i have a mazda rx7 type r. (efini) 1992
on the log book it just says "mazda Rx7" engine 1.3
now companies keep picking this up as 2354 engine and after much reading i think it should be picked up as a 2.6 is that correct? (which is obviously alot more money)
so i dont want to insure the wrong type of car so i keep telling them 2.6 is this now correct?
as its bringing up the premiums to like double and now norwich union wont even insured the 2.6 so ive lost my half decent quote with them and best ive got is with admiral at £1456 with 2 years ncb, driving 4 years, no crashes at 21
insuring as a 2.6 is correct.
Rob.
Thats a good quote, I\'m paying similar money, same age but with admiral/bell
scratch that, admiral are saying £3000 (with 2.6). i got one with firebond for £1900 , bell are offering £2900 on the 2.6
what the hell is going on ..
before i bought the car i didnt know much about it and was just asking for type r and they obviously kept putting down 2354, i was getting quotes from 750-£1500
now the cheapest im getting is £1900 but all you guys seem to be getting alot lower quotes what the hell is going on .
Have you tried elephant?
elephant = £3000 for the 2.6 model
Ouch.. I would buy a hatch for a couple of years if I was you mate.
Quote from: robedwards99Ouch.. I would buy a hatch for a couple of years if I was you mate.
been there did that for 4 years (3 or 4 hatches) now still keeping one but wanted something different so got quotes all looked okay.
previous owner said t was listed as 2354 so thought yeah ok.
got decent quote, bought the car, now i find out and get ****ed :(
try A-plan mate or Adrian Flux. They should both be nearer to the original quotes you got.
Adrian Flux wanted £2300 from me :D ....I went elsewhere!!
For an FD the correct engine size is 2.6 the 2.3 is for an FC, 1.3 is the Jap size for an FD [basicly there was an agreement with the DVLA and Mazda that the FD should be 2.6 in this country although its displacement is 1.3]
HTH, or confuses
There\'s a reason insurance companies pick the car up (incorrectly) as 2354cc and provide incorrect quotes:
All the major car insurance companies use a single source for their base car specification list (I\'m guessing it\'s DVLA sourced but don\'t know for sure). In this list, the \'RX7 TYPE R\' is quoted as 2354cc, group 20 and no year of manufacturer is provided. The same is true of the type RB and RS.
There is only one RX7 listed as 2616cc and it has no insurance group, it is therefore up to the individual companies to assign an insurance group.. and don\'t go thinking they stop at 20..
I\'ll try and find out where the list originates as it would be a very good idea to get it changed.

pain in the back side, obviously 90% of people saying that have these £1000 policies are just paying for a 2.3 as thats what the insurance companies list. but now im getting stung big time because im honest and spen all this time querying and researching which has ended up tripling my premiums ;(. £1980 for a years car insurance? this is just unreal.
will try a-plan ive done their request form, i tried flux before and they were talking of 3k and that was with the normal 2354 as back then i didnt realise there was a 2.6 ;(
what do you guys suggest, i mean where do i stand if i was to insure it as what the insurance companies are picking it up as? like everyone else seems to be doing..
my log book just says rx-7 and 1300c capacity. if i crash would they even know it was 2.6 and not a 2354?
Quote from: anthonymy log book just says rx-7 and 1300c capacity. if i crash would they even know it was 2.6 and not a 2354?
Depends if the insurance guy or who-ever inspected your car know\'s the difference between an FC and an FD i guess..
Depends. If you claim on yourself youll send them the log book and they see the discrepancy.
When I had one registered as 1.3 I got the insurance company to put 1.3 on the form so everything matched up. Didnt make it any cheaper, just meant the broker understood what I was going on about lol.
The thing that bugs me is why is the RX7 Type R, RB & RS classed as a 2.3 with the insurance companies? Did they ever make an FC type R, RB or RS? if they didn\'t surley it\'s the databases fault? Not everyone knows engine sizes and is familiar with the mechanicals!!!!! My sister goes on styling and doesnt take note of the engine size when it comes to insurance. what they bring up is what she knows it as!
