Title: Possibility of a 7 second RX-7 to come from Oz for ROTORSTOCK 3!
Post by: Glenn Butcher on December 15, 2005, 03:45:03 PM
Hi all,

There is a possibility of an RX-7 coming across from Australia for ROTORSTOCK 3.  BUT (always a but!) we need to find funding to do this.

There are a few options, in that we either have an individual company fund the entire lot, or a number of companies to fund it.  Sticker/naming rights are available for the time it is here, and if you/your company would like to use it as a promotional tool for other shows or events around the time this may be possible also.  Company of course doesn\'t have to be related to the car business, as it would be good exposure for any company.

Rough budget is around GBP 8K - 9K to get the car across and back, to have 5 crew members brought over and back, tow car hire, their accommodation etc..

It is the TCR RX-7 (pictured below).

We are open to suggestions, and would love for this to happen.  But the Club isn\'t in a position to fund this, we can certainly help publicise it though!

Hi mate,  not 100% sure at this stage.  I would have thought a few weeks (but don\'t quote me on it).  I have asked my contact in Oz for some further information.  Will let you know in the next few days hopefully.

Sounds awesum to have such a Rex at the next Rotorstock, and a great idea. Not sure what other members think (non vendors companies that is), but could we maybe chuck some pennies in a hat or something similar. I would\'nt mind putting a bit in, I don\'t meen loads of money each. I realise like myself we all have our own personal overheads (mortgages/kids/rent etc).

If we don\'t get enough dosh together then maybe we could give the money raised too some sort of good cause/charity. If everyone was in agreement  :Thumbs-up . Just an idea peep\'s what you guys n girls think...cheers Leigh.

What we have to ascertain(sp) are their needs for the time period that they are here....some expenses are set one i.e.plane tickets, car running expenses etc....the variables are their accomodation, food and all the other tsitska\'s that go with it.....give us a breakdown Glen\\Clive so we can have a broader picture cos then we can identify a cost which we can contribute to...personally i dont like just opening my wallet and cant see where the money is going to.Will always contribute towards an identified part of the whole exercise....make sense...no...ill try some time later.

p.s.they will surley contribute towards the whole excercise.?

Hi all,

A little more information, we have actually been working on all of this since RS II.

The ability to bring a full on Pro RWD tube chassis RX7 capable of reliable 7 second times is certainly an option, but one that will take some financial funding to turn into a reality.

Bottom line we are still looking at $20,000 to bring a car and team.   Having said that, this equates to just 8500 - 9500 pounds depending on the exchange rate.   This covers the following things;

1 x Race car (transported there and back) - $5000 Australian
5 x air fares (race team) - $9000 Australian
2 x car hire (two cars for transport) - $1500 Australian
5 x accommodation (race team and myself) - $2500 Australian

Total rounded up - $20 000 Australian

If the Race car deal is going to go ahead, you guys are going to need to find some funding to make it happen.   Having said that, the owner is happy to have the car ‘blank’ so any possible advertisers/ sponsors get maximum exposure whilst in the UK.   Food for thought, but a huge opportunity for the smart investor.

So looking at it, we could reduce costs by providing Cars, and Accomodation.  But the reality is that we still need to fund the car coming across and back, and the crew.

We are not expecting individuals to put their hand in their pocket, but more to spread the word and ask companies you work for or know of to come on board.  To put a car together like this costs mega $$$\'s - experience of drivers, crew etc. is something built up over time.

It certainly would be special if it can happen.

Was going to say Gary Gooding has a tubbed RX7, give him the money and you\'d have your 7 sec car.
1st you\'d be supporting a UK car and at the end it would have some value, not just wave good bye to it as it sails off.

7 sec car for 9 grand?  Really? (@ Gary & Carl)

I\'m kinda torn on this idea.

Part of me would love to see/hear/feel this car going up the trip and posting a time that\'d numb the other Jap crews into silence.  It\'d be wonderful to actually see this happen.

The other part is the bit that\'s looking forward to seeing the tuners who are currently pushing the times down get there bit by bit.  I remember the excitement of the last few years when we saw major milestones broken by Re:Worx and Dragon.  I wouldn\'t want to see anything take away from their achievements.

It would certainly be a huge draw though...

we only have 2 cars that run  sub 11 seconds in the country
Most don\'t even run sub 12\'s, lots of people try extracting high power out theres and end up blowing it up, plenty a people in this world with money
so just throwing 9k on a car is far from any gaurantee of achieving a 7 sec run or even close to a 7 sec run.
This kind of performance requires more than just money, hence not many 7 sec rx7\'s in the world.
Title: Possibility of a 7 second RX-7 to come from Oz for ROTORSTOCK 3!

For some people, especially those who already have partially modded cars such as Geff and Ross 9k could be all the additional needed to make their cars significantly quicker.
I was not suggesting that 9k could do it from scratch, but the rotary scene here is certainly not a big money earner, and most of us tuners here have carried out our work on our own cars on very limited budgets.
So a sum of money such as 9k could do alot for anyone who is more than half way there that\'s all.

BTW,I am not knocking the idea of seeing a 7 second car over here,it is just that if someone is going to sponsor the car for that sort of money then they may be better off doing it on a car that is not going to be here for a short time only.
It might be a better thing to sponsor a car such as Geffs,or Ross\'s that will be able to give a long term advert at numerous shows over a long period of time.

On the other hand the car itself coming over from OZ may well encourage many more to buy into the rotary over here when they see what one can really do.

Quote from: g11aryWas going to say Gary Gooding has a tubbed RX7, give him the money and you\'d have your 7 sec car.
Lets be realistic - it takes more than a few grand and tubs to run 7s. How many Rotors are running 7s globally - not really that many. And those that are running them have untold setup knowledge which I imagine counts massively! Look at oz, 10 second cars are ten a penny. So are 9s - without tubs or any thing that trick. The difference between an 8 second car and a 9 second car is HUGE - the diff between an 8 and a 7 second car - massive again.

