somthing to do with the number of splines on the half shafts IIRC. Apparently the MX5 VLSD will fit in the 1st gen casing.

The aussies use the whole Hilux axle as its really strong, i don\'t think just the diff will fit.

what axle do you have ? series 1 with drums, series 2 with solid discs or series 3 with vented discs ? I\'ll have a rummage around and see what I can find. I\'m sure theres a guide somewhere.

Ok, have a look at these.

1st this one

then this

http://www.rx7.org/jes/axles.html

the Americans talk in terms of GSL and GSL-SE ... as far as I can understand it. The GSL axle is equivilent to our series 2 and the GSL-SE is equivilent to our Series 3

Hi, MIke is right, the aussies use the whole hilux diff, and alot of the dag bosy simply weld up the centre. Crude but highly effective with these diffs withstanding 500hp and numerous hi rpm launches.
   cheers, michael.

I have been speaking to some mates over here while we are still stuck here and the hilux is what they use. The gearing is good when you put smaller road wheels on as opposed to the big diameter off road type.
Also very strong and fitted with LSD.
Just get the new mounts made up. Gartrac in or near Haslemere/Guildford are are good but expensive if you cant do it yourself.
I am considering oue my self in the future.
Now looking forward to the next 38hrs travel direct back to uk

thanks for the info

we want the easiest way possible realy

I.E. a diff for the original casing would be the best

so we will look in to the mx5 diff i think

thanks

you can use a torsen mx5 lsd from about 95 - 98.  just match up the spline and axle size.  this will drop into the RX7 diff - pinion gear stays in place just remove the old carrier and bolt the ring gear to it and refit.  Remember to mark the location and offset of bearings etc and it should mesh the gear just the same as before.  Much better than a vlsd.  One thing to note is that the carrier is narrower than the RX7 so does not engauge with so much of the axle spline - a bloke in the US who races them said he has not had a problem with this though (no doubt an issue if you\'re drag racing though)

Don\'t know if this helps but mine is an Jap import  1983 Savana LSD

It comes with a LSD so maybe you could possibly get one form Japan or the States?
