Title: Engine Compression
Post by: Nath V on January 05, 2006, 06:35:54 PM
Hello,

I\'ve just had a RX7 compression tested that I\'m thinking of purchasing. The figures are as follows:

Front
5.7 / 5.9 / 6.2

Back
6.1 / 6.1 / 6.0

Whats the general feeeling on these figures, will I be very close to needing a  rebuild? The mileage of the car is 38k.

Thanks

I would say the figures are a bit low but more of a concern is the fact the front readings arn\'t very even, indicating a dodgy seal.

The RPM was 240.

Is this one to avoid or will I have a few thousand miles out of the engine. Im fully repaired for a rebuild, thats not a problem its just how soon. I know its a bit of a lottery but would it last say another 10k miles or so?

Confused as what to do now  :3Confused

It all comes down to price, if its cheap and the rest of the car is tidy then it could be a good deal. If the rest of the car is pretty shabby then go and look at a few others :)

not the best of readings at that rpm,but not dead.
Does it start well hot and cold?
If it does then it is worn but not too bad.
If you can spend a little more then do it.

Its a 1999 and its totally mint and original. 38k miles for £11,995 with a number plate thats worth probably £500 which Im going to sell as I already have a decent plate.

Starts ok hot and cold though, drives ok. Might see if I can negotiate a discount but I dont think he is going to budge on the price.

Good deal or not???

Hard to say,it is after all a 6 year old car,but then again it is also the best model of all of the FD RX7\'s that have been made.
You are right to budget for a rebuild fairly soon though.
Look at it this way, there are very few 99 on cars around. If you have the money and can afford to rebuild it,and also want to keep it for quite a while then I would say it is a reasonable car to go for.
There is nothing lose by offering less and wafting the readies under his nose, many a good deal is brokered that way.