A 7 sec car is a massive investment - a nice G-Force transmission would go you a chunk of the 8-9k for a start. Huge rear end a load more. Then you need a 1000hp - thats not a cheap motor! The list is never ending honestly. Look at Glenns invoice in the other thread - thats the kind of thing you are looking at for a car of that magnitude...

Dont get me wrong, 8-9K would move us a long way forward no doubt and we\'d probably have some thing tangible for keeps in the uk. Hell, give me 20-30K to make up the difference and I\'ll buy Flaco\'s R100 - a 7 second package with pedigree fresh from the NHRA museum :InLove

Have to agree with Rich! It was a suggestion that came forward, and I personally think it would be something sensational for everyone to see/hear.  Amazing burnouts, incredible speed, noise etc. etc.

I don\'t want to start another fight about all this!  IT IS NOT A UK V\'S AUSTRALIA THING! :)

Again, it was a suggestion, a very good one.  It is just a pity that it takes money to do these things.  Even to just get a car and crew across to the UK - let alone build one!

Not ever intended to start a fight, only suggested Gary as he is tubbed, has rear end sorted I believe, has engine and turbo. Thought that he would not want to much to finish, so most of the money would not be used to buy parts but make it run. He is possible the closest car ready for it in the UK. Thats the only reason I said that, hell give the money to me and I\'ll finish mine. Was just an idea like Glens that is it possible to support a UK car to do and have it in the UK for a long while, or just spunk the money on a two day run. Both would be awesome to see.

you don\'t need 1000hp to run 7\'s ... you just need a lighter car. Just look at the all motor cars around the world. circa 600hp (300 of that on gas) and very low 8 second passes at least

Don\'t forget that a certain rotary tuner is already the record holder by a significant margin under 9 seconds in the UK ... but not on 4 wheels ;)

There is no fight mate just advising that if money was the only thing standing in the way of having a 7 sec rx7 then lots more people would have one.
But as rich said apart from a serious amount of dosh its the knowledge to be able to build & tune such a beast on probably alcohol at probably 40+psi boost
is beyond the level we have attained as yet in the UK.

IMHO I think it would be a fantastic idea. I\'m looking at this as an opportunity for all in the rotor scene not just a case of "us and them". I can see the negatives but I feel the positives far outway the negs. I\'m sure if the car did come over the drivers and crew etc would be more than willing to pass on some knowledge/tips and idea\'s (correct me if I\'m wrong Glenn !!!!) to help the guy\'s that are knocking on the door already. It would also send a pretty clear message to all the non rotor buffs that there are quick cars that dont have pistons and what better place than RS3. And as much as we enjoyed the jet cars (me & the missus & kids) I\'d much prefer to see a rapid rex flying the flag over the weekend.

Fingers crossed it happens and we have an excellent addition to a great weekend  ;)

Jase

p.s hope this hasnt trod on any toes

any chance of Mazda stumping up some ££\'s ? it\'d be great advertising for the rotary (hence Rx8) and they have already featured a drag racing Rx7 in the Mazda mag ... just a thought and I\'d guess its already been thought of ?

My other thought is can this be included as part of a larger trip i.e as a stop off on the way to Peurto Rico or the USA ... I\'d guess costs could be shared out then ?

if the money could be arranged, i would definately plump for bringing the jap boys over, as you are guaranteed a result from it.
It says in the note glenn got, \'a car able to run reliable 7 second runs\', whereas even if nine grand did get a uk car up to spec, there is no certainty it will hit 7 secs by rotorstock, or even work at all!
I would love as much as anyone to see a bonkers uk car, hopefully someone with too much money will get involved in the idea one day soon, but due to the rotorstock reputation being on the line, plus a lot of money at stake, bring the jap guys over, sit back and smell the tyre rubber.

tough call this one! I think having a 7 secong rotary run in public on British tarmac would certainly let the British public realise that there is so much more yet we can get out of the rotary engine (I don\'t think many non-rotor enthusiasts realise the potential), I think it would give us the inspiration we need to push the boundaries even more (not saying that Geoff, Ross, Carl, Gary G and Tim aren\'t pushing the boundaries - but they are the top of the UK scene so to see IN THE FLESH what the world top cars are capable of, would be an inspiration). The filp side is wouldn\'t it be great for a UK car to be able to run those sort of times? How far off that are we here though? As has already been said, to run 8s or 7s isn\'t just down to throwing cash at the car, it requires top drivers, crew and a very well sorted car.

I for one would love to see a 7 second rotary run the Shakespear County raceway, even if it is just to wipe the smirk off the faces of the GTR and Evo communities! If we had the chance to see how the Aussies do it, next year maybe one of the UK cars would be in the in the 7s!?!?

What would happen if the TCR RX-7 broke on the start line and wasn\'t able to continue the weekend. The Crew would still need paying and car would need shipping back still all for a 7 sec\'s tubbed motor. That would be a lot of money wasted.

Would they be able to pull off a 7 sec run in the uk, with our weather also our tracks aren\'t like there\'s.
We wouldn\'t be proving much to the other communities by buying another car over to compete.

PERSONALLY I\'d much rather see OUR TUNERS complete the goal by themselves, which hopefully they will in time, given our support.

May be im just bias towards Gary G. I know how much has gone into it. Cash, Hours, Development etc. ITs not just been thrown together from a stock fd. He is not on here to vouch and dont really think he is interested in cat fights etc ( He has far more pressing issues at hand)

I agree it would be nice to see a oz special but what would anybody learn from it. Its just my opinion. Seems a bit like inviting the space shuttle to your local air show.
Spend your money wisely ££££

No ones taking any thing away from Gary or his car. I\'m sure he will be first to admit that its unlikely to run 7s any time soon tho - the testing and setup of a full on drag car to get it working right let a lone \'competitive\' has got to be mammoth. I dunno how far away he is but I guess thats at the back of his mind at the moment and rightly so.

