Had a 4 wheel laser alignment as the car seemed a bit skittish, this hasn\'t improved it. So i thought it was the bushes, now i have noticed the inside of the front and back tyres on the drivers side have got serious tyre wear in less that 1000 miles!
What could else do i need to do? It is pulling serious to the left and all wobbly coming off the gas.
Have you lowered the car?
Are the FD or FC\'s fitted with camber adjustable suspension (if not then the alighnment wouldn\'t be able to do this adjustment) If not and you have lowered the car then the incorrect camber will cause the ware issue.
Don\'t think its been lowered but it has blistein suspension. I am a bit scard to drive it as it feels like its going to throw me into the nearest lampost, also its costing me a small fortune in tyres.
camber, toe, aligment and tyre pressure are the biggest causes for tyre wear
Toe is covered in a laser alignment isn\'t it?
Not tyre related, but what state are the shocks in? Worn shocks can give some nasty movements on backing off.
sorry G-man just noticed you changed you Avitar its totally awsome :rollin :rollin :Thumbs-up :rollin :rollin :rollin
Its cool, just can\'t stop staring at it.
Just been looking through the FD alignment sticky and i have noticed 2 things;
1) When my car was laser aligned it probably would have been set up for 16inch alloys not 17\'s
2) Someone mentioned in the post about about the camber setting being a little over the top and causing inner tyres wear. If i was a betting man i would say my camber settings a) are wrong and b) different on either side causing my car to threatern to kill me at every bend.
Hi Graham, couple of things.
Hi Graham, couple of things.
When you had your Laser line done as you say they should have set it up for 17" and they should have later RX-7 specs in their computer for this geometry set up (1998on), having said that it shouldn\'t make much difference as the rolling radius of 16" and 17" tyres are the same due to the profile of the tyres.
With these cars both camber and toe adjustment can be made at the rear end and note that if toe out is employed at the back end its very dangerous and will cause the car to be unstable at speed and very oversteeery.
If its camber problems then the wear you suggest would mean that a wheel would be noticeably leaning in at the top.
If I were you I would take the car back explain what has happened and ask if they checked for any wear in the suspension joints before they adjusted anything because they should have done.
Hi Graham
As Clive says you should be able to see if the camber is off.
I adjusted my camber myself using a digital inclinometer, you just need to put the car on level ground and take your measurements off the top and bottom of each rim.
Remember if you adjust the camber that it will change your toe in.
Neil.
Ok possibly time for me to me beaten with the thick stick;
It was pointed out to me that the fact that i have four different makes of tyres (at least one crap one) could easily account for my handling issue. So i have been loaned a couple of new tyres to have a test to see if this solves anything. I will get these swapped and see if makes a differences.
It is normal practice to sort the basics first.....check mechanicals for wear,tyres are one size and similar wear,tyre pressures are equal,then only can you start with the settings.It can also be that you toe and camber are out on the one side.
For circuit racing we sometimes set up the car with more toe on the one side to aid in corner steering (applies to low top speed circuits),so camber would be equal on both sides but toe would be greater on one side.
The effect was that one side tyres would wear dramatically in a short space of time.i.e. one set of new slicks per heat (65 km in total).
For a road car to have this wear problem it is quite dramatic and the settings are dangerously wrong as the tyre compounds are significantly harder than slicks.
Are your Bilsteins adjustable..if so check that the ride height is equal and that the shock settings are equal for road usage.Weight transfer settings can also add to you problems.
Taken some pics of the driver side front tyre, the wear is actually on the inside.
Warn side
Another of the warn side.
Outside - no tyre wear.
This one shows the warn side on the right and normal wear on the left.
From the tyres it looks as if the camber is out but for that much wear as people have said i should be able to notice it.