Example:
She drives an imported Mazda MPV running a Ford 2.5 V6 engine (2.5 on log book) and yet the insurance told her that the car never came with a 2.5 only a 2.0 4 cyl or a 2.3 V6!!!! What do you do?????
Jono
I don\'t think engine size makes the slightest difference with a rex the insurance guys are not stupid they are well aware of what they are and how fast they are.thats why many insurance comp wont touch it!
I called AON today spoke to a guy called Adam who new all about rx7 and managed to get a good price of £589 with all mods :cool
Yup it looks like the database is just plain wrong. I guess the additional entry for a RX7 with 2616cc and no year of manufacturer was put in place to cover this inacurracy.

this is exactly my point, my log book says 1.3, when i rung round all the insurance companies i said it was an rx7, they said is it a coupe i said yes, is it a twin turbo yes.. and then bang a quote..
its only later when i started ringing around i questioned what engine size it had actually listed on their quote and they all said 2354. so i presumed this was what it was meant to be but then stupidly i then did research in to what the correct size is meant to be (2616) and then re rang round all the the insurance companys and getting them to have to do serious buggering around to try and get it to select this engine size, as they are saying well it must be the wrong model? but im like no its not and then i end up with quote thats 3 times as much.
if i came in ignorant as i was before, i did nothing wrong as i said yes to all the correct options the model is all fine but it comes up as 2354? well thats wrong anyway compared to the log book that says 1.3 and all the insurance companies all say 2354 so why would i be any the wiser?? only because i spent time googling the different types and asking on here, which is now going to cost me 3 times as much..
from what other people are saying on here with their £1000 quotes being the same age as me 21. with 2 years ncb same as me and 4 years driving. except im being quoted £2000-£3000 for the correct model yet before i was getting quotes of £1000 with the default 2354?
im starting to wonder if im now wrong for saying its a 2.6 as most of the insurance companies cant even get it to list.
Quote from: anthonyfrom what other people are saying on here with their £1000 quotes being the same age as me 21.
If its any consulation, I paid just over £1000. I am 30, been driving for 12 years, a few oops\'s along the way, but just one accident that counts a couple of years ago. 3 years NCB.
A quick clarification for you guys :)
The FC was classed at 1.8x its swept volume for Tax and insurance (2354cc)
The FD was classed at 2.0x its swept volume for tax and insurance (2616cc IIRC)
One other thing, how come you have so little NCB if you\'ve been driving for 4 years?
try this one, Brentacre 01792650933, been using them for just under 4 years now and i pay just shy of £800 3years NCB, 3points, and am 23, but i do drive an FC, so might be a bit different
Patrick
At the end of the day the insurance companys have got it all wrong, the engine capacity is 1308cc. As Fro said they just look on standard databases and confuse the hell out of everybody, including them selves.
I posted Here (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20287) and Ray quoted that the FIA have used various calculations to define cc, current regs are; "3.2 Equivalence formula between reciprocating piston and rotary engines (of the type covered by the NSU Wankel patents)
The equivalent cubic capacity is equal to the volume determined by the difference between the maximum and minimum capacities of the combustion chamber." that equates to 4185cc :eek Lets hope they don\'t add that to the database.
If anyone\'s interested in looking at the insurance car specs table, I\'ve uploaded a copy (load it in excel) here:
http://www.zen44871.zen.co.uk/Misc/inslist.csv
these are my results, thought it might be interesting for people my age when looking round, saves you ringing place that people keep suggesting but you end up finding out you need to be 25
looks like its time to get a 2nd job as im going to paying £2k for a years insurance
this is for a 21 year old, 4 years driving, 2 years ncb (was on parents policy for 2 years as was too expensive for own policy)
best was firebond :
fire bond - 1986.15 fully comp (3rd party doesnt matter) 0870 444 0556
adrian flux = £2500-£3000
0800 458 6890 - hyperformance - £2750
admiral = £3500
Brentacre 01792 650 933 = no under 25s
heritage = 0121 2466065 no under 25s
Lifesure = 0870 366 1235 no under 25s
privilege = no under 25s
Hoddesdon Insurance Consultants 0845 121 2212 = no under 25s
Norwich union direct = dont insure 2.6 cars
egger lawson = 0115 941 5255 = never got cal back
elephant = £3000 - £1969 tpft
bell = £3000 - £1969 tpft
a-plan 0845 071 1234 no under 25s
alan and alan transfer first transfered me back to call connect and then when they retransfered me i waited a few minutes then it got cut off.
quote a - dont do 2.6s - on the 2.4 was coming up as £2500 anyway.
