Ok, about lunch time i got a call from a guy i know who drives a stock 1994 UK Fd, It\'s a very nice car only done 26,000 miles but he says he has developed a Miss fire.
Basicly he was driving back from Dorset (well over 100miles). He had just come of the Motor way and was pulling off from a roundabout. He went throught first and second with no problem but when he put it in Third and put some power on he felt it hold back and when he pushed the clutch in it started Missing. I was told that he didn\'t open it up and it was at no more than 1/4 throttle. He says as soon as this happened he pulled over turned off and got it AA\'d back.
I have been to see the car (in the dark) and its odd, it misses all the time but it idles ok (a bit lower maybe but not a masive diffrence). I have had Apex\'s go on Second gens and they just don\'t Idle at all, they also are a pain to start this kicked up fairly easy from cold.
The Funny thing is this is the second car this week thats done this. I went to see one for sale, ok that was WOT in first and second and when he pushed the clutch in to go into third it started missing in exactly the same way?
The only thing that both cars had in common was they where low on Juice, My mates the light was just about to come on (the one for sale was on) and they had both been stood for a while before they where driven.
Does this sound like a failure? I have sugested he gets it Comp tested but it just seems realy odd how the two cars have done very simalar things?
What do you guys think?
Chris
I\'m no rotary expert, but... I was wondering what petrol was in the car, and what is it mapped for ??
eg. Optimax by all accounts looses octane points over time (e.g. like a few weeks), it kind of decomposes back to a base lower stock iirc.
If storing for even medium periods I\'d put in fresh optimax and a bottle of millers Octane Plus before giving it any stick.
As I understand it these cars (like most!!) are not too fond of det....Just a thought :chat
well my mates car is a UK spec and had just done somthing like 200miles so i\'d expect he would have filled it up and i know he only uses Optimax.
The car that was for sale was an Import and with it being a sales car i\'d expect them to have put 95 in it (becouse its cheap).
Chris
mine runs like **** when its been stood for a while, it will rev to 4ooo rpm ok but misses bigtime if u take it past. it was one of my leads arcing out when they get damp! there is a small water hose that conects under the plenum which in my case was leaking onto my ignition leads, once they get wet or damp they can cause problems with misfires, so can oiled plugs and dodgy coils.
I have shat myself a few times on track days when developing misfires but its been one of the above, also mine misses when fuel needle is just above the bottom line
There was a thread a while back saying if you have less than 1/4 tank of fuel left you should be careful as when you give it a blast the fuel struggles to exit the tank due to swirling, thus try to have a go in one that has over 1/2 tank of fuel at least.
This might not be the problem with the ones you have seen but you never know ? :wiggle

Really only a problem with some uprated fuel pumps as they can suck way more than teh normal pump manages.
I spoke to him about an Hour ago and he said the car had been stood for about two months (while its been Bad weather) He only uses Optimax and i know he treats it very well (gets serviced every 2k without fail)
I\'ve done a bit of reading up myself and from what i\'ve learned the import for sale could have blown a Tip due to Low fuel,Wrong fuel or being stood for Four months then getting hammered.
But to be honist i hope its not an engine failure with my mates car becouse he will be gutted as its his pride and joy. I just don\'t know why that car would have droped a seal? it is a Uk Spec car thats was at Proper Opp Temp with Optimax in (although it was low) serviced 100miles before it was put away. You would have thought if it was going to fail it would have gone going rather than coming back?
Anyway we\'ll see what the Comp test says.
What fuel pump is he running?
It can be almost anything. From months old optimax to sticking side seals which have let go.
Personally, I would not say it has thrown a tip due to low fuel level. I say this because there was no real WOT given by the driver and therefore, I assume he was off boost. Unless WOT was applied just before coming off the motorway.
Was the car driven hard through the journey and prior to just coming off the motorway?
Has he got a boost guage? If so get him to check it at idle. If it is fluttering like mad, even by a small degree, he has almost definitely lost a tip or has a stuck side seal. If this is the case, then get a comp test asap to know for sure, without wasting too much time trying to fix other problems that arn\'t there. If not, then first port of call would be to check plug lead condition and plugs (if they were not changed during the service).
Best of luck,
Paul
P.S. Also check map sensor pipe to see if it has come loose or cracked.
hi guys
his ur mate runnin a standerd ecu ?
i had a similer problem my mechanic checkd soo many things could\'ndt figure it out.
i had a power fc camander sittin abt for a while, wen i found out it had a standerd base map i fitt\'d it runnd it in, drivin abt n though i\'d put the foot down to c if the miss firin was still there guess wot ?
it was gone, it hessitats alilbit at times still needs mappd up but runnin smooth intill mu clutch startd to go afew days ago :reallymad
Sounds like fuel starvation to me .......... I have had this on track but you have to be cornering pretty hard and gunning it ........ with my uprated fuel pump this can happen as soon as you drop below ½ a tank
The other thing I have had with symptons like that is I developed a loose connection to my secondary injectors which meant the car worked fine till I got to the 2nd injector cut in point and then it went back fire crazy ....... actually the symptons you are talking about don\'t sound so dramatic.
Oh yeh, the other time I have had this sympton is when running a stock ECU with a free flowing exhaust ....... fixed with a PFC.

All fuels do this: not just optimax.
The car is bone stock bar the exhaust which is a race beat duel (with cats still fitted)
Well its booked in to be Comp tested so we\'ll see.
Bearing in mind the guy had just done 100? + miles from Dorset on a stock engine running 98ron fuel, engine is fairly fresh [28k] without a problem, I would be checking map sensor, plug leads, IC hoses / y pipe.
Grizzly - what happened to the MS02\'s?
