Title: Brakes problem
Post by: davegttph1 on January 16, 2006, 02:41:42 PM
OK guys, car has been off the road since mid December, it ran out of MOT and Ive stored it away for a while knowing I wouldnt need it for 3 weeks or so. Ive had it running once or twice over the period making sure its OK etc but now I came to use it this afternoon and the rear brake calipers are sizied, to the point that after a 10 minute drive (mainly though traffic so hardly moving, in fact just 3miles) one of the brake discs are so hot theyre smoking and it smells. The disc now looks shot to be fair and might need replacing. So first question is where can I source some rear brake discs and pads and how damaging on the wallet is it going to be?

Secondly how can I unsieze the caliper? Otherwise its just going to eat a new set of discs and we dont want that :(

Cheers guys :)

it probably wants an overhaul or replacing with a good 2nd hand one, mazda do a o/haul kit I believe.
Various brake sets see here.

Hi Dave,

Try removing the offending calliper, giving it a good spray then wind the piston in and out as though you are adjusting to fit new pads.

These callipers are £200 each so the above is def worth a try.

Hope this helps.

I did my pads at the weekend, you\'ll need a tool to wind the piston back in, assuming it\'s the same as my rear caliper.

The tools about 20 quid from halfords with the right gizmo to wind the piston in and out. I got my discs and pads from this company. They do refurbished units too :

http://www.speedways.co.uk/calipers/list/mazda/16.htm

Rear calipers are 111 plus vat each for recons.

Rear discs arn\'t cheap :(

I\'ve used long nosed pliers before on mine instead of buying a tool.  Work absoluetly fine..  Give it a go

Cheers

I changed all the seals on my rear callipers recently and got the bits from here http://www.brakeparts.co.uk/   £20 for the seals or 75 quid for a calliper.

Hi guys. Well, been and bought the tool, piston wound out easily when I put the handbrake on but wouldnt retract when it came off, wound it all the way back in and its pretty tight still, wheel does turn but there is some binding on there, Im gonna see if a garage can overhaul it for me. See what they say when it goes for its MOT this week.

Thanks for the help :)

p.s. might be needing that caliper dandan ;)

If your wanting some 2nd hand discs & pads for the rear Im selling mine as I have just upgraded them. If you are wanting new discs/ pads tehn I got mine from Gary and are very impressed with them. Makes a huge difference.
