Title: Can you put a single turbo on a stock port engine?
Post by: dandan on January 10, 2006, 02:25:00 PM
Hi all,
Yes or no answer will do it, a guy is interested in my engine and it\'s going into a single\'d car, he thinks it will need to be ported to run with a single turbo, i\'m not so sure.
So, can he happily and safely buy my engine with it\'s distinct lack of aftermarket porting?
:):)

ooh, and if the engine is already out, roughly how much does it cost for, say, a mild street port?

Howdy mate. Im with you on this one i think you can run a single on a standard engine but i guess it all comes down to how big it is! Obviously it will be mucho better if it was ported. I reackon tho i big turbo would struggle without porting to really come to life.. As for the cost i think its in the region of £300 to £500 ish from mild to wild. hope this helps. :WaveBye

Yes you can run a single turbo on an unported engine.
The porting would mean a rebuild as the engine has to come apart.
Regards
Carl

A medium  sized turbo like the GT35R or T04E will run quite happly on stock ports, big turbos like mine need big exhaust ports to spool up quickly and effectively

I have had a couple of big turbo cars with stock ports, they work really well. With my car the big ports give it much more mid range, to high rev range power but at the expense of a bit of low end drivability and tons of unburnt fuel out of the exhaust. Still you really feel the difference when you get up the rev range, a car with smaller ports feels strangled in comparison.

Sounds like you need more tuning Ant

nope, thats just a bridge port for you, but I didnt want some girly \'street port\' but a full on race job and thats what I got. :D

Well you should be not seeing that much unburnt fuel on a bridgeport like you are describing IMO but I could be wrong.

Well at least Reworx got a 9 sec 1/4 on a "Girly" street port lol.
Also the K&N RX8 over in the states reverted back from Bridgeport to Street Port and got more power and faster times.

So I think I will stick to my Girly Reworx Vintage street port and you can stick to your Tim special bridge port lol

See you at "ten of the Best" im going for the fastest RX7 quarter mile time, Im sure you will be up to the challenge eh Ant?

I am no drag queen guys, I have told you all that so many times but never you listen. My car has long gearing and track suspension, its no good for 1/4 miles, but if you insist on wasting a fantastic handling car on 10-15 secs worth of d1ck wagging then fair play to you - go right ahead. If we are in TOTB I believe the FDUK are entering Phil for handling, Geff for 1/4 mile and me for top speed... ..but there you go.

Yes Geff knows he has a girly street port :D I told him before he just needs to go a step further to make his car truly silly and unroadworthy ;)  like mine :D I mean fancy having a car that idles properly and doesnt chuck out unburnt petrol like a petrol pump, thats just not right :D
