Title: running badly FD3s
Post by: Eddie on December 16, 2005, 07:57:16 PM
Hi I was wondernig if anyone could shed some light in my problem I am going to get it taken into WGT and looked at and mapped but need to know if driving it down may be Okay.

firstly the car has been sat for months and only been run a couple of times.
In this time I have fitted a new trust FMIC , reposistioned rads fitted an Apexi PFC, fitted various gauges changed the oil and plug leads.

The car seemed to be running fine with all this done.

My problems started when I flooded the engine last week and I followed the plugs out routine and all of that, got it started, I went back out two days later and tried to fire her up again but nothing so ran through the flooding routine and she started but sounded like a tractor which I believe is normal sometimes when they have been flooded, I finally got it started but I then run out of fuel(I have not changed the fuel filter) put optimax in and she fired up straight away

I was wondering if I may have placed the leads back on upside down anyone know which leads go to which plug?

Now I have been out every day to run her but it has become difficult to start I need to put my foot to the floor to stop any fuel going in she then starts up after about 5 seconds. but runs really rough  for a while and the engine vibrates really badly but after keeping it above 2000rpm she seems to settle down but still sounds like shes a tractor, eventually she quitens down but it takes ages and she still vibratees a lot

It seems to be the around the down pipe turbo area which sounds like its vibrating the car.

Hope someone can possibly give me some information, before I take it down to WGT as I dont want to kill it driving it down.

Thanks

Lee E

Could try something basic like ensuring the plugs are actually clean, torch them etc, and also resetting the ecu.. remove negative from the battery, hold down the brake for half a minute, then try again. Edit: I can check the leads for you in the morning if need be, no idea of the symptoms of them being reconnected wrong mind you :)  Edit again! : What plugs have you got btw, 9s 10s 11s etc.. and does it stall if you leave it to idle shortly after it starts? Mine occasionally does (and promptly floods) as its warming up unless i catch the revs in time but im running 11s which im positive is the \'problem\'

Sounds like the plugs are fouled and need a good run to clean them up. If i start my car up more than two or three times without giving it a good blast i get similar problems even if i keep it running on mid revs and wait until its up to full temp before shutting down. Yet as soon as its had a blast its back to normal and starts first turn.

hi  and thanks for the quick responce.

I am running 9,s both at the mo and I have just ordered some 7\'s and 9\'s got 4 ngk 7\'s and 4 ngk 9\'s P\'s for 25 delivered:) bargin

wedgiekray Reseting the ECU I was not sure this would work on the APEXI ECU I have installed, but I wil give it a try

wedgiekray If you could check the leads that would be great just to make sure.

I think it would stall if I let it idle once started I need to keep the revs up for a short time as it felt it would stall

Wow 11\'s are a cold plug mate is this on a standard car?

I did not want to take it for a blast as I was not sure it would get me home:( the car has been a dream runner since I got her 2 years ago, I will give this a try once I get some new plugs.
When I removed them I gave tham a good sanding to clean the plugs but they were not perfect and I could not see any white of the electrode.

Thanks for your help keep it comming:)

You\'ll find that sanding the plugs is a bit of a waste of time. Heats about the the only way of cleaning them up, hence why i need to give mine a good run after a couple of starts. I\'m another one running 11\'s due to misfire problems at 5k. According to Pip the volume of air the big Garret was putting into the engine was blowing out the spark.Iridium 11\'s cured this but the down side is they foul easily.

sorry must have been reading with my eyes closed, no the reset ecu procedure wont work with the apexi, have you got an fc commander you can just check all your sensors are okay? although the cat overheat lamp would light up if not. As above though it genuinely sounds like your plugs are fouled up and you\'re probably a bit too nervous to boot it whilst its misbehaving, see if you can torch them, or i read oven baking them works (but please dont quote me :) ), if you have gas hobs then maybe that\'d help.

Alternatively could the injectors get clogged up if you run out of fuel and pull in a load of crap?

Thanks again guys

kev-yorks I could only dream of having a big single blowing me spark out:) you must have some power in that mate, new plugs on the way so I will ditch the old ones as they looked dirty.

wedgiekray how can I tell if the sensors are not okay I checked them on the PFC but they were all reading a voltage, I will do some hunting  on what I should be seeing sensor wise, the heat light is not on at all, but today after giving a WOT ans letting of I saw the heat light flicker on an my knock reading went a little high so I stopped

I thought about the crap in the injectors and filter, so I will change my fuel filter nice job I believe:).

Hope its just the plugs as I was just about finished doing what I wanted to her.

Thansk once again.

If the sensors are dodgy they\'ll (i believe) be highlighted on the display (ie. I think background is blackish), and the cat light will be lit. The knock reading may be artificially high whilst you\'re driving around after flooding it, at least that\'s what i\'ve seen, give it a long boring run, 15mins etc, before going wot see if it flickers then, although if you\'re in no rush may as well wait for the new plugs. I guess you could try a garage to flow test / clean the injectors. Have fun with the fuel filter :)

ps. my car\'s stock twin turbos 330rwhp running 1.1bar of boost hence the 11s :)

Are you still running base map? Becouse that does tend to run on the rich side and dodgy plugs wont help.

Could be several things, plugs are an obviously first choice, heat in oven does work or a blow touch.
If your leads are shot you could be losing spark. Got whole Magnecor range in stock for next day delivery. http://www.rotaryart.uk.com/acatalog/Magnecor.html
If you injectors are clogged you could try some injector cleaner. http://www.rotaryart.uk.com/acatalog/Royal_Purple_motor_oils.html

hI Grizzly Yes still running base maps and I thought it would not help andmy plugs do look fouled

Gary got some plugs and yes Leads was my next option, and with it running empty on the fuel I am changing the fuel filter and gogin to get some injector cleaner, may as well do it all at once, thanks for the PM on leads I will take a look.

Cheers
