Post by: Rotorboy65 on January 19, 2006, 07:53:32 PM
Whoops looks like the RX8\'s are not liked by all people have a look at this http://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=353079  Cant please everyone all of the time, not sure what they are saying about oil consumption. Don\'t think the Rotary\'s drink that much. Now shall we start a bun fight or let them stew in their ignorance  :yes . What you think people.....cheers Leigh.

DOn;t think they\'re being any harsher about th e8 than we would about their hairdresser cars though... ;)

They seem to quite like the 7 though :)

Most people will always see the RX7 as a good looking thursty unrealiable car, which is a shame, as its not something you realise thats isn\'t nessessarily true until you have owned one...... it would be a shame to see the RX8 get tared with the same brush....I\'m mean yes they do use oil faster than some other cars but not so much so that you need complain about it.... My 450 bhp impreza i used to own needed oil more often that my RX7

RX8\'s do use alot more oil than the FD RX7.
I hate to say it,but it is true,in many respects they are right on the thread.
If you are prepared to put up the the RX8\'s foibles then it is a good car.
It really does need a bit more torque lower down the rev range though,if it did then it would be a great car!

Carl

Should have turbo charged it... sorts out most problems with the power!

Often when folk are jealous of something, they just bitch for the sake of it..............
4 seats - 2 seats. Rotary - Vtech. Best handling - not best handling.

Nice to know the RX8 bothers them soooooooo much.

They are DIFFERENT. Doh ;-).

My controvesial thoughts on my RX-8...

My RX-8 uses a LOT of oil (actually a little too much) - we are doing oil consumption tests on it at the moment.  It is using almost 2 litres per 1000kms which is twice as much as it should be.  It has just over 44,000kms on it.

My E60 M5 uses a lot of oil also, the Porsche Cayenne twin turbo uses a stack of oil - so it isn\'t just the rotary as mentioned above.

Gotta say the main thing that annoys me about the RX-8 (my auto) is its lack of power vs the amount of fuel it uses.

Still love the car, handles and stops amazingly - but already it is showing signs of wear and tear.  Been through a set of brakes already from one track day, second set of brakes are wobbling now also (through the peddle).  It has been recalled back to Mazda a few times for various things.  It has had around 5 ECU fuel map upgrades, torque converter has been replaced, engine mounts have been replaced 3 times, and it is still awaiting another set of new/redesigned engine mounts (as the vibrations are quite bad on idle etc.).

Mazda could have done better I think, it is meant to be the pride of the fleet - so you do have to question why some of these things have occured.

(I should be pro Mazda here shouldn\'t I! - but I do think that the RX-8 could have been better in many ways).

Hi Glen. No controversy in there ^, just fact. My first 8 had several recall/replacement parts and I\'ve no doubt that my present 8 will have some problems, as I\'ve already got rust on the chrome wheel nuts. Good job the warranty is so good.

It\'s not as though Mr Honda gets it right first time, every time and I\'ve no idea how long the s2000 has been around (or am I that bothered) so it should be better in many ways. Where is THE perfect car.  Surely it\'s not the s2000?

In my experience when driving my 8 it seems that most other car drivers are out to prove that their car is faster - and, in most cases their car\'s are! Yep, I\'m an 8 owner who acknowledges the shortfall of power on the road. On the back roads I\'m not so certain of the amount of confidence other drivers experience from their \'faster\' cars as they always seem to be straight line merchants (any other 8 owners experienced this?).

Like I\'ve said already, if it bothers some s2000 owners enough (as it obviously does) that\'s their problem. I did note however that a couple of guys spoke favourably of the 8, so it is just the sad, jealous types bleating after all. Personally I don\'t have a prob with s2000\'s, they are supposed to be a good TWO seater sports car.

Perhaps it\'s just some of the owners...........? :-).

I agree with Glenn, as he says the amount of power for the amount of money it costs to run it isnt fantastic. For example for similar money a DC5 Honda Integra type R will give up to 40mpg on a run and 20-30mpg when you are thrashing it, beats the sh1t out of the 8 for torque and probably in the real world power too, it will probably not need rebuilding for 200,000 miles and is one of the best track cars I have driven. Saying that, the RX8 looks beautiful, has a lovely feeling gearbox, great brakes and handling. IMHO the car should had forced induction from the start as the FD\'s fuel consumption seems little different from the 8\'s but the FD has a lot more torque.

I disagree about the DC5, the DC2 Honda is more of a Trackcar than the DC5 is plus it sounds like you are in a race car when driving because its stripped out !!!

Love them, They do hold their value well in Japan, if I was gonna have a trackday car it would probably be a DC2 Integra, fairly quick but handles like its on rails !!

Anyway, its nice to know that they do like the RX7 though. I thought the S2000 was a fabulous car when it came out but its become a bit like the Audi TT - a bit stale and bland now. Look at the 350z Roadster, a much nicer convertible. They havent done anything to the S2k ever since it came out, no body bits, shame they didnt make a Type R version....missed opportunity if you ask me !!

