Hi,
My car is at about the estimated mileage that they are due a rebuild and is a fairly stock type R,
I started the car from my remote start left it for 2 mins, the drove off, after about a mile I I looked at the oil temp gauge and it was reading 100deg c it almost never goes that high and never that quickly so I copntinued with my journey. the car the started stuttering, it and the oil temp rises to apprx 140, all this time the water temp stays fine. The stuttering is fairly minimal to start, I then decide to turn back so atleast the car is at my house on the drive way, I had to stop twice to let the oil temp drop to something that I was comfortable with, During this journey back the stuttering gets worse so I had to limp the car back at 20 miles an hour.
It only stutters when your using throttle, it idle\'s fine and when in neutral or with the clutch depressed it rev\'s fine.
I have a feeling it could be rotor tip or corner seal what does anyone recon.
Any help would be appreciated.
Alan
check the hose has not come off the map sensor?
Check the minor things first before you start thinking about the worse case,
As mentioned check the map sensor and all hoses to make sure its nothing simple, if you are at a loss get the rx to a specialist for the once over to put you at ease. :)
Where abouts is the MAP sensor? Is it the one behings theTB, if it is it seem\'d to be attached.
Its on the firewall just above the throttle body, towards the left hand side of the car. There should be one little black pipe that connects it to the throttle body.
Is that the one that has a small pipe running to a box which says "mazda boost sensor" and has an electrical connector goign to it, if so then thats all connected.
Also what could cause the oil temp to go that high but die of very quickly as soon as the engine is stopped?
What is your actual oil level like?
ps. yes to your question.
May have a blockage, dont know if a flush would clear it.
I\'ll have a look at the level, its done about 2000 since the last oil change, I can understand blockage somewhere in the oil system would cause the overheating but why would it cause the car to stutter?
Al
If there was a blockage big enough to raise the temp your oil pressure should have been at a raised level [so check that]. You can try a basic flush with 5L of Oil, GTX will set you back 13.99 or so, try Asda and you may get a free \'top up bottle\'. 4L should be enough to fill it, so keep the sump plug out while you over fill with 5L and watch and see if it runs clear (doubt it), use the top up bottle to level it back up after replacing the plug. If you\'ve got a stock ecu then resetting it may also help, not that that would explain your oil temp. Doubt an OMP failure would lead to high oil temps but it would trip the ecu into limping home btw.
The oil pressure gauge was reading normally, if the ecu ended up in limp mode what would it feel like.
Can anyone recomend what the first things to start looking at would be?
Also how do I reset the ecu?
A
I think the way to reset the ECU is to disconnect the battery put your foot on the brake for 30 seconds, re-connect battery
Good luck
Bob
Ok I\'lll give that a go first, if that doesn\'t seem to help what would be the next thing to look at, as I have limited light to work with when I finish work today.
Check the metering oil pump as this would put you in limp mode.
I\'ll be in Farnham on Saturday if you haven\'t fixed it by then. Drop me an email.
I will get started today but I may end up needing your help, what you doing up in this neck of the woods then?
I put a reply on FDUK, but if anyone else is interested, allstaruk has been reading coolant temps off the standard temp gauge, which is pretty much useless - this doesn\'t move past \'Normal\' until it reaches 120 degrees C, which is when the coolant is boiling (At the pressure of 1.9 which is what the coolant is pressurized to).
so, not oil temp then?
Well, I\'m guessing that he has an oil temp gauge that is wired up, and this is reading 140 C. But the temp gauge for the coolant is the stadard FD gauge. Also, the primary, and initial way in which an engine is cooled, is via the oil, as opposed to the coolant. It\'s just that most of the temperature is removed from the oil via the coolant.
Visiting the missus at Surrey Institute of Art and Design. mmmmmmmmm students mmmmmmmm. Will head across a few hours early if you want me to have a look at it.
Ah many hours have been spent in there student union, I will see how I get on in the next day or two but if I don\'t get anywhere it would be great if you could.
Thanks
Alan
Ok this might be a dumb question, but...
Which gauge do you see this high oil temp on? Our cars dont have an oil temp gauge. The oil gauge is a PRESSURE gauge.
So, does your car have an aftermarket oil temp gauge fitted?
It certainly does I have a blitz oil temp gauge plumbed into a greddy sandwich plate below the oil filter.
