Title: Newbie Greeting
Post by: Tomson on September 19, 2003, 11:41:56 AM
Hello All,

Considering selling the Merc and the bike and buying a RX-7.  I have a few questions though please.....

Firstly, do RX-7\'s have rear seats, I won\'t be using them a lot, but if the wife needs to borrow the car she might need to put the baby seat in it.

Also head is a mess after 2 weeks of surfing import sites, who is the best, what do I look out for ?

I want a fairly trick car, although I am aware that films such as \'Fast and Furious\' etc have started to make importers feel they can add a premium to this type of car.  I was looking at Keighley trade Centre\'s website and they seem to have some good examples that are reasonably priced.... http://www.dealer.autotrader.co.uk/_keighleyframe7.htm
Ignore the pink abortion, I am after something mucm more subtle than that.

How do I avoid buying a dog.

Thanks for your help.

Tomson.

Firstly welcome.

Some models do come with (so-called) rear seats. You would struggle to put a child seat in it mind you. They are cramped, and not a lot of space.

As for the importers, there are a couple I would recommend. And not in this order, but worth speaking with all of them. Sorry for those I miss.

Miguel @ New Era Imports
Brian @ Rotary Imports (see banner above)
Ben @ Linney Org
Ross @ Evil Rotor

To name but a few of the trusted people who also own RX-7\'s (not sure about Ben though! Must convert him if not ;))

Dan,

Thanks mate, Those rear seats seem perfect for my son, he is only 22 months - so small and cramped would suit him down to the ground:D

Have just been reading some of the buying advice - very interesting (note to myself ~ search first before asking...doh !)

Thanks,

Tom

Dont expect to pay £6K for a 60-70K mile car and have years of trouble free motoring. Those cars will have often cost F/A in Japan, the FOB costs and shipping probably equating to half the \'value\' of the vehicle... There are SOO many dogs out there to avoid.

PLEASE take some one who knows some thing about the cars with you - its for too easy to fall in love with a body kit and end up buying a P.O.S. for a vastly inflated price; 95% of the companies that you see selling FD\'s DO NOT HAVE A CLUE about these cars! Get ANY car you are really interested in checked out by an independant ROTARY (not the AA or RAC!) specialist - regardless of who you\'re buying it from. Money well spent.

Spend half-decent cash, dont buy the first thing you see - and buget for a rebuild motor in the first 12 months.

That way you\'ll hopefully end up with a good car and an enjoyable entrance into the wonderful world of the Rotor :D

Dont be put off by this rant - these cars are VERY rewarding to own - you wont regret it if you buy a half decent car :) :) :)

Very good points Tea Boy. Often over looked by the first time buyer.
Would you buy a Sony television from a Panasonic dealer and then expect them to fix it when it goes wrong?

Well said Rich,

When buying a rx7 there are some good threads on this forum that will arm you with a lot of useful questions and things to look for.Atleast then you can buy with confidence even though you might not know the rx7 inside out. Depending on where your located i\'m sure there are always people on the forum who own a rx7 that could pop a long to have a look at one with you.
Everytime my son goes in mine he falls asleep within 5 minutes.
Don\'t ask me how with that blitz exhaust ??

Ummm...who they got to write that for them then?

Hopefully it will have a little less toilet-content than the last issue I bought ages ago featuring the Norris Evo - what a load of rubbish :-(

Praise the lord for FF\'s and Zoom...

Just noticed that pink car has After burners, is that the name of some performance part or has it really got a batman style burner on the back!?:D

Would be quite appropiate really, a lot of people call my car the batmobile :)

I must have looked at about 8 3rd gen RX-7\'s between 6k and 7k, and the majority were dogs, some with accident repairs.  I also looked a a UK model with a 140k miles on the clock.  It\'s engine seemed like it was due for another rebuild and it\'s sill was starting to rot, but it was clearly better looked after than any of the cheap imports I saw.

I got disillusioned with what was availble at that price, but maybe I was just unlucky with what I saw.

Eventually I decided to but from an auction in Japan using the internet.   I\'ll just have to keep my fingers crossed until it arrives!

It took me a while to find my one, most the cars I saw at import places were in a complete state to be honest.  Its worth spending the time and making sure you find a nice one.

In the end I paid more than I wanted to, but I found a good car and it was worth going the extra for.

Cheers

Oi, you leave the scoobs alone..... They cant help not being able to drive.... :D

Jap Performance did a buyers guide some time ago. Think they used Gary T\'s car, with quotes from Retechniks. Or was that Banzai that did that???

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses, I think I might have found the car for me - slightly more than the initial £6K - £8K - try almost double !!

But anyway, as discussed above, you get what you pay for etc etc.

Any top tips for where to go for insurance on an modified Imported RX-7.

Am just about to do a search (must learn to do this first !!)

Thanks again

Tom:D

Search for insurance - I expect there are loads of threads on the subject.

Remember - get the car checked out by some one who knows them! £13K or whatever u r contemplating paying is a lot of cash!