This isnt a debate as to who should get 10K to run a 7, cause lets face it it isnt going to happen! The idea (albeit a very expensive!!!) is/was to have a spectacle for other Rotary fans to enjoy at RS - or thats how i see it any way; RS is already diluted enough with other jap tat :) so some thing centrally rotary like this (or some thing else suitably ROTARY) would be a good crowd pleaser and help to cement RS as a ROTARY event...

Thanks Rich for putting this all back into prospective !.

Yes it would be awesome to see an Aussie car turn these times on U/K soil but we know that this won\'t happen even though the ground work has been done to bring these guys with this amazing car over, unless of course we have a benevolent lottery winner in our midst ?.

The idea of Glenn posting this up is to show you all that even in the depths of winter things are still happening to bring an even better Rotorstock together for all to enjoy.

To me the very best car to have at Rotorstock would be the winning LeMans car,the 787b.
As for the thoughts that money of the amount being suggested would have no affect on current UK cars that are already quick by UK standards,I think that some people are living in La La land. That kind of money,in addition to the money that has been spent up to now on those cars and also no doubt will be spend in the future anyway has got to make a pretty big difference.I am not saying it would make a 7 second car,but it must be pretty close.
That sort of money could make quite a significant difference to a car.
The thought about the car coming over from OZ and breaking was pretty interesting.

I always thought Rotorstock was a showcase for our beloved cars? A 7sec drag car [rotary] is MUCH more attractive proposition that those JET cars, bearing in mind we are talking Japanese  and the best to date in the UK is 9sec. We are a small community surely if this can happen it would be a spectical.
What would be even better though is a UK ROTARY actualy winning the event, be it a 10sec car or a 8sec car, if there are people able to put money up for this event I feel it should be put into the UK rotary scene.

Oh well - at least the thread has been popular

I agree that putting the 8-9K into a car here would make a difference.  However I personally don\'t see a RX powered car here in the UK (unless it is brought in from another country) running a 7 for at least 5 years.

It is an incredible achievement, I just wish that you guys could witness a  car like this for yourselves on the 1/4 mile.

If I had that sort of money myself to spare (apart from putting into my car) I would prefer to do this.  But it is my opinion and it is something that I just wish I could share for all of you that haven\'t seen/witnessed a car like this running on the strip.

I always have a good chat to Gary Gooding about it each time we go to a track, is that if only you guys could witness some of these cars running in Oz you would be absolutely amazed.

I personally can\'t wait to see Ross, Geff, Tim, etc. etc. run down the strip and run great times/mphs.  It sends a chill down my spine everytime I see something like this happening on the track.  I really mean that!  Even the 9\'s, 10\'s, 11\'s, 12\'s 13\'s - I know what it is like, I have done it many years ago.  It is an awesome thing to watch and do.

Anyways, I thought it was a great suggestion and if the expense wasn\'t there to do this - it would be exceptional.

There is still a chance that cars may come across from Oz/US/PR etc. etc. but possibly not this year.  We want to make this event a HUGE thing - on the world stage, where everyone knows about ROTORSTOCK.  Doing something like this would make it that for sure.

I\'m hoping that Ivan is going to make it with his 3 rotor RX, that will be awesome! :)

Hey, just kidding John - I agree with Carl, I would love to see the 787B more than anything.

I do confess though, I like to see the jet cars, they are awesome, I think they attract people that are necessarily as Rotor mad as you and I, but they do take up a lot of time.

As a compromise, when Moller gets the Skycar going, we could maybe arrange a flypast !

Been thinking carefully Glen....why does the club not approach some of the leasing companies\\rental companies......these people have huge budgets and are always willing to do a partnership deal with an organisation in return for business...not only do they sponsor big events but they also accomodate organisations\\associations and clubs. The market is so competitive amongst them that they fight to get\\sponsor\\partner events in order to get their name out there.
Some of the names that come to mind is.....Velo Leasing,Lex Leasing,Budget,Avis,Toyota Forklift etc.
An educated letter from the club will always secure you an interview with the relevant people.i.e Business Partnership Managers\\Directors.

Have we thought of TV coverage for ROTORSTOCK..i.e. a short program on some of the numerous TV channels\\programs...again only takes and educated letter.. :Typing

Just a thought Glen and a lot cheaper, whats the chance of getting one of the top Aus tuners across for Rotorstock. Giving a bit of a tuning school to help us along with hints, tips etc. Possibly even doing some mapping on the strip for a suitable fee.

Dream on :(

We live in a small country who does every thing to disuade the small company or individual to excel any more in one way or another - \'recreational\' motorsport is always under threat in the UK from what I can make out - instead of being (comparatively!) embraced like it is on other continents. While people are constantly moaning about and trying to shut down race circuits, and whilst there are only 2 (and lets face it by aussie standards - fairly rank!) drag venues in the UK sponsorship for anything but main stream motosport like F1 and WRC will ALWAYS be minimal...

Hi all,

I guess getting money together for doing anything related to Jap Import Racing/Drag Racing especially Rotary stuff is going to be hard in the UK...

BUT - a lot of the money that is put into cars in Australia comes from the pockets of individuals, not companies/corporates etc.

Oz is a pretty small country really compared to the UK, I personally think there is a LOT more money available here.  But why is it that the drag racing scene here is not filled with super fast cars?  I don\'t know? I know the weather has a lot to do with it - but it doesn\'t rain every weekend!

As I have mentioned, I would really love for you guys to witness some of these cars running down the strip.  Check out this thread here: http://ausrotary.dntinternet.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=46604

Again, I\'m note trying to emphasise an us v\'s them type thing - I would just love for you all to watch some of these cars run down the strip.  I would also love for a UK built car to be running 6\'s, 7\'s, 8\'s on the strip!

