what size is the flywheel nut on a 2nd gen rx7 13b engine? whats the best way of locking the flywheel to release the nut?
cheers
Steve
54mm dia, a 56mm dia transit hub socket will also work :)
To lock it you can use some alu or steel angle iron bar with two holes drilled, which are aligned to bolt through to two adjacent clutch cover threads on the flywheel.
Best of luck,
Paul
P.S. A nice 3/4 inch breaker bar will bend a lot less than a 1/2 inch bar and as such should require a lot less effort to undo the flywheel nut :yes

Wav you may wanna tell him the use a mate to jump on the breaker bar tip when undoing flywheel nut. ;)
Babz\'s ecu gave no joy so will be towing fd down very soon!
if you need any dimensions for a locking bar i can measure mine, i had to buy a 54mm socket, think it cost me £27.00 somewhere on the net, where are you based in the country?
i also made a tee puller in order to get mine off without damaging anything. basically i followed the procedure on the rotary aviation rebuild vid.
this said remove the nut usually someone stands on the block and a friend jumps about a bit on the bar.
then attach the tee puller and tension it
then tap arount the edges with rubber mallet and it just sort of pops off.
ps the bell housing bolts are the same thread as the ones in the fly wheel, this is what i used for my tee puller
what happens if the engine is still in the car then ?

Yep that certainly helps :wiggle
And yeah bring it down as soon as you can, am running out of time to get everything done before I move.
Ta,
Paul:)

You will need to hold the motor somehow or else the engine mountings can break.
bollocks so its actually 54mm? just ordered a 56mm transit socket...hope it works!
i will need to lock the flywheel though what are the demisions of the bits you used guys? cheers

Don\'t worry, the 56mm transit socket works fine and is generally much cheaper and more widely available ;)
The piece of angle iron i use is just over 1 foot long and is probably around 40-50mm across on each flat by approx. 4mm thick.

sorry your losing me! do you just bolt it to two of the clutch mounting holes, and it lock against the stud from the case?
Steve

Yeah, mount it to two of the clutch cover threads and then have it locking against the floor.
Paul
P.S. Much easier if sump and pick is already removed, that way the block will sit nice and flat on the floor.
not gonna happen, im only removing the flywheel because its a vw/mazda one! the engines in a beetle...

Hmmm, well either get a piece of angle iron long enough to rpop agains\'t the floor from where the engine is sitting or find someone with the correct tool to borrow or copy dimensions off. Of course mazdatrix in US sell one i think aswell.
Paul
well its on the floor already....ill have to see how easy it is to move. two man job either way!
whats the torque setting when refitting? Is there a flywheel oil seal to check?
Steve
If its a 2 man job,how come I strip a motor and put it together by myself, nobody told me i need a mate to help me.!!!!!
well if you help me remove mine, ill help you with yours??? :Giggle
hows the rotary beetles?
Well you are a mate...so I have to help you...bring the motor,a DES and some GUINNESS,some containers and we will rip the motor apart....SURF BOY style.....anytime bro...bring it and see what rips in Sherfield.... :wave
well ive got an old lump i could do with rebuilding.....only needs an o ring or oil seal. compression is great but smoking like a bihatch! wheres sherfield?
Up the road bro.......Ports to South,M3 to Basingstoke,A33 to Sherfield...40 mins id say....anytime bro just give me a call,or mail me eradeklerk@yahoo.com................ :Talking1
ok bro will do! thanks very much for the offer....dont know when ill have time though!
:)
do that or go to a local garage and they can undo the flywheel nut for you. I see you are local. But havent heard a dub come past me with a rotary in it

ahh ill be OK. The beetle hasnt been back in portsmouth for a while now....its up at uni in hatfield with me now!
Steve
Hey Steve, if you have a spare flywheel nut and cannot get the one off the engine off then try using a chisel and a 4 pound hammer. I know it isnt good practice, but if you are by yourself then it works well enough.
oh and i know I am still crap for not ringing you.
cheers, michael.
