Title: Injectors in the inlet plenum
Post by: gmogle on January 13, 2006, 11:55:23 PM
Chaps,

Just fitted my uprated Greddy SMIC and noticed I am hitting high injector duties.

Not serious into the tuning bug, have in addition to the above an uprated exhaust, decat, dump valve and unmapped Power FC on the car at the mo.

Want to go for downpipe and water injection but thats it as far as mods go.

Therefore been quoted a number of different prices for different types of work.

The quote I am most interested in involves fitting injectors in the elbow or inlet plenum that piggyback of the Power FC. Is this a good method ? Has anyone had any experience with it ?

Is this the best way or should I go the uprated primaries with modded fuel rail and remap option instead ?

Any advice would be good but please note that I am not made of money and want to do this the most economically way possible based on the only other 2 mods I want to do. The car is used as a weekend toy and not a drag car etc but with maybe 1 trackday a year.

Cheers,
Gareth

thats a route i will be taking 2 additional injectors in the plenum or elbow. I\'v been told a number of times its not really nessessary as you can just go for bigger secondarys and they do the job nicely and of course its alsojust something else to go wrong. (which i have to say is my opinion on the EDFC used on some of Teins suspensions kits but anyway)

However i have been looking more and more at the way the japanese tune RX7\'s and most high powered ones in japan, at least the majority i have found, have 6 injectors. For this i feel there must be a reason. I mean i\'m not just talking about people in japan doing this i\'m talking about RE Amamiya, Scoot, Knight sports....... These guys are the guru\'s of RX7 tuning in there respective feilds, UK Tuners please take no offense as i more than sure most of you guys know what your talking about too

My take on this is that with an additional injector controller as well as a PFC you can map the fueling much more intermatly as with the additional injector you are mixing the air and fuel before its ignited not as its being ignited so you get a much better or cleaner explosion thus reducing risk of dangerous detonation

This is just my take on it i\'m sure other people have their veiws too

Reason why Japanese tuners in general use 6 injectors is 80% because they don\'t use standalone ecu so they cannot upgrade the primary or secodnaries due to having a chipped ecu rather than a standalone. The other 20% is because they are running big power and they don\'t use big 1680 bosch injectors like other parts of the world they use 850cc injector for bother primary and secondaries, this obviously will support about 380rwhp before maxing out so they add two additional injectors in the plenum.
Which is ok but no where near as ideal as upgraded primaries and or secondaries.
Some of these Japanese companies of renown do what I think is real stupid things like soop up a car from head to toe and run it on stock injectors an a stock ecu with a chip??

Haha...:rollin

Thats exactly how my car came over !!

Streetport, TO4S, FMIC, LSD, Twin Plate, etc etc. With stock injectors and a remapped ECU  :Hammer  :Hammer

Now has an Apexi PFC fitted and mapped by reworx, but I\'m happy with 335rwhp at 0.85Bar for now :chat

I\'m hoping it\'ll last a bit longer in this state than it would with 400 or so at the wheels.... Once it\'s needing a rebuild, I\'ll probably upgrade to 1600\'s secondary kit.

I\'m in the same boat. I see 97% plus and I\'m boosting to 1.1 bar. Its going to fail pretty soon as it must be very close to detonation at this point. I need a boost controller and bigger injectors.
Does anyone know the injector flow rates that can be achieved by raising the rail pressures? Is it linear? Can you rig the APEXI ecu by changing the injector data to suit?
WGT have offered a 1600cc injector kit but failed to mention it means removing the air pump which will not help come MOT time.
I like the idea of a secondary rail and piggybacking injectors.
Can Anyone reccomend a boost controller? The Apexi unit seems sensible and will interface with the ecu I believe.
I will be spending the money this week so need advice. The car is capable of 400bhp. Its the injectors that are the weakest link at the moment.

Ollie you tart,

Who are you referring to ?

Not gonna do the inlet plenum thing anymore, going for 850 primaries, boost controller and obviously the mapping.

Oh and ordered my water injection kit today hurrah

Best to get the ECU mapped, the injector duty may fall.

I thought the reason for having aditional injectors was the trasition was smother instead of running stick front and 1300s rear.

But I\'m usually wrong.

Yeah, not aiming for the power like someone else we know.

Just making it a bit more reliable and more fun to see off my Skyline mate lol

Looking forward to seeing the FB mate, your Dad told me it was progressing slowly.

Gareth,

With the mods you currently have I was maxing the standard injectors out.
I went for 1200 secondaries with larger fuel pump and all has been good since. Like you I\'m getting WI soon. After that its just body mods.

Rich. Where did you get your 1200cc secondaries from?
ARe they the modified 850\'s?
I have heard these can fail and cause detonation.
Can you retain the air pump with these injectors.

Cheers

Jon

Jon - They were 2nd hand from Pip @ WGT.
Yes I\'ve still got the air pump.
ARe they the modified 850\'s? Not sure.
I have heard these can fail and cause detonation.   I heard someone else mention this to me the other day. I\'ve had mine in for nearly a year w/o probs. I\'d hope Pip wouldn\'t fit these if he thought they may cause problems. Like I say a year on and alls good (touch wood).

Rich cheers for the comment, I am going for 850 primaries, fitting a decat, water inj, upping the boost a bit so hoping to be making over 300bhp.

Ollie, dont tell me you have the datalogging software too ?!!!? I hear yours is a bit of a handful in the wet !!!!!
