the hinge clips on the parcelshelf so it sits higher where it meets the back of the seat.

That\'s an idea - i\'ll look into that tonight. If that\'s a non starter, i think i might try cutting the parcel shelf. The battery box looks like professional stuff, so it won\'t look that back poking through the parcel shelf.

Or maybe i could do a combination of the two ideas! :D

I\'m now thinking about scrapping that idea and going for a nice compact (but expensive!) red top battery. Does anyone know a good place to get these from?

Well, apparently, the red top batteries can be mounted sideways as well as vertically, without leakage. Apparently, they won\'t if leak in a crash. £80 though!

About the same cost as a new wet bat then?
Lot\'s lighter tooo and  beter for Cen. of gravity laying down :Thumbs-up

So has anyone on here got a red top battery relocated to the boot...or anywhere else for that matter?

Why not take out the space saver wheel ,  mount the battery there and get a can of tyre foam,  like BMW are doing on some cars.    Plus think of the weight saving .  Plus I hope you are going too fit an inline fuse as close to the battery as you can get it  .

Thats an idea - it\'s just that i\'ve been a bit wary of running without a spare. Mind you, i\'ve done it plenty of times before in different cars!

So what\'s this tyre foam stuff then?
Title: Just bought this for my battery relocation
Post by: crispyj on January 30, 2006, 11:34:06 AM
The tyre foam inflates a punctured tyre too allow you to get to a tyre garage.  It is good stuff I have been at a track day and seen some one drive around all day flat out with a tyre filled with this stuff  but I would not recommend it.  There is only one bad point if you get a blow out it it will not work,  that will be a AA job.

Cool - think i might do that then. It\'s cheaper!

If you get a blow out, i think there\'s a good chance there\'s more to worry about than getting home!

Well, i have been working on the battery relocation. i\'m still not sure if I\'m happy with this, as I\'m also considering the varley red top batteries. Just can\'t decide! :p

Anyway, here\'s some pics of what I\'ve done so far. Would appreciate peoples comments or thoughts. Cheers.

Once fitted and working, the plan will be to either make a custom carpet for the boot, or to get one from a crashed FD and cut a hole where the battery box fits.

I\'m using the same battery box (temporarily until a dry battery arrives) but mine\'s mounted behind the rear seat upright. In this position you have access to the spare wheel and the parcel shelf will fit. I\'m using the standard carpet with the foam removed where the battery box sits.

?? Wierd - when i tried mine, my battery box didn\'t fit.

Maybe i didn\'t try it with the carpet removed. May check that.

Yeah - you\'re right. Without the foam, the box does fit under the parcel shelf.

fro - do you have any pictures of you installation?

I\'ll take a couple of pics tomorrow evening. The box is as far forward as you can  go.. the lid fouls the rear strut brace but you can still remove it

I just can\'t make up my mind over this!

I have found an excellently small sized battery: the varley red top 8

It\'s size is: 138mm x 86mm x 101mm This is ideal. However, is the aH and cranking current that is the question mark for me. The amp hours is only 7, and the cranking current is 200amps. Would this be a problem for a rotary? Am I likely to find myself with a flat battery very quickly?

Post by: fro on February 07, 2006, 09:33:17 AM
Nowhere near enough cranking power I\'m afraid. The red top 8 is designed for single seaters which probably wouldn\'t run a starter at all. You\'d get away with a red top 25 though, I ran one in a 200sx no problems, even letting the car sit for weeks on end

Ok, cheers. I will have to get the tape measure out to see if the red top 25 fits then! :p

Nice install there. Wish I could get something sorted! I keep changing my mind! I\'m thinking about a red top battery now!

So, if i went with either a red top 20 (176mm x 84mm x 130mm) or a red top 25 (182mm x 77mm x 168mm) does anyone have any suggestions on where i could put it? Considering i am having a v-mount intercooler kit where the intercooler goes right over to the other side where the battery is currently. I see in the engine bay that there\'s a tiny little shelf thing about 15cm down or so - but i don\'t think it\'s wide enough to squeeze either a 77mm or 84mm wide battery into - so I\'m looking for suggestions!

There is going to be space in the intake side, as the intercooler is not full width. But i would like as much space there as possible for cool and undisrupted air flow. But if all else fails, i could put it there I suppose.

I\'ve modded mine now with parts from an old power tool box (same abs type plastic) and some silicon sealer ! no longer a vented box but a sealed one :) just need to grab a pair of cable glands and a fitting for a drain/breather and its sorted. £6.99 well spent :wiggle

Well, i have just been outside with the tape measure and the torch! Works out that i should have enough space to fit a red top 20 battery in the engine bay, which I am well chuffed about, as it means i do not need to faff about sticking one in the boot!

The excellent thing about these batteries is that they\'re so compact, and you can mount them on their side if necassary! So, I am ordering one tomorrow! :D

Hi Nik,

So how is the battery? Can you recharge it from flat or must you always have a charge in it?? Thinking of going for a 20 or 25, but unsure if the 25 would last any longer, any ideas?

Well! I bought a red top 20 in the end, thinking that i\'d have enough space to mount it in the engine bay - however, once i had fitted the intercooler, there was no space for the battery - so it had to go in the boot anyway! However, it\'s still good, cos it\'s nice and compact. But, due to the length of the cable running through the car, it means there\'s a lot of resistence, which means that it struggles to turn the engine over - but it does manage it, and it manages to start it. So i\'m pretty happy with it all in all.

I haven\'t had the battery long, so fortunately it hasn\'t run down. i have heard conflicting reports that if it runs flat it will never re-charge again, and other people say that they have not had problems. I guess i\'ll find out one day!

Ahh... cool! thanks for the pic.

I read on Robinette that Petit uses a 12 volt, 26 amp battery that has 600 cold cranking amps, it measures 6.5" X 6.9 X 4.9 so a useful benchmark for peeps looking at battery upgrades.

Red Tops closest match is the Red Top 30 which is identical apart from an 850 amp cold cranking or the RT25 but thts only rated to 16 amp.
