Title: URGENT spoiler question
Post by: james01uk on December 12, 2005, 09:46:55 AM
does removing the rear spoiler on a FD cause handling issues.

i have to decide now as it is going to be taken off right now if it will be ok.

i will be using the car for track days and would like to know if this will cause handling problems at all  and if anyone already has de-spoilered their car and what its like.

thanks

You car only has a stock spoiler dosn\'t it? i can\'t imagine the stock wing does a massive amount.

I\'ve got no rear spoiler and can report that there are no handling issues at all even at highly illegal speeds.  The standard spoiler is just cosmetic anyway and doesn\'t do much, you\'ll probarbly have a slightly higher top end without it.

The early stock spoiler has no aerodynamic properties at all, the 99 spec one however does.

As a few have said if you had the stock rear spoiler anyhow then removing it wont make a massive difference chap  :Thumbs-up

Ok, can you please elaborate on this?

The stock spoiler is mostly aesthetic, but I would have thought the aftermarket ones are also only that.

I\'ve got the details somewhere (this was discussed on FDUk a while back) of the drag produced by stock spoiler (the low one that came fitted cars  made before 99) and it produces no downforce, the spoiler fitted to 99spec cars (the taller one) produces some downforce.

I can\'t remember the figures exactly, but my dad also had a look at this out of curiosity and his opinion was that there is no aerodynamica point in the original spoiler, he has a degree in aeronatical engineering and ran windtunnels for 30 years including running the tunnel used on the benneton F1 team.

I will try find the aerodynamic details for you soon but right now I struggling with a tricky suspension bush :Tongue1 .

Cheers

Oh and I can\'t comment on the aftermarket spoilers, I\'ve never seen the details on any of them but I belive that c-west and mazdaspeed parts have been windtunnel tested.
