An interesting question here!
Where do most of you see the FD value wise. As we know more and more are dieing through one reason or another.
If you have a very nice one, whats the speculation of it\'s value in say 10 years from now. Is the future good for these cars or are they going to go the way of so many others, long gone and lost? in short is the future good or bad?
Just an interesting idea! :wiggle
Depends how many keep coming over from japan and what these prices are going to do as this will have a direct effect on the prices of the cars already over here.
Take a look at the FC & FB prices for an indication of where I think things are going ;)
Why would the FD be any different?
I\'d say they\'re going down in price for now.... and for the forseeable future. It\'s not a classic Ferrari or DeTomaso unfortunately.
Quote from: monkey-fd3sI\'d say they\'re going down in price for now.... and for the forseeable future. It\'s not a classic Ferrari or DeTomaso unfortunately.
Correct, but every winter they drop like flies, through damage and there are only so many FD\'s made!!! having said that the didn\'t stop production until (was it 2002?) so you looking 4 years ago, so they are going to keep dropping for a while, but I cant see why their not going to go up in value in the future, they are a fairly rare car and they do look very nice! also you have to look at the demand for them, if people want it then they\'ll be prepared to pay for it!! but that is looking a fair way down the road unfortunatly!!!
Just look at the Aston Martin DB range: when they came out people didn\'t think much of them, I know one guy who partexed his DB5 for one of the first 3.0L Capris when they were released!! not only that 50% were ritten off because of their value (people just didn\'t care). now you try finding any DB Aston (not just the DB5) for less than £60,000 it\'s going to be well batterd!!!
So in my opinion Keep \'em clean & tidy then they should go up in value!!
Thats my thoughts

Yes it\'s a great car, prices might stabilise but if you think it\'s going to retain or increase in value anytime soon your dreaming... Just buy a classic ferrari it\'s a safer bet.
FD\'s are for drivers not speculators :3gears-rh
I see mine as an expensive hobby. Not as and investment and not really as a mode of transport. Going somewhere in it\'s an event not just a journey.
While it\'d be lovely if it were worth the 10k I paid for it (forgetting the best part of 10k spent since then). At best, if I tidied up the paintwork, it\'d be worth 7-8k . Maybe 8-9k when it\'s gone single turbo but maybe not.
I\'m planning on driving it until it\'s gone and extracting every bit of value I can until then.
Yes but the DB5 is also a 60s car, compre like with like (age-wise) A good 240z is now worth a fair bit however anything from \'79 onwards has still got a way to fall in value before it hits classic status. Some cars (Ferraris - for some reason, etc) are instant classics but others take a while to hit that status. I suspect FDs will hit classic status at that rate by about 2025!
Quote from: sadgothI suspect FDs will hit classic status at that rate by about 2025!
Very true..... and they\'ll be a lot less of them by then because most of them will have been stuffed or rusted away into nothing....
I have no idea what mines worth.... the paints cack but that\'s last on the list as I\'ve been slowly getting the rest of the stuff done. In the last year it\'s changed a lot from the stock car i bought and i\'ve spent way more than I\'ll ever get for it. IMHO it\'s still a way from being finished and I\'d need about another 10K to get in right. I really do wonder what it\'s worth.
Oi, Monkey "FAMILIA", - - - n*o*t familiar.
By the way, if you found a familia rotary (R100), I bet THAT would cost you a fortune now !
:-)
these cars dont sell quickly on the marketplace and as such people drop their price because they want a sale so eventually u reach a price thet they will sell fairly quickly at this is the price they will stabilize at..they are never going to increase in value they will end up sitting around the 5-8k mark with my guess 8k being for a very good car..i have spent about 8k on mine allready so too much of a loss to sell so will keep it until it falls to bits..they shld be looked at as a toy really they will never be a classic..sorry if that bursts a few bubbles

Sorry my bad on the spelling :P
Also with the rx8 being released and their prices evry slowly dropping maybe some people are going to be tempted to go for one of those instead?
Even in places like oz the fd is slowly dropping in price. It was totally unheard of 5 years ago to get one for less than $35,000. Now you can get a rough one or one with a dead moto for low 20\'s. My uneducated guess would be that average ones here will hover around the £3-£4k mark whilst modded ones with nice paint etc will always be up in the £6k and more region, mainly becaus eit might be a slightly different market.i.e. people wanting a faster one etc.
cheers, michael.
There aren\'t many nice RX-7\'s available in Japan (There never were, really - really nice ones are rare) the truly good ones will continue to hold their value in Japan as they have done since production stopped in Aug 2002.
The ones that are cheap are so for good reasons such as higher mileage, wear, etc.
There\'s still a fair supply of cheap \'n nasty RX-7\'s coming to the UK, appearing in trade import auctions and then being sold retail to unsuspecting punters. Saw another exporter trying to get a 116,000km RX-7 started today, whose engine was almost expired....someone will end up with that one, no doubt... :(
Until people realise it\'s false economy to buy a tired one and fix it up, there will be cheap ones changing hands fairly often I think.

