Righto, out and about today, put my foot down on the motorway, which was followed by a splutter at about 5-6k rpm. Slowed down, and noticed that at lower revs, it sounded like it was misfiring. As soon as you got above 3k though, it appeared to clear and although it sounded slightly different, it was pulling ok. A few minutes later the coolant light came on, and it was topped up with coolant accordingly. However, it was still creating boost, so its not a boost leak.
On the way back, it seemed to be the same. However, increased the revs to about 4500, when all of a sudden the car just slowed down loads and bogged down. After that, it was a struggle to accelerate and it sounded completely different. It absolutely stinks of petrol under the bonnet now, but its still creating boost and according to a friend it was popping loads of small flames
To summarize;
Complete lack of power
Bogging down loads
Too much fuel
Still boosting.
It appears to start ok ish, but i\'m at a loss as to what it is, but someone has suggested the manifold could have cracked? Could it be this, or have the tips gone to the great tip heaven in the sky?
Its an FD running a single and all the bits to go with it.
My old twin turbo did this, turned out it was over boosting an hitting fuel cut when giving it some welly.
But that would surely go back to normal. It sounds like it overboosted, but the wastegate should surely have stopped that and even so, why would it still be running like a bag of spanners?
Is it boosting to what it should be?
if u had lost a tip or two the boost gge wld flutter at idle and car wld run rough it wld also shake the car depending on how many tips have gone.i had 2 go and the car wld drive fine but wld idle like a bag of **** and gge wld flutter and was hard to start when warm.dont whatever u do try to boost it until u have found out problem..mine also is a single running uprated everything but my vac line to the fuel pressure reg split and i think i lost pressure to the reg at the wrong moment causing it to run lean as it was only boosting to 1 bar
Sorry to hear your having probs Dan, hope you get it sorted!!
Quote from: GmanIs it boosting to what it should be?
It was after the first incident, but after the second I didn\'t dare take it past 0.4 bar (and the fact that it took ages to get there).
Its still making boost, but it really feels like something is clogged up and holding it back. I haven\'t got a Cat, so its not that.
what is boost gge doing at idle as a blown tip will show up by fluttering due loosing compression as the rotor moves
The boost gauge is hardly moving at all.
Someone also suggested the plugs could be knackered?
When I had a problem with loose plug leads, it felt like it was bogging down above 3K revs, although it idled fine.

But does it flutter at idle? even slightly? it shouldn\'t move at all.
Paul
It\'s at -350mm/hg, and when I say hardly moving, its about +/- 1mm either side
Have you checked the boost/map sensor vac line is still connected? If it is still connected it does sound like you may have lost a tip. What boost were you running at the time?
-350 is very low for idle reading that is roughly what mine was sitting at with 2 lost tips/if they were not completly broken u wld get less fluttering..when i revd the car the vac wl increase but as soon as i let off the pedal it wld loose vac pressure..my bailey dump valve wld barely stay open once the car had warmed up..my vac reading at idle was normally about -550-600.i was gutted when it happened..i was getting lower boost reading on wot and when i was testing for problem vac line supplying pressure to the reg burst so lost fuel pressure at wrong moment and pop...if i had the money i wld put a v8 in mine have never known a car to be so tempramental there is allways something wrong with them it seems
Map sensor line is still connected - first thing I checked

Like all things, you get good ones and bad ones!!!
Simple cheep things first Dan: Plugs & leeds, also check evry pipe to do with the fueling & take it from there!
Jono
PLugs and leads are first thing on the list tomorrow. All the pipes appear to be connected and I think the smell of fuel is from the wastegate looking at it.
I\'ll speak to Ross later in the week and will possibly end up breaking it. Seems like a lot of hassle to rebuild it
Chin up mate, hopefully it won\'t be that bad.
even in standard form it seems there are endless split pipes/solenoids jamming overheating etc..seems inconceivable that a factory produced car with even mild mods wld prob need rebuilding at 60000 miles..has any fd ever made it past 60000 miles without going pop..mine was running every conceivable extra.skyline pump/uprated fpr/1600 secondaries/water injection/fmic/pwr rad/expertly mapped and set up and yet a burst vac hose and detonation occured..the safety margins on these cars when increasing perf are miniscule.much more so than a boinger.reason i like the v8 is approx 350bhp/350 foot pounds of torque six speed box 25mpg cruising but the potential with mild tuning for very fast car with litle or no chance of going pop.the rotary relies heavily on its seals,,water and apex and if they are put under just that little too much stress then they just pop
Ignore that, as it revs for the full range, but takes ages to do so.
It sounds exactly like this.......

Not healthy sounding........
Leading coil pack? Sounds a bit like its running on the trailing plugs only to me!
Can you pop the hood and record what it sounds like then. Any rattling or just sounds like its overfuelling? What\'s your ECU telling you? Change your plugs and leads, and flow test your injectors if you can anyway.
I haven\'t been able to find my spark plug puller, so i\'ve got to borrow one so I can check the plugs yet.
When it gets louder towards the end of the clip, thats me stood right in the engine bay.
There\'s like a scraping sort of tinny noise coming from the engine. New primaries were fitted about a month ago and the ECU isn\'t telling me anything different to normal.
Sorry take off the ps and aircon belt and see if the scraping is still there to make sure the noise isnt just a dry pulley bearing. I can\'t hear it in the clip.
I\'m assuming the water pump is okay.
A knackered MAP sensor, or split/loose hose would cause your bogging down symptoms, although you\'ve checked the hose you can still test the MAP sensor but you\'d need some figures and a multimeter first, not sure if it shows on the sensor list on the apexi.
If we were optimistic I\'d say it\'s your ignition, but you wont find out until you can pull the plugs.
A compression test would obviously put your mind at rest so chin up until that at least is done.
edit: only just seen your spec list. Take the ignition amp and water injection (or just make sure it\'s not permanently on) out of the equation .
when i changed the plugs in mine,i did the trailing, started to do the leading, food van came so i had some munch and forgot to put the leads on proply on the leading plugs,
any way its sounded just like that sound clip,
What was the resolution to this, or was there not one - apart from the worst..
Nope, it was the worst unfortunately. I sold it to a guy on here, with him knowing it needed a rebuild :(
Whilst I only thought that it needed a rebuild, it would seem that the knackered tips also destroyed the 5 week old turbo, and so the guy needs to get a new turbo (or the other one rebuilt) too. I think its at RX Motors being done at the moment
**** sorry to hear that dude, didnt even realise itd been up for sale. Good luck with the next one..