Good luck,

£842.06 - AON.

Not bad - not bad at all.

Some more help please..............

http://www.neweraimports.com/stock.htm

The car I am aching to put the money down on is the 1996 Model that Miguel (newera) has for sale.  Styling is very nice and seems to be modified very nicely as well - not to mental, so some reliability left.

Has anyone purchased from Newera and Miguel before, he comes highly recommended.

This is right at the top of my price range (actually a little over), what are your thoughtd on the price of this REX ?  Â£13495, 1996.

thanks,

Tom

Bought my car through Miguel, very helpful and informative through the whole process and picks somes cracking cars :)
I too heard lots of glowing recommendations, especially in rotary circles which is why I went with him.

Can also vouch for the Motormall guys who prepare the car when it comes into the UK, they fitted a bodykit for me and made a great job of it and were very helpful when i was phoning up every other day to see when I could pick her up  :D

Have seen that car on the website, styling looks great;)

Yeah I know white is usually not my colour either - still umming a arring at the moment though....

Am interested also in the Black RX-7 that Matt Gibbs has for sale in the \'for sale\' section - does anyone know if he still has it ?, or is anyone looking to sell their pride and joy - I like buying cars from clubs as they are usually damn fine examples.

He has sold it.

His cars go fast (and they go fast).

I\'m sure they advised you but the best thing to do it work out a spec with iguel and he\'ll find the car for you.  He\'ll work to your budget.  I guess most of the importers will do that.

Downside is the wait.  when I got the pics of mine from Ben Linney (linney.org) it seemed an eternity before the car eventually arrived but the wait has been worth it.

Hang in there and get the car that\'s exactly what you want - waiting a little longer will be worth it.

Cheers,

Iain

Sorry Iain,

Some confusion there mate, it was Matt that has sold his...

As far as I am aware Miguel still has the white one - I am getting the impression that it has been offered to  a few people.  Miguel really rates it, is it just the colour that is putting people off ?

Also, has anyone used arm imports in pembrokeshire ?  Have been speaking with a guy called Mike, he has one \'J\' plate in at the moment -\'Black and fairly standard - not really my thing\' - but the bloke next door who sells caravan has two highly modified examples he wants to sell.  Awaiting price, but received pictures yesterday.

Does anyone have space to host them for me, so you can see what it is like ?, or is there an on-line hosting do da ?

Thanks,

Tom

Oh yeah FD\'s must be the No.1 requested Japanese Import at the moment, they sell like hot cakes all of ours are deposited, and its hard work to come across good, clean, unabused examples..

Tomson, i hate to say it but you really missed out m8, the mazdaspeed kit is outragous, no photo\'s could do it justice.. There can not be too many GT-C kits in the UK, especailly in white.. Which i can\'t understand why is not so popular this side of the water.. It is the best colour:)

oops just saw your second post Tom..

So the choice is between a stunning late model FD with one of the most desireble kits to come out of Japan with orginal auction sheet or from the bloke next door who sells caravan has two highly modified examples he wants to sell...:p

Point taken mate..............

Although just because he sells caravans does not mean he has not loved each one of his cars, spent loads of money uprating them, done Alarms and underseals - rebuilt engines etc etc.., also it does not mean that he has :rollin

Need to make up my mind today !!

We only source RX-7\'s that I\'d buy myself, were I looking for one, so quality\'s always high. There\'s no substitute for knowledge of these cars, or being able to see the cars myself, before buying.

We don\'t use internet auctions to buy cars - we touch, smelll, feel, rev, etc. and have years of experience buying these. Was asked recently by another supplier in UK to source RX-7\'s for him - which I refused to do.... Only our cars are hand picked, so no dogs will come from us, just excellent examples  :)

RX-7\'s are pretty tunable cars - probably the most easily tunable of all Jap sports cars (No Cams, no pistons, no conrods, etc!).

3rd Gen. is agruably the most beautiful of all Japanese Sports Cars ever made. They turn more heads than a Ferrari and can be tuned to fry Ferrari\'s with less effort than you\'d think.

They can be very quick. Power isn\'t everything, balance and lightweight are important too.

RX-7\'s are junior supercars as standard and with a bit of tuning will just beat some pretty exotic stuff - forget Evo\'s Scoobies, etc. and the like, if standard, they\'re a bit slow in comparison.

Not idle claims. I think there are still some downloads of my 7 playing with tuned R32 GTR\'s and Evo 7\'s etc. in Tsukuba:

http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/foru...=&threadid=1272

I absolutely adore them - not bad considering I could drive any Japanese Sports car I like in my line of work...I always come back to the rex. Nothing else gives the same refinement, balance of handling, character and sheer ability to be very naughty when you want to - or to just cruise in traffic sit back & relax, listen to the hifi and forget it\'s a total rocket.

Fuel bills aren\'t low, but then again, what else can give you hours of a (Healthy) adrenalin rush / euphoria - without resorting to drugs.

The RX-7 can....

RX-7\'s are No. 1 for fun

Miguel.