The thing is when manufacturers make unique cars like ours with the rotary units, people tend to forget about the naff stuff that whent befor it!!!
eg.= Nissan/Datsun period- the old box sunny naff as you like, styling was non existant apart from the Z\'d cas... all of a sudden you have Sunny GTiR\'s, Skylines, 300 ZX, etc.
Aston Martin with their doged Lagonda (Looked like a big TR7), & their early V8 cars brokedown on a regular basis.... people forget the naff cars.
Reliant- this is a good one= known for the 3 wheeler, but the Scimitar Could have been made by a different manufacturer as there was no brand link
Classic Ferrari\'s, break down, slow, heavy on petrol etc. dont rate the 70\'s - 90\'s cars most of them look like dairily slices!!!
Basicaly if its different and looks sweet then prices should increase fingers crossed for all of us!!!

What exactly are you refering to? :flamed
I remember chatting to a respected prestige car dealer specialising in Porsche 911\'s and NSX\'s etc about 10 years ago and I said I\'d really like a late model RX-7 and he said...."you like your rare exotic cars don\'t you......" and quoted me 20K+ to import a really nice one!!
My,how times have changed!!!!!!

I thought someone would pick up in that.... CR@P
I ment the usual run of the mill shopping cars & family cars, like the old boxy 323 and 626 range that isn\'t that desiarable!!
WELL EXCUSE ME - WHAT\'s WRONG WITH A 323??????????

But the difference is that a classic (80\'s) ferrari is worth about £28,000 and an 80\'s RX7 is worth about £1500. Lets face it a 308 GTS would still turn more heads (of the general idiot public) than an RX7, even if you would look like Magnum.
Even a nice RX (FD) with a long spec list that probably cost the best part of £35,000 only sells for say £10,000 which is a shame. :xconfused
even run of the mill daily drivers hit a point where their value increases, look at mk1 2 door escorts! Try and find a good-un for under £4k these days.
I still think that in 20 years time the FD will be going up in value as the dogs will have rotted away and there will be fewer on the roads. Thing is then a stock car will be worth more that a modded one!
I\'m not bothored what my car will be worth in the future. I love it to bits right now, drive it all the time and will spend way more on it than what its worth. I understand however that this is not what the thread is about!
I think it\'s far better to buy the car you have wanted and actually drive it - not just store it in the garage and hope it will be worth something in the future. Think of all those people who have never seen one before - I only ever saw 1 on the road in my lifetime which doesn\'t include car shows. I hate it when cars just dissapear off the planet - let the world see how wonderfull they are! :cool
Price will go down and down and down, the only Jap car thats a true classic in terms of Astons etc is the Toyota 2000GT and there are only about 10 of them.
The primary reason they will go down is they are expensive to fix after a blown engine, once a cars so old people think why am I spending so much keeping it going, £4000 for a rebuild and the car if I was to sell may fetch £6000? They\'ll notice that they could have alot more modern metal thats faster, better handling, more reliable, may look better for the same cash they are pooring away on their old motor.
Add to the fact the Barry Boys will start abusing the cars, joining the "scene", ruining it, the more mature lot will want nothing to do with them, be associated with them.. there will be more & more sheds, less and less well cared for cars.. downward spiral. It\'ll be just like cosworths.. :(
Think of this MGB GT, £90 per year fully comp insurance, no road tax, parts are dirt cheap, a mate of mine just had one fully restored looks like new full restore cost £2000. That won\'t even get a blown FD back on the road if the rest is immaculate, unless you fix it yourself....
The only nice cars left will be owned by you guys now that have kept them, you\'ll grown beards, will meet at country pubs to discuss the rebuilds :) over ale with twigs in, those cars will retain value, none of the others. :)

Oooooops, Sorry :spank !!! Nothing wrong with them, their good knock abouts. I was refering to the early ones with breez block styling!! but then it was the fashion at the time for cars to be styled like this!!! I\'m going to shut up now befor I dig my way to Oz!!!!!
My opinion: fingers crossed for all of us, the market for the FD will improove and the prices will start to go up (even if it is 10-15 years down the line) I intend keeping mine for alot longer anyway (unless something seriously major hapens......... New house, wedding and the arrival of triplets all on one weekend wouldnt make me sell mine :Giggle !!!)