If they need 9k to run in the UK, then they need to be prepaired to turn up at every school fete going for a couple of weeks. Are there any motor shows a week either side of Rotorstock that would pay a few quid to have a 7 second drag car there, TopGear, anything like that. When the Jap boys were over in their drift machines, they were run around like working girls, doing every show in town! Think outside the box... or have a box to think inside of that is bigger than the box your ment to be thinking outside of.

Hi Rich!

Don\'t get me wrong, I\'m hanging for more cars here to be in the 9\'s and even 8\'s.  I know you guys can do it, but as you well know - it takes time/money/development/good crews/chassis builders/tuners/you name it! to get cars consistently running sub 9\'s/8\'s/7\'s etc.

It will certainly happen - I CERTAINLY want it to happen!!! :)

Allo mate!

Yes - we need more people like you, just asking doesn\'t hurt as you say!  Even if we can\'t get an Oz car across - it would be great to have more company by-in to the event.  We are certainly trying, Andrew Nash (jinx) has done wonders, Andrew has put a list of companies together which we have contacted via Christmas cards [edit!] with rotorstock reminders etc. (around 170 companies I think).

All this time we have been trying very hard with Mazda UK, and some very unique contacts we have - to try and get the 787B here (actually since the very begining!) but with no success to date.  It is obviously a very expensive thing moving cars and crews around the world.  Perhaps we will get there one day with the 787B - that is my ultimate aim also.  But to be honest, after all our efforts it still isn\'t looking very likely.

All we can do is keep trying!  and putting on a great event.

Rich,
Dreaming is a good thing, without it no one would ever do anything new.And the population here is bigger than OZ,so it should be feasible really. After all my car has received a certain amount of limited sponsorship in a number of way\'s.For example,Ross (Dragon),Tim (RX motors) Gary (Rotary Art),Francesco Iannetti,Tech Dot engineering company,Clive (Shy Auto) to name a few.

Glen,
You may have forgotten that there are plenty of really fast cars over here.
I have seen road legal cars over run in the high sevens, and I mean totally road legal.
Also there are many other drag cars that regularly run in the 4\'s,5\'s and 6\'s that are very impressive.
They may not be rotaries but they are still here to see and on a regular basis too.So seeing a quick car is already available to all.

If this car did come it would indeed be very impressive, but also maybe it could be possible to persuade some of the Peurto Rican boy\'s or even Abel Ibbarra to come over?Their cost\'s maybe even cheaper,as they don\'t have to travel as far,and they are even quicker.
Regards
Carl

Any Japanese cars in the 7\'s??  Top Fuel and Funny cars yes for the 4\'s, 5\'s, & 6\'s - most are aware of this.  But are not interested!  I\'m not talking about these cars?

I know that there are many many other cars available, these guys are the only ones that have approached us about running their car here in the UK at ROTORSTOCK.

Carl - you know me, if you can get these other RX\'s and their owners interested in coming across.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I certainly know of a few others that can run these times, and YES it may be cheaper to get other cars across.  But can we persuade them???? who is going to pay for it? that is what this is all about really.

I know you of all people would love to see a 7 second pass in the flesh from a rotor! :)

Unfortunately i think you are right, i remember the problems Richard Noble had squeezing money out of British companies for his supersonic land speed record attempt. Bringing a 7 sec car over is a great idea and would be amazing to see but British companies only seem to stump up if there is a guaranteed sales return on their outlay. Im very surprised that Mazda dont want to get more involved, they are selling plenty of RX8s in the UK, it wouldnt hurt to put a little money and publicity back into something like this.

Sorry if this comes across OTT or patronising - its not meant that way but the words sponsorship and Rotorstock in the same sentence are a bit like fingers down a blackboard for me at the mo. Dedicated Mazdaistes should look away now.

As far as I can tell from attempting to deal with them this year, Mazda UK would be totally unmoved by ANY application for sponsorship.  In the unlikely event they read this forum and would like to dispute my opinion - Clive has my contacts. I would not respond by hanging up, telling them the office was closed (mid afternoon) or furiously demand to know how they got my number. Someone else besides Clive and I can chase them this year - I won\'t waste the time and neither should he.

Rumour has it that they last moved a 787 outside the US when Ford aquired a controlling interest in them - and that was at the whim of a curious European board member. Someone told me recently how much money Mazda US spent getting the Renown liveried Le Mans car to Sevenstock (last year?) - the figure was absurd in UK terms but in the states sponsorship is \'easier\' as an idea because corporate tax rules and business expectations are different.

Mazda UK know that the bulk of the RX-8\'s they sell do not go to enthusiast owners and in my, admittedly, small experience of them don\'t see the enthusiast market as somewhere they play. (With the possible exception of the MX5 - but they have shifted more than a million of them.)  (edited!)

There is already another thread on here at the moment about how small the margin on imported parts is, so how reasonable is it to look for much in the way of sponsorship from specialist suppliers? [I\'m ready to call Japan but who do I ring - any contacts?]

Yes, there are big corporates who play the sponsorship game in the UK but
1.Things aren\'t looking that good for UK Ltd at the moment so speculative sponsorship is tough to find - there would need to be a direct link between cost and benefit.
2. Getting to a decision maker is incredibly difficult the bigger the organisation gets. (Shell Motorsport last year - only slightly off the script of "Computer says No" because we could not get past Jenita - an attractively named lady Rottweiler allegedly \'in charge\' of sponsorship)
3. Items 1 and 2 do not mean thinking small. It is sometimes easier to raise a big number than a little one.

BUT, the important question we need to be asking ourselves is - What can MRC/Rotorstock deliver to a sponsor? This is not just a question of finding someone with a few bob - they, quite rightly, want something back. The Australian car was ready to come bare - to be wrapped in any livery on arrival - but its clear we don\'t represent value-for-sponsor-money at that level for one car. (Perversely, 9k would not get a sponsor 2 races on a second string touring car here)

Sponsorship is not just about having a winning car, be it 7, 9 or 10 seconds. It is only about adding value in some way for the sponsor. Sometimes that is as easy as free track passes for their customers and a bit of corporate entertaining at the circuit but 20B Boy\'s pithy descripton of the two main UK drag strips makes that one an uphill struggle :) (On the plus side for us there is a very nice man at Exedy who thinks SCR is lovely but SP is not fit to p*** in!)

