I did a quick search and didn\'t find what I was looking for, I\'m wondering if anyone has ever attempted to do an engine conversion on the FD?
I might possibly be buying a FD soon and was curious if you could change it for something like a 1JZGTE out of the soarer? just a project I\'m think of.
Thanks
Tom.
No point. The 13B twin turbo puts out more power then 1JZGTE as standard, plus the 1JZGTE is heavier and taller engine as well a lot of fabrication is needed to make it fit.
A US company fitted a a 2JZ engine, but it handled like a bag of sh**, went well in a straight line though, but very dodgy on corners.
The only engine conversion worthwhile and that has been done many times on a FD is a V8 or Triple rotor conversion.
I\'ve seen a FC with a 6 cyl Honda Vtec, same idea whould work with the FD. Also Lexus V8\'s go nicely in the FD or a 20B (obvious choice :Hammer)
Again why would anyone wanna put a V6 vtec in a FD when that unit is heavier and not as powerfull with no scope for extra power!!!??? :Hammer
At least with a V8 or a Rotary turbo engine you have scope to make large amounts of power in a compact package. New lightweight V8s are quite short like the Rotary. Those Toyota and Honda 6 cylinder lumps are HEAVY
You don\'t know much about nsx engine do you :rollin
Here\'s the FC I was talking about.

Oh wow it produces 320 in top 3.2 guise wooppy f**king do!!!! , then shove another 10 to 20 grand to get 400BHP, and then if your pockets are really deep you can get it 500 plus GTC spec.
ahh whats this shove 6 grand at Chevy small block and get 500 to 600 bhp or shove 7 grand at the 13B turbo and get 500bhp.
cmon you have to agree the vtec v6 is to damn expensive to mod
So I still have to say whats the POINT of a Vtec V6 in an FD????
I think it\'s running an S2000 engine which in standard N/A form has more bhp than an FD so it\'s a good choice if you want to go quicker and want something different (which is what this post is about).
Supercharger kits are readily available for sod all as well. :Hammer

Wrong Again Mr Mullins, back to school for you, the s2000 produces 240bhp the FD is 255Bhp. plus the F22C has less torque then the 13BREW, the 13BREW also produces a lot of torque low down the rev range then the F22C. Also the s2000 engine is still heavier and longer then the 13B.
Again whats the point of putting a Honda engine in a FD!!! even with supercharger kits you cant get anywhere near the power pontential of a 13B or Chevy V8??!!!
For much less than what the conversion and tuning would cost on the S2000 engine, you may as well just fit a decent single turbo to a healthy 13B. More power, unmolested handling and ultimately a quicker car.
There\'s a helluva lot to be said for using all the things available for tuning an RX-7. When you\'ve got a huge amount of choice, why go creating something that will take a lot of work to get right and still not be as good as other stuff available?
A13B has huge potential in the RX-7 and fits it like a glove. No need to change :D :D.
Sorry Mullins I could not help this attachment hahaha me being childish lol :cheers
I too cannot see the point in transferring a different, and less flexible engine into the FD. It was designed with the 13B in mind, and has almost perfect weight distribution with that engine. Any different engine is going to upset the handling dramatically, the the 13B has plenty of scope for tunability.
Okay Blitzboy you win. I can\'t be bothered arguing over a few bhp when youre comparing an N/A engine with a twin turbo. The guy was asking for engine conversions so that\'s what I was giving him. I\'ll just go back to my cave and post no more.
ah Mullins dont be upset , its only friendly banter. :Thumbs-up
But I had to compare the turbo engine to the vtec you were suggesting as the FD only came with a Twin turbo engine in the first place.
My only suggestion for engine conversion would be a chevy small block, NA versions can produce up to 600 bhp, with some Americans adding turbos and getting nigh on reliable 1000 bhp
woo opinionated discussion!
I have a 13b engine (rebuilt) if this guy wants to do the simplest engine conversion going - swap a 13b for a different 13b!
:):):):):):):)
Ok cool thanks for the opinions, the idea was just to have something that didn\'t need require rebuilds and would be more reliable, I thought it probably would upset the handling so probably give it a miss, maybe it would be worth my while buying a single turbo\'d rex straight away.
yes defo the way to go ,buy a single turbo modified FD straight away, there are few for sale on this forum. You will save quite a bit of money as the conversion has been done already.
This one is still for sale, and is a verrry good example of the whole car been done properly with a fresh engine and a LOT of power!!!

tdraper email me at bearnigel@yahoo.com
Don\'t be put off doing a conversion if that is really what you would like to do.
On the other hand don\'t write off the idea of a rotary powered model though either, they are reliable if properly setup and maintained, and actually not all that expensive to rebuild if they need it.(Compared to piston engines of similar power)
Either way get one and build it into the car you really want, with the engine you really want,it is not as if they are all that rare.

Carl
A mate e-mailed me a pic of an FD with a Nissan SR20 in it (200SX engine). I\'ll post the pic when I get home.
Anything other than a Rotary under the bonnet of RX is blasphemy for me though ;)

Here\'s an RX-3 with an SR20DET conversion. Same idea - would fit nicely in a FD. This car competes in the NZ targa rally. There is a Datsun bodied drag car in NZ that runs 8\'s with an SR20DET so the potential is there!

mullins now thats awesome...i take it thats not in this country with rb25det...
Arse, I must have deleted the pic :(

no, found that one on ausrotary.com :Typing
That series 4 with the rb25det looks interesting. I wonder how it goes around corners as there seems to be a fair bit of engine in front of the strut towers, and there will also be a radiator and probably an intersooler too. Mind you it does look(from the one photo to be a good fit)
If the rotary was definately out of the picking then a toyota V8 would be my first choice as they are over engineered to buggery and there are loads of tuning kit out there for them these days.
I think that this thread does possibly highlight the fear in a lot of new owners, or wanna be owners heads that rotaries dont last. Hence then need for piston reliability.
just my 2 pence worth.
I like the strut brace on the 3 though.
