Title: Smoky Rex
Post by: Adriansturgess on December 08, 2005, 11:57:43 AM
My FD chucks a lot of smoke (water vapour?) out the back at start up. This continues for a good couple of minutes then the visible smoke/vapour disappears. My exhaust is angled down a bit and I get a large wet patch on the drive during this period so I guess it must be chucking a lot of water vapour out. This wet patch does dry out but there are visible oil streaks in it too sometimes. There is quite a smell of oil but not like burnt oil, actually like oil smells straight out of the can. The car does use quite a bit of oil as I have to regularly top it up. I quite recently had it compression tested and the figures were all around 7.5 so the apex seals would appear to be fine (the engine was rebuilt less than 20,000 miles ago. The car is fairly stock, other than an aftermarket air intake and performance seems fine. I recently got the car MoT\'d and it saled through the emmision tests - almost no measurable emmisions (but the equipment obviously isn\'t interested in oil emmisions - just how efficiently the petrol is burnt).

Has anybody got any advice on what my options are? Is it likely to continue to get worse? How expensive to strip down and sort the problem out at this stage?

I can continue to live with the car as it is but is this a sensible approach?

Is it only smoking when cold? if so I wouldn\'t think its anything to worry about. Remember that the OMP injects oil into the rotor housing to lubricate everything in there. If you get smoking under load or after sitting in stationary traffic for a while then its possible that your turbos are blown. Hope that helps.

Hi,

Yes it only happens when cold - I don\'t think there\'s a problem with the turbo\'s (at least I hope not!).