Notwithstanding some of the above, lots of successful sponsorship deals come out of personal networks rather than business connections or hard headed bargaining. So who, as a group, do we know, drink with, work with, play golf with etc etc?   \'Oldone\' - or indeed anyone - with any specific ideas on who to call or talk to about raising sponsorship funding for Rotorstock please mail me (andrew@mazdarotaryclub.com) - even if it is just to pass the ball.

Going now - time for my medication.

That is \'disappointing\'
The only idea i can think of (and its a very long shot) is try \'Duckhams\' oils and remind them that the last time they sponsored Rotary Motorsport they won the 1994 British \'Superbike\' Championship and got loads of TV exposure. If they still have the same Marketing Director he just might go all misty eyed and get the cheque book out.... and then i woke up  :2Rolleyes

It has been mentioned today to me about "Fosters" sponsoring the whole event, lock stock n barrel.

With our fortunate and wonderful MRC Aussie connections this may be a way of stumping up a lot of money to bring over a lot of Aussie Jap cars that are both drift n drag, so do we have anyone in the house with any Foster connections, mind you I do know a company that couldn\'t give a XXXX about Fosters so maybe we can have a pop at them as well ???????????????????

Also does anyone know the where abouts of one David Leslie who is the ex Mazda Touring car / Lemans racing driver who from memory apparently has a 787B sitting in his garage that maybe in London???.

I presume this would be the White and Blue 2nd 787B and not the Renown car that David himself drove, if we don\'t ask we won\'t get will we.

I do like the idea of seeing this car run at RSIII but,     it has been touched upon,  cars on tracks here dont seem to run as well as they do in the USA, AUS or OZ, i\'m sure someone knows why.......    Would be a shame to get them over and they only manage high 8\'s cos the track is not upto it, especially for the sponser......

The other problem would be that it isnt road legal (i assume) so it wouldnt be able to compete.......   couple that with the fact that we may well have an 8 second evo, or skybus, it could be really embarassing if it lost....

i would love to have snoop around it though.......

Hi all,

Almost all of the Drag Cars in Australia now are built based on the Sport Compact Drag Racing rules.

The RX-7 in Question is a Pro RWD car.  Class Regulations here:

PRO REAR WHEEL DRIVE â€" HEADS UP - CLASS REGULATIONS

Class Designations: PRO/R followed by driver’s competition number.

Designed for purpose-built, Pro Stock style sedans/coupes or derivatives with minimal rules restrictions. Full tube chassis and racing slick tyres permitted.

Minimum Weights:

4-cylinders smaller than 3.0 litre (any power adders): 1,900 pounds/ 863kgs

2-rotor (any power adders): 1,900 pounds/ 863kgs

3-rotor (any power adders): 2,100 pounds/ 954kgs.

Any 6-cylinder, or 4-cylinder 3.0 litre or larger (one power adder): 2,350 pounds/ 1068kgs

Any 6-cylinder, or 4-cylinder 3.0 litre or larger (two power adders): 2,450 pounds/ 1113kgs

More rules and details here: http://www.andra.com.au/technical/SCREGS0405W.htm

The car would pretty much be for Demonstration anyways.  Top Fuel cars here run very good numbers on the tracks available - if they can get the power down (obviously on a prepared track) then the RX-7 will be able to also.

AGAIN!!!!!!!! This probably won\'t happen of course, but I\'m really glad it has everyone thinking about it :)

I will race anything on the day,i dont have a problem with this car if it comes over to the UK.

But i think that everyone else will, rotorstock is looking to get bigger and better every year.
But as soon as you let full drag cars with tubbed rear ends enter :Nono!
that will stop people coming to this top event.

I dont want this event going back to what the first rotorstock event was like.

RS is first and foremost meant to be focussed around ROTORS, and \'most\' of those attending the last 2 years have been rotary-orientated or owners. So any thing rotary-based thats going to give value to us lot watching is good in my books. And frankly considering the membership numbers these days I reckon we wouldnt be too far off making it Rotor-only a la a Sevenstock-type event :Thumbsup! Frankly with all the \'big boys\' from the piston fraternity that have let us down on attending over the last couple of years i really hope this happens soon. Dont get me wrong, the guys like yourself and Adrian who have given your support are complete gents and will always b welcome - shame some of the others in the JapShow pro class appear to have their heads so far up their own arses!

As for tubbs, its a natural progression - if you build RWD cars esp. All the 4WD crew I\'m sure will be more than happy to have them outlawed for eternity whilst it gives them a massive advantage in the 60 ft. Makes me laugh when you have Evos and Skylines that have had \'000s spent on them and that are never used on the road, that have been cut in half and put back together etc etc masquerading as street legal blah blah and then people spit the dummy about RWD guys trying to level things by doing what they can to get a bit of traction :D

I think Calder have the right idea with a 9" and a 4 link r/end, with mini tubs I assume, may be just stratched original tin? Alternatively, all the 4WD people run with all power to the rear end - then we can all play on the same playing field and no one need chop any thing :)

Couple of years ago no one ran any thing but normal street rubber. Now they run drag slicks of some sort. Things progress, its inevitable.

Anyway, lets hope a few more of the Rotors put up a bit better show next year whatever the rulings are and whomever is running...

Yay, rant over :D Happy xmas Keith.

Hi Keith
I agree, if a car like this which didnt conform to the rules ran at Rotorstock III it should be as a demo not as a competition entry (just like the jet cars).
Of course, the rules might be changed in years to come... or not.
\'what the first rotorstock event was like\'... sorry, i\'m being a bit dim... what do you mean?