I still like that camou MX5 with Rotary Engine on the Tokyo Auto Salon thread....my idea of fun !!!

I have owned both, the DC2 makes a better sound, but thats its only + point over the DC5. The torque is so much better from the DC5 and the stability is far better. I love the DC2 though, awesome motor. btw the DC5 is also stripped out with lightweight glass etc.

Not only that, but you cannot buy a DC2 anymore and I was comparing more like for like with the RX8.

Oh and trust me a DC2 aint stripped out like a race car, it still has some sound deadening, my FD has none and the sound in car is unbearably more. ;)

Lol mate about your car.

Went and looked at a DC5 as our local Honda dealer are selling import ones, at first I thought they looked amazing, especially when seeing them against Civic Type Rs but whilst I was looking I was watching people come out from the garage and stopping and staring at my RX7. It make me feel smug and realise I had a better car and how bland the DC5 is compared with my 12 year old FD. Went back to it with a hoooge smile on my face lol.

Best thing though about the Hondas is the engine is almost bulletproof, there is an awesome EK Civic Type R in this months J-Tuner, like those a lot better than the later model. Although the new Civic Type R looks pretty good.

He He, nice too see some constructive replies to this post and very mature outlook by everyone. It\'s no secret that my wife has an S2000, so we often look on S2K site (and she\'s a paid up member). I have seen lot\'s of post\'s regards the RX8 and felt they often gave it a hard time.

So thought it was about time we could share judement\'s on both cars. Like I said felt Mazdarotary member\'s have given a more honest and non-biased reaction. My wife is giving me grief in the ear for this  :rollin , coz she think\'s I don\'t like her car. Point of fact I  think apart from the Rx it\'s gotta be the best handling car I have had the experience of driving. It\'s steering is spot on the brakes are magic, seem\'s to stop faster than mine, and it\'s pretty damn quick for a natuarlly aspirated 2 litre.

My verdict is both car\'s have plus and minus point\'s, but the thing they both have in common are their Japanese and well put together and thats wot I luv about them :InLove. Cheers Leigh.

Wow...  I kinda viewed the S2K and the RX8 as along the same theme...  I came very close to buying the S2000, but I wasn\'t too keen on a convertable... I\'m single, so the rear seats aren\'t a big deal... but then they are handy somtimes... The cars look very similar too!

As for the car, well... it\'s very tame at low revs... and it\'s not exactly a rocketship... but it isn\'t slow either, and is really nice to drive... puts a smile on my face anyway.

I\'ll have it for a long time...

Not sure where this oil business comes from... I think the longest I went between checking was 1500 miles,  I like to keep it topped up, but mine will usually make 2000 miles before it reaches the minimum marker...

I wonder what the actual reliability of the engine is compared to the S2000?... Fuel consumption isn\'t great, but it does get more competitive with other cars the more enthusiastically you drive... I was out with a friend in a BMW 325 coupe, and on the motorway, his consumption was way better than mine, but we got of onto a few country lanes, and he was working really hard to keep up, and almost evened out the consumption for the whole trip... since I was barely cruising...  Like zevans said... any corner, any speed... hahah.

And finally... who would mis the chance to be a member of MRC by having a Honda?

i dont think the s2000 and rx8 are in the same class. 4 seater coupe vs 2 seater  convertible sports car. The mx5 is a closer comparisson to the s2k imo

My point exactly  :Thumbs-up . Like I\'d said, s2000 a good TWO seater sports car. I\'m not going to slate the s2000, I respect the fact that they are quick, handle and brake well. No doubt they get better mpg (its almost a case of what doesn\'t), as for oil useage, like James has said already, I don\'t find 1000+ miles between top ups that bad, but I\'d prefer better.

Leigh, I\'m glad you posted this thread and thanks for your comments re. us MRC folk giving more honest/non biased views  :D .

The 8 is a great car in lots of ways, it\'s also not so great in some respects and the obvious option is freedom of choice. S2000 or new MX5? Same difference perhaps imho. S2000 or RX8, total difference imho. RX8 or RX7, obvious similarities but almost total difference imho. S2000 or RX7, obvious difference but not quite total difference imho. Perhaps thats why s2000 owners may think better of the 7? Trouble is for them if thats the case, won\'t an RX7 make an s2000 look, err, slow?

What about 190, 5 speed v 228 6 speed RX8\'s? What are the REAL world differences? Now thats a fair comparison, imho  ;) .

It\'s not all bad news regards RX8 v S2000, they hate the Porsche Boxster even more. Think they see it as the most near comparison to the S. Anyway we all know Rotarys rule ok :Thumbs-up .....cheers Leigh.

I\'ve heard those types of comments time and again from various forums, various people i know and various reviews. And yet dispite it all I still bought the RX8. My only moan regarding the 8 is the MPG. But even then right now its something i can live live. IMO you buy a car for what u want it for. But u love a car for something u cant describe, rationality need not apply.