While this is true, there comes a point when the number remaining on the road is lower than the demand, hence prices rise. Also a mint 240z will set you back low end E-type money these days, that is a jap classic.
Cosworths are coming back up in value now, I saw a mint 2wd Cossie whale tail up for sale at just under £14k recently! To think 5-6 years ago that would have gone for less than half of that!
I wouldn\'t say that an RX7 will ever be as collectable as an aston, rarrie or similar, but in time they will become more collectable again.
:-)
The 323 was conceived in a big hurry, when Mazda was big in the poo. The rotary engined sedans were suddenly "undesirable" , as you put it. The 323 is a huge success ! In the 80\'s it outsold the Toyota Corolla.
If you want 1)a reasonably priced car with 2) excellent reilability - the 323 is it. Is that what a "knock about" is? I agree the styling is very conservative, but 1) and 2) were the foremost design criteria .

Just to add, in 1995 - Cumulative production of the Mazda Familia/323 series in Japan reaches 10 million units.
Not bad for an "undesirable knock-about", eh?

I dont know if Cosworths are a good example - You would have to pay in excess of £3000 for a 89\' Sierra Sapphire cosworth!! And look at the Escort Cosworths - £14000 upwards!!
I think it depends if they get that \'cult status\' - as previously mentioned - look at the two door escorts? Even more so look at Capri\'s. It wasnt so long ago you could pick them up for £500. You look on Autotrader at the half decent running ones - you wont get one for under £3000. I see a Brooklyns for £8000 the other day

Just a thought here, Again, Did anyone see the FD advertised in the classic car mag about 18 months ago. had load done to it and was very nice, So I was told. Anyway, I agree here, it did take about a year to sell it, but it went for about 26K and it was a mid 90\'s version.
Like the 240Z and many others, Early Fords from the 70\'s RS1800. I feel it\'s quite possible for them to worth proper money in few years. For my money, I recon reasonable condition FD\'s have not gone down in value. Think about it 3 or 4 years ago a nice 92,93,94 version would cost around 7 to 9k, to day, the same car in very good nick, will still cost 7 to 9K, if it\'s a bit special, with some good mods, I recon you are looking most of the time, at around 10 to 12K. Something thats had the works done to it, all the way you could be looking at near 13 to 15K. Of course you can find cheaper, but most are bins. that need around 5K spent on them to get them up to scratch. :driving
It seems that every winter the FDs are getting broken up, we here about the ones on this club, but how many others are being broken that we dont know about, its just a matter of time, and our loved cars will start rising in value, and spares shoul be in ample supply. we just gotta hang in.
Gonna run mine to the ground! :)
Interesting thread. I doubt the FD will rise in price. As time goes on, we\'ll see more being lost due to the frequent accidents, rust and other causes making the RX-7 an even rarer site. Still doubt that is enough to make prices rise. There are a lot of RX-7\'s currently in the UK. Most of these have seen better days, yet they are still running and being retailed.
On the other hand, the supply from Japan is consistent and will probably remain so for a while - afaik, many of these are poor examples of an RX-7. Fact does remain however - a near standard, mint RX-7 in Japan will still sell for more than an importer is willing to pay. These are usually sold within the Japanese Domestic Market. I can\'t see why that model will not take place here too eventually in that standard RX-7\'s will be worth more here. After all, one would assume a standard FD not to have been thrashed the same way a highly modified one would.
I personally would never like to sell any from my daily, weekend and track RX-7. However, if I did I would make sure I still have just one. It may not be worth much in 20 years, but that would not bother me. I would pass it on to my kid(s) and expect it to be driven - properly. ;)
Australia perspective.
the FD cannot be imported here in large numbers because it was available locally at a hefty price of $70,000AUD.
This in contrast to say the Supra which are a dime a dozen.
Only Private imported vehicles with Japanese resident status can be imported.
thats how mine came in.
This has helped keep used FD around the $30 000AUD even for 1992
Supra turbos are going for 17K by comparison.
Recently the post 99 cars are arriving as they were not sold in OZ.
Dodgy damaged/repaired cars are showing up like before but you do find the odd genuine low klm Spirit R. Asking $75,000AUD
Aussie rules now dictate that only cars close to stock can be imported which also which elimiminates the thrashed drift cars or benefits of buying a cheap highly modified car just for the parts.
In Aus there is still hope for resale.
Limited version SP in awesome condition will still fetch 60K+ from the 100K new price.
I think you\'ll find they will go up in price after a while...
Why?
Well, the good RX-7\'s in Japan continue to hold their prices strong and as there are fewer and fewer good ones to be found (Than say 3 years ago!) they\'ll probably start to go up in price in Japan, as demand exceeds supply of good ones. The rough tat will continue to be cheap for those who are foolish enough to buy these.
In 1998 I sold a Corolla AE86 in the UK for £1,250 which was a fairly high price at the time. Now they\'re 20 years old, they\'re very collectable and sought after in good condition. We\'re paying top prices for & retailing top examples with some tuning for around £6,000 - £7,000 and they\'re not going to depreciate... Only appreciate.
The FD3S is one of the world\'s greatest sports cars (If you have a good one, but can be one of the worst if you have a rubbish one!). Rotary engines are their strength for those who know them and their weakness for those who don\'t. In Japan people aren\'t as afraid of rotaries as in the UK, so prices will go up for the pukka ones here... So that should have a knock on effect for the countries that import them.
Remember also, that Canada imports 15 year and older cars, so next year you\'ll start to see GOOD 1992 RX-7\'s begin to fetch strong prices in Japan, just like 1990 & now 1991 R32 GT-R\'s do.
Mine\'s a keeper for life and will go onto my kids someday, if we don\'t all lose most of what we have in a world war or another catastrophy...so as far as investment is concerned for me it doesn\'t matter. It\'ll never be for sale :D

