Title: SAFC2 v Blitz Piggy Back ECU
Post by: grinder on December 23, 2005, 12:33:00 PM
Hiya fellow FC owners :) :Thumbsup!

its been a long time since i started a thread in the FC section - so i thought i would make this a good one

i have recently purchased a SAFC2 ( from here infact in the last day or so ) , and i already have a Blitz MFCS ( multi fuel computer system )

so the million dollar question ..

WHICH ONE SHOULD I FIT ??  :3Confused

the blitz is a nice and simple plug and play item - there is only 3 dails on the thing - down side is that no one in the UK has heard of them and what they do - and only about 2 people in the states use them

i have contacted the UK importer for blitz and they are stumped aswell

now the SAFC has a wider range of users so i assume i can ask all sorts of questions and get some good answers

the SAFC has the nice screen so you can see at real time what is going on ( knock , revs , etc.. ) - where the blitz doesnt have this abilty ( it has a red light if you are running lean - but my AF guage will tell me this )

i have no idea what the results of either will be as i havent test them ( the blitz is plug and play where the SAFC needs to be wired in )

so not sure they best approach for this

just wondering if you guys have any ideas :)

Cheers

Stu / Grinder

( must stop buying toys for the FC !! :driving  LOL )

Grinder....why not get a stand alone ECU that way is easy to map the car toooo.....but anyway....back to the question....i think SAFC will be better as tuner will prob know how to use it........

Is like HKS FCON V RPO...they are good ECU but not many use them in here...

i know what you mean sam

but its the pure £££££££££££££ of a standalone that not good

im still tempted by the apexi ecu to be honest - you can get the FC wiring adaptor for something like 23.000 yen - which someone said is about £140 ( although not sure )

and i would assume that you dont need to mess around with the car wiring at that point

im not after mammoth BHP - just 200 at the wheels and i would be happy :D

Stu

i have been reading up about the Rtek chips - and they sound really cool - but they only support the S4 so far - although they reckon they will have a S5 version very soon

i have seen you around the rx7club.com site - they are a very strange bunch of people - but very clued up :D

keep an eye on Ausrotary there\'s always plenty of Microtechs going cheap in the parts trader section. There not very expensive when you work out the exchange rate. Either map your self or let Pip play, probably not be much more than what you\'ve paid for the two that you\'ve got now.

think the mt4\'s fuel only Stu. But if you keep watching its suprising what you can pick up. My lt12 was under £400 delivered brand new unused unit and loom still in the original microtech box.

are they they ones that you have to cut and wire into the loom ???

so the lt12 is the one to go for ?? or would the 8 do it ?

You only need a 8 stu lt12 will fire six coils/injectors the lt8 does 4 of each. don\'t go for a mt8 as these can\'t be upgraded now the lt8 uses stock coils the ltx8 uses the bosch aftermarket ones. As regards wiring its apiece of pi$$ i dont mined coming over and helping out. You can have it in and fitted in half a day. Couple of things to watch for are make sure you get a loom with it even if its only the plug and a few inch of wire, the early ones could only be mapped with the hand set you want one thats set up for laptop mapping (sticker on the back), make sure its configured for a two rotor (most are) and the very latest ones are set up for wideband a/f you don\'t need this but it makes mapping even easier if doing it yourself.

Sorry to high jack guys....

Kev, how do you find mapping the microtech, is it user friendly?? I know not many people use these in the UK, where can you/do you go for advise on mapping, etc :xconfused ??

so it a nut shell - i need to look out for an LT8 ( not the LTX8 )

and some wiring

if thats the case - i will have a look round and see what i can find :)

found a handset for one :

the new microtechs are LT8s (replaced the LT8) and the LT10s (replaced the LTX8) I have an LT10s with the uprated Bosch ignitors and coils, wired it in myself no problems until I stupidly swapped the trailing and leading plug leads round and flooded the car repeatedly! Took the whole loom appart to track the fault, messed around with the mapping, etc, etc in the end sent it to Tim at RX Motors who diagnosed the error in about two minutes! DOH!!!!!

I got mine for a good price new, no Stu, not under £100!

Depends on what you are looking to do with the car though, really you need to up the boost & increase fuelling. It can be done with a fuel pressure regulator and a boost controller. I don\'t know how the stock ECU would react to that though.

I\'ll keep a look out for you Stu theres a hand controller on ausrotary at the moment will probably go for less than the one on ebay.

with a decent wideband its fairly easy to map. Must admit i got Pip to map mine initially but since then as i\'ve done any mods i\'ve been tweeking the maps myself. Bit closer for you i think reworx are microtech agents.

where can you get an uprated fuel pressure regulator from and do you have to modifiy your fuel rail ?

Fuel pressure regs are easy to get hold of any of the vendors or ebay are a easy source. couple of different types either adjustable where you set the pressure you want or rising rate same again you set the pressure but as the boost increases so does the fuel pressure. Can\'t say for def with a fc but i imagine its the same place as the fd and cosmo build into the end of the fuel rail. Easy mod if you can braze or know someone you can is to cut the stock pressure reg of and braze a pipe fitting on in its place. Pipe from there to the inlet on the new pressure reg then the outlet goes to the tank return.
Make sure you put the pressure reg after the fuel rails not before as it regulates pressure in the rails by controlling the fuel return to the tank.
Pressure reg on my car is in the circle

Cheers mate, I\'ve not done any form of mapping before, but something that I want to learn. Do you have much experience at all?? Is it something you get better at the more you do/understand?? Figure it would be....

Some how think that I\'ll get the car mapped and do as you, tweak it as need be with improvements I make. At least I\'ll have a good base to work from(that will be safe)....Last thing I wanna do is blow it up, fiddling with things I shouldnt!

Also, have you found any site\'s or info with regards to tuning/mapping these ECU\'s- have been looking around AUSrotar, but can\'t really find what I\'m after :(

just bumping this back to the top

i think im going microtech route to be honest .. BUT .. in the mean time my insurance is due and i might aswell fit either the blitz or the apexi as a middle measure

SOOOOOO

which one shall i fit

the blitz is plug and play - the apexi needs to be cut into some wires ( now not sure if this will affect the fitting of the microtech once i find one )

the blitz looks easy to use - just 3 dails - the apexi a bit more complex but you can tune each 500 rpm step ( aswell as seeing Knock level , real time rev on a digi display )

SOOOOOOOOOOO

as a temp measure - which one shall i tell the insurance about :D

a QUICK answer would help as i need to insure her today or tomorrow - friday LATEST

cheers chaps

Stu,

Since the Blitz is plug and play, why not try it first, if you don\'t like it you can hoik it out pretty quick.  At least you can see how it differs from stock.

I have a blitz tuned standard ECU, which is fixed mapped for exhaust and intake mods.  Makes a huge difference at the top end and broader power band as well.  Plus no rev limit, which is a bit scary first time you leave the foot on the metal.  Not been tempted to go beyond 7700 yet, cos I don\'t know what would happen, but the A/F meter and boost gauge look sensible on WOT.  :cool

If you get bored with it, and fancy some wiring you can plumb the other one in.

i like your idea matey - its just how to insure the car with either of them on

thats the interesting bit :D

and id rather insure the car with the mod declared then i dont have to pay for "ammendment to policy"

so like i said - not sure how to progress !! LOL