I\'ve seen a few races where the s2k is against the 8 and the 8 has always been beaten. For that matter the 8 gets beaten by almost every car it goes against in the BMI races. I honestly wish the 8 was a better car in the power dept, but as has been said, getting a turbo usually sorts that out.

On the whole out of the box experiance described in the 1st few posts on this thread. I\'m guessing they were pre 2003 cars. Mine is a post 2003 RX8 & to date the most serious fault, discounting the dodgy stock tranny & diff oil, is the rear cluster having condensation. I have driven it hard down some back roads so it\'s not exactly been used as a granny mobile. Plus its a daily driver. So all in all i\'d say the 8 is a very reliable car. Sure it has a few lil teething problems, but i dont really recall any car that didn\'t.

LOL i dont really know where i\'m headed in my post but I got my 8 knowing its short falls and knowing its not the fastest out the box or most economical but still i like it. So others can say what ever they want, really dont bother me in the least. :driving

being as we have a few 8 owners in the thread, does anybody know what this model Rx-8 is all about? The back lights are totally different and so are the front. It would have been superb if mazda fitted those massive brakes :evillaugh

1. Maybe the S2000\'s acceleration is better, but it does not mean that it\'s the faster car. 0-60 is not the only thing which is matter! What about the racetrack? If I well know the RX-8 has the same time as S2000, BMW M3, and Z350.
2. I have 10312 miles in my car ( Hi-Power) and i did not have any problem. NO rust, NO flooding, NO too much oil and fuel consumption. I had a V6 MX-3, and it had bigger oil consumption.

So Mazda RX-8, YES!!!  :yes

I have also driven an S2000 a fair bit. In the dry one of the best cars I have ever driven, in the wet without a doubt the worst car I have ever driven. Roof down, you will be changing down to hear that sound, and anyone that owns one FFS take the top off the air intake box it improves the sound 10 times over. I hear the 2004 on model is improved but that torque sensing rear diff.... ...it dont work in the wet and with the roof up its well boomy in that claustrophobic cabin.

Its no secret I love the FD but to be fair it IS an expensive car to run. Thats why if I didnt have a garage I could use to fix it I would have a DC2 ITR or Accord type R because they are well balanced cars, great on track and cheap as hell to run.

Interesting read this thread,

I think if you are worried about fuel consumption then get a Ford KA or something as we all knew about the MPG before buying so why complain now ?

Every forum you visit will think their cars are the best thing since the last car they owned we are no different on MRC or FDUK, i like the rx7 because they are so raw and a proper drivers car, cant say its the best car ever as i haven\'t driven every car out there  :Nono!

Have also driven the new RX8 and have to say in all honesty as a car they are very exceptional and i would deffo buy one as a family car, but the low down power is poor no real form until after 5000rpm, the handling is sublime though and the comfort is amazing as well as the drivers position being almost spot on too. I also sat in the back and even for me there was loads of room.

In its competitve market the RX8 is probably the best car as its the cheapest and the same speed as the rest.

I wouldn\'t get too annoyed at other forum comments as i said we all think our cars are the best so only natural you get some bitching here and there peeps  :spank

The s2000 owner\'s and who ever else can bitch as much as they like, I think it\'s just great that the 8 bothers some of them enough to bitch about it  :Giggle .

To top it off, I did my Prodrive today with other owners, and the way that the instructors show you just how good the 8 is, and subsequently you do that your self...... I don\'t give a rats what anyone thinks, faults and all. Oh yeh, AND with a rear passenger too - s2000  :p  :rollin

This car is flippin amazing  :cool  :god  :)  :) .

May I remind you all for the 50,000th time that the peak torque figure is not the whole story, and more torque does not equal lower lap times, or indeed lower times point-to-point on B-roads, or indeed even 1/4 mile times to some extent.

Glen - the part I don\'t understand is why Mazda brought out the auto - because it must dilute the perception of the car as a whole. I\'m sure that\'s a lot of the reason the car has an even worse perception in the States. An NA rotary is just never going to work properly with a 4-speed slush box no matter how much you try and fix the inherent shortcomings with cunning engineering. The main issue even with the lo-power manwell is the 5-speed ratios - driving with only 4 and a TC must be appalling!

One of the best comparisons between the RX-8 and S2000 is the Best Motoring \'Rotary Reborn\' DVD,there\'s handling course tests plus a circuit shoot out between the two,the DC5 Integra\'s in there too, check it out, makes for some interesting viewing..... :)

^ I\'ve got that dvd and it is pretty good. It did make me wonder why Mazda didn\'t manage to give the 8 more horses but the handling and brake\'s go a long way to make up for that, if not the whole way - and four seats of course. Best Coupe last two years, perhaps a third?  :cool . I\'m told suspension tweaks are the way to go? ;) .

Yup the video is cool, during the debrief the racers discuss the RX-8\'s performance and comment the engine lacks low and midrange torque to give it more punch out of corners which will in turn translate into better speed down the straights. As they say though Mazda did\'nt design the RX-8 as focused track car but a competent all rounder that seats 4!