I thought that the paying public was not very happy, that there was not many
of the invited cars running at Rotorstock 1.
Clive got a lot of stick about the event on the day and after the event
on most of the car forums, shame as it was not his fault that the cars did not turn up.

Most of the people said that they would never go back there, because of the above
but now with the success from this year it will move forward big time.

I think if tubbed drag cars are allowed to run it will ruin the event, this is the one
rule that is not allowed at TOTB,the organizers there know if they were to let a
tubbed car enter that would be there big downfall.

Also the land owners need as much people through the gate to make these
Rotorstock events pay

This is only my opinion so don\'t read into it to much.

theres nothing ilegal about a tubbed car, if its road legal and MOT\'able it should be able to run. This road legal thing won\'t last long anyway ... a lot of the top cars are nowhere near legal at the moment anyway ! ;)

Dont think any one here wouldve said that - but as you say you cant blame MRC for the fact that the invited cars let us down at the nth hour. I\'d like to think MRCs membership and vendor support is getting close to being able to afford to stage RS without reliance upon other marques and thus edging closer to acheiving what was set out i.e. a european sevenstock-type event (I tihnk/assume?).

Quote from: os gikenI think if tubbed drag cars are allowed to run it will ruin the event, this is the one rule that is not allowed at TOTB,the organizers there know if they were to let a tubbed car enter that would be there big downfall.
3/4 of the tubbed rotaries in the world are probably more legitimately road legal than 1/2 of the Pro pits at JapShow for e.g. Theres a big difference between a mini tubbed coupe and a full chassis monster though admittedly. As for TOTB - who cares - its a jack of all trades event run to the detriment of any thing thats not 4WD; the drag section is on rough concrete upon which ohh, 4wd\'s have an even bigger than normal advantage - and RWD and FWD arent allowed to run a decent tyre as an equaliser - which would actually make the event more than a 3 horse (4wd of course!) race. The handling track section also largely favours 4wd or has done from the years i\'ve been and the feedback i\'ve heard from those competitors I know.

Quote from: os gikenAlso the land owners need as much people through the gate to make these

I\'d rather see it subsidised and more in our control, as un/realistic as this may be on paper I dont know. However, give SCR their dues anyway; the guys that run the track at the non-pro events really know their stuff and seem to have a far greater appreciation of the cars than the muppets at Pod - they are used to RWD and bother to prep the track properly for them - pod shouldve been done for safety at JapShow Finale as it was nothing short of dangerous for the RWD boys - all for the sake of keeping the plebs in the (largely non-Jap!) chav-mobiles happy on the RWYB all day... Some how SCR never seems that busy and that que\'s are never unbearable STUPID like Pod - but yet they must still see the RWYB days as finiacially viable.

I dont know who decides upon the rules for RS - are they governed by others or does the club decide?

Quote from: os gikenThis is only my opinion so don\'t read into it to much.

Hi Keith, all, just as a point of discussion,  i seem to remember Ronnie put an all singing/dancing gearbox in his Skyline,  this obviously gives more traction, there isnt that much difference in putting a different rear axle in a RWD to give more traction,  and if that means modding the arches to fit the tyres under (road legal of course) is there really a lot of difference.  Obviously if its a full fabricated chassis its different than just a tubbed read end.

either way, i just want to see as many fast cars there as possible, at the end of the day, there will always be rules and people will always have differences of opinion,  but thats what makes things interesting.

WE DECIDE ON THE RULES!!!(As a club representation) It was a tad difficult to get the F1 and F2 classes implimented for RSII, as the main organisers in the club didn\'t Appreciate the benifits. As the rules state, the car needs to be road legal, with drag rubber for F1(Pro) and road legal tyres for F2(street/RWYB)
BTW, is the Red Calibra that frequents Santa Pod not Semi Tubbed and road legal??

Theres also some thing in the rules about \'drag\' cars isnt their? does this exclude cars with had non standard rear axles? what about modified wheel arches? And if u want to get picky - what about wide-arched cars that are thus able to run a wider rim/tyre combo? is one excluded and the other not?

Quote from: 93type-xBTW, is the Red Calibra that frequents Santa Pod not Semi Tubbed and road legal??
I would have assumed it would be full tubbs and full chassis as its runs 7s or some thing? That just highlights the ludicrousy of saying the F1 cars msut remain road legal...whats that mean!!?!

Hi All, I hope you had a good Christmas.

I have read this thread with interest and have decided to clear a few things up !!.

A few of you may know this but I have had some experience of Drag Racing and raced for one complete season winning The Southern Drag Drivers Championship ( best bit was Stirling Moss presented me with a silver cup at the end of year ceremony for it), anyway I have told you this so you know I know a little about Drag Racing ( I did say a little before you jump on me) and have kept ties with the sport loosely since.

I devised the Rules initially myself after discussions with Lee the tracks promoter, with my biggest stipulation being that whilst the rules needed to be as simple as possible they could be subject to "any" alteration if the need arose, if you read below you will also see that I do indeed appreciate the difference between a pure Race Car, a F1 car and an F2 car and that we totally reserve the right to exclude either a Race car or a car competing in the wrong class !.

Keith is right the first year was an unmitigated disaster due to myself getting it wrong after believing all those so called "superstars !" out there who told me down the phone they would be there after I spent a lot of time on the phone explaining that for once they would really be racing on the lights properly and there would be none of this mamby pamby "O look the lights have changed, think I will go when I am ready" at Rotorstock and didn\'t nessaceraly need the fastest car there to win !

I can only figure that a lot of these guys were scared of "real racing" at that time as most had never been in a proper Drag Elimination competition in there lives, (other than Ron Kiddell that is) and didn\'t appreciate that the quickest car does not always win when Drag Racing proper takes place and we witnessed that this year with Adrian having had a very good chance of beating Keith in the main Final.