Is that the one at Nostalgia. He had it longer than a year, when I first started looking around for one I saw that ad without a price so gave him a call, he wanted £37k for it. This was maybe 3 years ago possibly a bit longer, the most expensive one I saw other than that at the time was about £22k and it was a \'99 car with about 14k kms on the clock. I think he had taken it as part ex for one of his cobra\'s not realising what it was actually worth, maybe he had taken it for a spin and thought he could make money on it. I\'m surprised he got £26k for it in the end.
I have to say I think the prices will continue to go down for a while yet, especially with plenty of cheap imports coming in, but as Newera said the prices in Japan will start to firm up and that will mean less imports. On top of that more will be crashed or become uneconomical to fix (and hence be taken off the road) so the prices will start to rise. I think it\'ll happen in maybe 5 years or certainly they will reach the lowest they will go in the next 5 years.
Barry
I really do think that people selling their cars need to be a bit more patient,
there\'s been so many adverts recently where the seller has knocked 1-2k off the asking price after just a week or so
There\'s one guy selling at the moment that admittedly has just been made redundant that seems to be letting his fd go for 5.5k that has recently had a full respray AND a rebuild at WGT(i fully understand that he\'s probably desperate for cash so i\'m not knocking him for that)...it just seems so wrong to me :(
I am Surprised at the response to this one, I too have no plans on selling my thing. I have spent far far too much money on it to even begin to get anything like I spent on it. Yes I managed to get a dog. But we live and learn. I got sucked into the whole episode. And it just snowballed from there, classic situation. But that’s water under the bridge now. Today, at least I know what I have got. Which to me is worth a lot. I must have spent over 40K along with the 8K it cost me to buy the bloody thing. The up side for me is it’s a one off ish! Nemesis done a great job on the body and paint, and Pip at WGT has look after me regards the mechanical side of life. As you may know, it’s having the 20B with the chrome, bit put on it, which should be on or very near 600BHP when it’s eventually done ( almost a year now ) I Think it’s growing grass under it. The thing is, I am hoping it’s going to be one hell of a car when it’s back. The interior still needs a small bit TLC, but that will come. It’s going to be too mad for the road ( or me) I think. But it only goes as fast you put your foot down. So in short, I would sell it if someone offered in the region of 40K for it. Laugh!!!!! As we all know that is just not going to happen this side of the grave. So unless, I am starving to death it won’t be sold. Give us a sweet please hahahaha!!!! :Typing
