Title: Help with Oil Leak
Post by: Gman on January 07, 2006, 06:57:02 PM
When i got my car it had a small oil leak, getting a bit worse now so i think i will sort it out.  This is the descriotion of whats wrong from the guy i got it from;

yeah, there is a gaket that sits under the oil sump. There are a couple of bolts that hold it in place via the sump. The seal has gone on the bolts so oil leaks from the sump. Pip was the one who spotted it and said it was an hours job. Unfortunately not had the time to get back over to wgt to get it fixed.

Does this sound familar to anyone? if so what bits do i need to get to fix it?  Any help would be great.

I suppose its a good excuse for an oil change.

I think the sump gasket is supposed to be a proper b**tard to change.  I\'ve never done it but remember reading that the sump doesn\'t drop untill you move other stuff, subfame, tie-bars or something?  Good luck!

I need to have a proper look but from the explaination it sounds like i need to replace the bolts rather than the whole gasket.  If i need new bolts (with a seal???) or/and a new gasket where is best to get these?

Is the leak coming from the actual sump gasket or the little oil level sender on the side of the sump?

I need to get under the car to find that out, it doesn\'t sound like its a common problem.  I will be having a look on Saturday so hopfully i can see then.

Just managed to have a quick look under the car and there is a lot of oil under the car, it looks to be coming from the side of the sump closest to the rear of the car but i can;t see exactly where.  I may have to get a garage to have a look at it.

Gman!  might not be the sump?  could be the rear oil seal?

Have you checked to see if all the 10mm bolts are tight as it is on the sump?

You would really need to try and clean it well with degreaser, go for a run and pinpoint where it is coming from.

If it is the sump, check out the diagrams on iluvmyrx7.com - (not sure if it exists still???) you may be able to remove the sump without moving the engine etc. - there are a bunch of 10mm head bolts.  You would need a new gasket, need to completely drain the oil first of course (do the filter and oil change at the same time).  A hoist would be best, but you could do it on stands I think.

Have a good look under the car first, get some degreaser, water blaster, try and spot the leak.

AH!  I think I remember, one of the engine mounts has the sump incorporated I think?????  We use to use the Series 4 & 5 engines in old Mazda\'s - but changed the way the sump was fit (to a pretty normal type of sump without engine mounts in it.

So it may be more fiddly in that you have to undo one of the the engine mounts also.

Take some pics. for us if you can.

I think your right, there is so much oil under there that its difficult to see where its coming from, better get my marigolds on!

Hey, just looking in on the board for the first time in months and spotted this.

My advice is to call Pip about it. He may remember exactly where it was coming from as he was the one to spot it in the first place. He said to me it was an hour job and could be done with the engine in situ. I would have had it done at the time but time was tight. He said the leak was coming from the bolt seals rather than from the gasket itself, the whole thing is not standard setup and must have been changed when the rebuild was done by ReWorx, may also be worth giving them a bell as they did the rebuild.

All the best