Both Lee and Martin Vincent ( Ed of Jap Performance) warned me that "invites" were a crazy idea, and it came to pass that they were right and I was wrong as I honestly believed these guys would turn up !!

Whatever, we should all be proud that MRC staged the first ever proper American style "import Drag Racing"  for Japanese cars only in Europe.

As Keith knows, for 2005 I took the stance that with Rotorstock being the only Championship on offer for these cars, " if you think you have a car quick enough to compete and the balls to race properly", "BE THERE" which is a philosophy that will be applied to next years Rotorstock 3

The biggest change you will see for Rotorstock 3 will be more emphasis placed on Front wheel drive cars as these by far make up the bulk of the cars running at Rotorstock, meaning we will ensure they have their own competition within the Rotorstock competition.

BTW, All this talk of a 7 second Race Car possably coming to Rotorstock 3 has been totally lost and misconstrued along the way, i.e.  IF the car came it would only be billed as an attraction doing demo  runs at Rotorstock, because the rules quite clearly exclude this type of car anyway.

HERE ARE THE RULES for The Japanese Street Fighter Championships

Japanese Street Fighter Championships (JSFC) 2005

The following are the competition rules for the JSFC.  The potential to qualify for this is open to all drivers who have signed on to take part in the RWYB sessions.  No other registration will be required.

JSFC - Rules

a) The Japanese Street Fighter Championship is for ROAD DRIVEN CARS, Japanese Cars with Japanese engines ONLY.

b) Competition will be split into two classes,

F1 will be for \'proven road cars\' .  These cars will be taxed + MOTed but will be free to run Drag tyres, but must remain in the \'\'spirit of the rules\'\' i.e. no out and out pure Drag race cars.

F2 will be for \'\'proper driven to the track normal fully fledged road cars only\'\'. Running on full conventional tubeless street tyres, ( no Drag cheat tyres, such as BF Goodrich, MT, Hoosiers etc. This will be an equaliser as it will not matter how much power you have because the grip will not be there to use it.)

c) F1 or F2 will be painted on the cars windows in white at scrutineering so spectators know what class a car is running in.  In addition for F2 FWD/RWD/4WD classifications will also be displayed.

d) The car class is to be declared when scrutineering/signing on so the onus is on the driver to declare his chosen class.

e) These cars will be checked in the fire-up lane on a regular basis, and any driver found with the wrong tyres in F2 will be excluded from the meeting.

f) Both classes will run on pump fuel but additives are allowed, i.e. NO METHONOL etc.

 g) Please note the decision as to whether a car is eligible to compete in either class will be taken by MRC. THIS MAY HAPPEN BEFORE, DURING OR AFTER THE MEETING AND THE CLUBS DECISION WILL BE FINAL.

Hi Clive,
Perhaps there needs to be an out and out class now for Japanese cars that do not have to be road legal?Say an F0 for "F open" class?
ie: they might be almost completely open in that they must have Japanese engines and resemble a Japanese car (Or even include all far eastern cars such as Korean,Malaysian, and others) but tubbed and extremely modded can compete against one another?
It might push the boundaries even further over here for the really serious cars.
Some of the so called F1 cars are not really road legal anyway, not in anything but name anyway.I can\'t see alot of them passing a true MOT.
Before anyone say\'s that there are not enough cars to compete,we need to start somewhere,it is no good waiting until there are enough cars to compete because no one will be inclined to build a car for the event if it has nothing to compete in.

What does everyone think??

Regards
Carl

As I have mentioned in the past, I would like to see the rules and regs. go down the more professional route of Sport Compact, like in the States, Oz, NZ, etc.

The Rules and Regs. are and will be a huge issue for everybody.  Something does need to be put in place - perhaps 2007, 2008.

I personally can\'t believe that there are almost NO safety rules for Drag Racing in the UK.  Even Lee (SCR Track Director) has said that if there were any huge accidents that he would be extremely concerned about his future doing what he is doing (if these rules and regs are put in place, then he would have a lot less to worry about - at least he has done the most he can).  This is motor racing, there are rules and safety regs. in place for a reason in the US, Oz, NZ, etc..  Cars are now tech. inspected before they can run, licence passes need to be obtained, tail shaft loops are standard (rear wheel drive), roll cages are standard for cars running under 11.99 second passes (I think it is 11.99). And much more.

To me it appears to be a free for all type thing that is really scary when you think about it.  I myself would rather be sitting in a car to go down the strip that comply\'s with at least the minimum safety requirements.

This is a WHOLE new area of course, it needs to be explored sooner rather than later.

As for the classes, again - I think the UK should follow the world standards to make all the classes more even, so there really is something in it for everyone.  It doesn\'t matter if your car isn\'t the fastest in the UK, it matters more for your car to be fastest in its class (on a level playing field).

These rules and regs. have been drawn up over time, and are in place now around most of the world.  The UK should follow suit - even if it is just for the safety issues.  Then the Class issues should be looked at and introduced (again slowly but surely).  Why make up a whole new set if they exist already? not only would you be on the same level playing field as the rest of the world, but it would really be a true indication of how the cars are running against the rest of the world. To eventually set-up world Titles, etc. etc.

I personally can\'t wait to see proper tubbed rotor\'s running down the strip! :)

The issue of being Road Legal won\'t be an issue if Class Rules and Regs. are put in place - that is my feeling.  For example: the issue of being Road Legal in Australia is not really brought up anymore - but it was certainly an issue a few years ago.

Glenn, what you have said must be the logical progression of RS. Safety will no doubt pick up, but the class system needs to be implemented asap. A good show with prizes awarded to more classes/people makes the the following show bigger. Fact.
Added to that...Surely RSIII would be an opportune time to introduce a Pro class.

Now it\'s just another Japshow/meet like all the rest out there...
What makes it different? What makes this something to do with the Rotary?...

