was wondering if anyone could help was driving on motorway yesterday and oil light kept comin on and off and the needle kept goin up and down, so just drove as slow as poss to get home which kept the needle at 4 and the light off . i assume it just needs oil; but the car was making a sort of humming noise to which it has never done. just wanna make sure its nothing else and just oilany help would be good thanks.
Dave, you do know that our cars burn oil, right? You need to keep the oil topped up all the time.
I think whats happened is that you are low on oil, and the faster the enige revs, th more oil is picked up by the pump. I think the light will will come on when the pressure is low, or when the level is low. So driving slowly caused the level to come back up again.
Not sure about the noise, though, - you sure you havent heard it before. I think if you had run really low, you would have siezed the engine, (usually the rear rotor).
Another possibility is that the connection is bad, a common thing on the 3rd Gen (you dont say what car you have). The sensor for the gauge is under the oil filter, the connection to the wire gets grubby, and then the gauge misbehaves, so it might just be this, but I am not sure this would cause the light to come on.
You would have been very low on oil just as Martiny has posted.
Get some oil in there ASAP! (and consider yourself lucky.)
thanks for your help is a 1992 type r with recent rebuild.
wot sort of oil do you suggest as hav only owned for about 6 weeks so yet to buy any. would it be ok just toppin it up, with a different oil to that of the last owner? or ring him and find out what he used.
and that noise could hav been driving on the motorway roads once i change the oil ill take it for a run and see if i still notice it.
thanks
normal 10w/40 castrol or similar no need for synthetics as u are only going to burn it anyway
KEEP topping it up Dave, we use about 1/2 litre per 1000 miles, some use more, some use less, depends on the driving style !
Yes normal mineral or semi synthetic is fine.
topped up ther oil today and took her out for a drive to see if all ok, but even after driving for 15 or so mins when i put my foot down the needle jumps up again then right back down again when i stop? any ideas wots the oil pressure on generally when you drive?
cheers

The needle jumps to where ? 10 bar ?....comes right down to 2 bar ? when you stop........you have to give accurate readings of the oil pressure for anybody to comment on....cheers mate

What you say sounds normal. The stock oil pa gauges do not read all that accurately.
Was the oil low before you topped up?
yes the oil was low but i topped it up to full took it out for a drive to warm up then checked again and was still full.
but when driving it was jumping from 2 bar which is where it normally has been, and as i accelerate it jumps up to 6-8 then back down again, but no oil light is coming on just the needle jumping.
sorry for being vague before.

You got good pressure bud...no probs...lash the beast now :cool
Dave, as the revs drops, the pressure does drop, this is normal. When you say the needle "jumps" the problem is the connection, as in my previous post.
Did I already say you need to top it up REGULARLY?
wot can i do about the bad connection then?
you did say top up regulary and i will do now.
wher bouts are u surrey?
I\'m in Hersham, near Walton.
I\'m real pressed for time now, but if you remind me on here on Wed night, I will post up some info on where to look for that connection, unless someone else can help in the meantime ! :-))
