Title: Old School engines ?
Post by: MikeLMR on January 13, 2006, 11:28:01 PM
we\'re all pretty familiar with the rotary engines available in oldschool motors BUT what piston engines are there available and what are the designations etc. ?

Perhaps we could then put together a reference thread with all the info in (rotary too) ??

Listed below are the engines fitted to 1000/1300 saloons and estates, 818 saloon, coupe and estate, and also the 323 hatch and estate up to 1986. Designations in \'##\'

1000cc \'PC\'
Actual capacity........................... 985 cc
Bore x Stroke.............................. 70mm x 64mm
Compression ratio......................... 8.8:1
Power (SAE)................................ 45 BHP @ 5500rpm

1300 \'TC\'
Actual capacity........................... 1275 cc
Bore x Stroke.............................. 73mm x 76mm
Compression Ratio........................ 8.8:1  (early 1300- STB)
Compression Ratio........................ 9.2:1  (late 1300 - FA3, 818 and 323)
Power (SAE)................................ 78 BHP @ 6000rpm (early 1300- STB)
Power (SAE)................................ 81 BHP @ 6100rpm (late 1300 - FA3, 818 and 323)

1400 \'UC\'  Fitted to 323 Auto and estate

Actual capacity........................... 1490 cc
Bore x Stroke.............................. 77mm x 80mm
Compression ratio......................... 9.0:1
Power (DIN?)................................73 BHP @ 5700rpm

All these are indestinguishable from the exterior, apart from the engine designation cast into the block. Makes for easy cheating when it comes to class capacity rules :bandit . Not that I\'ve done anything like that you understand. cough, cough.... And besides it was a long time ago and only 100cc over

And last but not least from the smaller cars this beauty. All the above are OHC but this ones OHV, and was available as saloon, coupe and estate.  A real revver as I remember :cool

1200 Cant remember designation sorry
Actual capacity........................... 1169 cc
Bore x Stroke.............................. 70mm x 76mm
Compression ratio......................... 8.6:1
Power (SAE)................................73 BHP @ 6000rpm

I think I\'ve got some info on the 616/B1600 motor - if I can find it I\'ll post it up.

Cheers,
Rich

Ok Mike, theres good news and bad news
Yep thats an OHV  :yes  but its not a Mazda one :(

I\'m pretty sure its a D@£$un - the covers on the master cyl are a bit of a giveaway.

The big difference is that the Mazda 1200 is a crossflow, and also it has a forward hingeing bonnet, the battery\'s on the wrong side and so on.

I would have posted pics with the specs but would you believe my scanners gone T%ts up :Grrr Hopefully get time to buy a new one tomorrow and post up the relevant pics.

Cheers,
Rich :Thumbs-up

and the OHV engines are REALLY difficult to find photos of even looking on the aussie sites there are lots of photos of 1000\'s 1200\'s etc. but no standard engine shots (plenty of TC\'s !)

A couple of dates relating to the 323:

October 1978 - 323 SP introduced wih 1400 motor and 5 speed box, and also the estate with 1400 motor but only 4 speed box.

March 1980 - \'Facelift\' models introduced - the square headlamp ones.

February 1981 - All rear wheel drive 323\'s discontinued, apart from 1400 estate.

July 1982 - 1500 estate, with 5 speed box, introduced with another \'facelift\'

April 1986 - 1500 estate discontinued with the launch of the front wheel drive estate.