I very much agree that RS should be ROTORSTOCK Dom, if the club has any cash spare then I would def vote to throw it at gaining as much control as poss over how future RS\' operate. Though I assume there is still a (financial) viability issue if it is not sold as another jap meet to get the numbers in?? RS should be Rotor-only if poss like 7stock -which i assume was the original vision? We may have to be patient as to when that happens I guess.

I dont think the \'rotary content\'-issue should effect changes in categorys tho; we should encourage rotors to go as quick as poss by whatever means surely? that doesnt have to be at the cost of others jsut having fun still...

I like Nortons post about RX-8 Owners. Is there any special incentive for them?  How about a prize or at least a Certificate for the quickest RX-8.

On the contrary, judging by how few RX-8s wave back when I am in the FD ( or the 2) I am not sure they are even Rotary enthusiasts.

But then again, they have a large club and we NEED to be involving them somehow?

Hi Martin,

Whilst I do agree with sentiments and have no problem with an RX-8 cup being awarded for the quickest 8 down the strip.

I would like to tell you that the RX-8 owners club was invited to attend but Rotorstock was totaly dismised on their forum as just a silly "Max Power type event" and so there was no interest to attend.
Hopefully 2006 will be different if we can educate them that this is a meeting for all, whatever your taste :cheers .
Title: Possibility of a 7 second RX-7 to come from Oz for ROTORSTOCK 3!

Hi All,

First of all I do agree that all cars with something near a 100mph terminal should at least have a driver with a crash helmet on at least !.

In 2004 we had the stipulation that ALL drivers in any car had to use crash helmets but like a lot of things this did cause problems with the main one being a severe lack of helmets available, even though Lee (JAP4RX) kindly donated some old crash helmets to the meeting the result still was that all day we had people asking us for crash helmets and even people like Ross had turned up with out a helmet expecting to compete with fast cars!,our biggest problem was that Santa Pod lets cars run without crash helmets and they had never had to bother before.

Also lets not get carried away here as something like 75% to 80% of the cars are only doing 15 seconds down the strip and we probably only had 4 or 5 cars capable of 11 second quarters anyway !, yes I know it only takes one accident to hurt you but I would hope that if someone builds ten second Japanese car that they will at the very least want to wear a crash helmet and fit some safety equipment as well.

As regards classes look in the rules and you will see we cater for differing classes already with F1, F2, and then classes for front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and four wheel drive and if all are in agreement after reading this I propose a separate class, with this maybe being called "S class" which will allow cars to compete against each other that do not comply with the rules as already stated.

I believe "S Class" should cater for Japanese  engined cars competing against each other these would be cars that are full blown Race cars, on methanol or specials which would mean even kit cars with jap engines would have a home as well.

Just incase people have forgotten The Japanese Street Fighter Championships were devised for Japanese Street cars and not out and out tube frame Race Cars.

BTW, I will leave it up to all you guys to decide if fully tubbed cars are able to fit into the F1 street class even if they have tax n test.

The idea of fully mapped out classes is obviously a good one because we would "comply" with the rest of the world with both car spec and safety, however we must decide if we are going to just run a one off meeting once a year or is MRC to now to become fully involved in the implementation of Drag Racing in Britain for Japanese cars.

Whilst It is admirable if we take on organising Drag Racing in Britain for Japanese cars we also have to take into account Santa Pod who have a totally different agenda to us in that they have been holding private meetings with most of the quicker runners on the Jap scene for some two years devising rules for these cars and yet not once has anyone from MRC had an invite to these meetings.

This means that any rules or regs that we may or may not try to implement will only apply to the one track anyway and possibly for only one meeting a year!

Lastly to answer the  question of Rotary\'s at Rotorstock, we need everyone to face the fact that we do not have anywhere near enough Rotary\'s to expect any track to even consider financially a Rotary only meeting because we simply do not have enough cars to hold a Rotorstock style meeting without the support of the rest of the Japanese community.

The way I see it is we have Rotary\'s and Mazda showcased at Rotorstock and am pleased to say that Rotary\'s have been at the forefront of Rotorstock for the past two years and that Rotorstock has considerably aided the rapid development of Rotary\'s on the Drag strip purely because people have had the goal of competing in the meeting that MRC devised.

Quote from: cliveHERE ARE THE RULES for The Japanese Street Fighter Championships

Hi Era,

Above are the rules and I beleive it would be better if you decided what class you would like your car to compete in  :WaveBye

Are you going to run EFI Era? I assume not, very interested either way. What shot of gas do you plan to run, and how are you plumbing it in? you have a progressive controlller? we have run a number of different jet sizes on my red car to date with interesting results, theres a lot of scope for playing about :) Be interesting to see how the n/a and turbo graphs compare bro and how much it bumps the lil ones ponies! :D

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Hi All,
2 pence worth from someone with no motorsports experience whatsoever, but regarding sorting out classes for RS3 or 4 or 5 or whenever, I think someone who knows their stuff (one of the oz,nz knowledgeable guys, glenn, clive etc) should bit the bullet and lay down a set of classes as close to whatever international standards are already in place.
You\'ll never get everyone to agree with it, you can\'t set rules via a public discussion cos if everyone agreed then you wouldn\'t need the rules in the first place! lol

There is no reason why rotorstock shouldnt grow and attract interest in rotary drag racing in the uk over the next few years, i\'m sure there is a hell of a lot to come out of the renesis engine in the future and other countries don\'t have 10yrs+ headstart on us with that engine, so we should try to keep our rules as close to other countries as possible to encourage expansion in the future.

Maybe there will be a time when a 7 second rotor will ask to come to england to be allowed to compete against our cars! why not?

Safety is important as always and the experienced drag scenes around the world have tried and tested rules and regs that work, why go into the headache of making up your own?

Whatever happens, I\'m just an amateur petrol head who wants to see big loud fast cars bwap their way up the strip at rs3, so I don\'t have a preference but looking to the future and lining up with the rest of the world seems like a smart move.

:):):):)