What I say is: if you give them the correct year of manufacture, model (Type R, R2......) twin turbo 2 door coupe, then you should be coverd and it\'s their fault their data base is screwd up, not ours!!! In this case I just pleaded ignarance and said its all standard 1993 twin turbo rx7........ fully comp: £520......... Thank you very much (oh my god I\'ve just insured an RX7!!)

whos that with ?
Interesting read, just shows what a mess the database is. The only insert for RX7 @ 2616cc is for an auto ins. group 200 :eek. UK spec is listed as 2354cc
I have cut RX section to make an easier read
Doh, can\'t upload a spread sheet
Kev,
Good spot.. I\'ve only just noticed there\'s no entry for a manual 2616cc rx7.. hmmm!
The INS_GROUP column is not part of the original table, it is added by the individual companies. In this case, they needed more accurate groupings so the group goes from zero to 240 (anything over 200 would be referred instantly to an underwriter). The original 1-20 insurance group is column AA (GROUP_OLD)
Cheers

i made errors!
Science paper coming up...
im sorry, but your all wrong! in a way anyway...haha.
our engines are two voids with a capacity of 654cc. That makes 1308cc, or a 1.3 litre. By design, a 4 piston engine car fires two of four cylinders in two full revoloutions of the crankshaft; i.e the crank has to turn four times to fire all four cylinders or to draw in the full capacity of the engine (eg 2.0 litres)
WIth a rotary engine, each combustion event lasts through 90 degrees of the rotors rotation, and because the eccentric shaft spins at 3 times the speed of the rotors, this is equal to 270 degrees of the shafts rotation. So in effect a single rotor engine produces power for three quarters of each revoloution of the output shaft. Compare this to a single piston engine where power is only provided for 180 degrees out of every TWO revoloutions of the crank shaft, or on average a quarter of every revoloution.
so with a rotary providing power through 3/4 of a revoloution, and a piston engine providing power through 1/4 of a revoloution, obviously the rotary is going to push out more power as not as much is wasted.
The shaft on a rotary engine has to spin 3 times for the engine to take in 1.3 litres of a/f mix. The crank on a 4 piston engine has to spin 4 times to take in 1.3 litres of air (if the pison engine is a 1.3)
So in effect, a rotary has 6 combustion cycles lasting through 270 degrees for every 3 turns of the shaft. A piston engine has 4 combustion cycles lasting through 180 degrees for every four revoloutions of the crank.
in every 12 turns of a rotary shaft, the rotors turn through all 6 faces (3 facesx2 rotors) 4 times, so you have 24 combustion cycles and power provided for 3240 degrees of the shafts movement out of a possible 4320
in every 12 turns of a piston crankshaft you have 12 combustion cycles providing power through 2160 degrees of rotation out of a possible 4320 degrees of the cranks movement
So a rotary engine provides power for 1.5 times the length of time a piston engine does. There is also a 90 degree overlap of each rotor (i.e rotor 1 face 1 is providing power 90 degrees before rotor 2 face 1 finishes providing its 270 degrees of power) This means that a twin rotor rotary engine provides power for a full 360 degree\'s of rotation; as opposed to a piston engines 180 degrees of power.
This is why the rotary engine is classed as a 2.6 litre, because it provides power for twice as long as a piston engine per revoloution. There is no other reason for this...
In reality, you cannot look at it like this - due to the fact that there is not enough fuel intake to last a full combustion cycle, and also that there is a lot of power loss to heat and friction in a rotary.
It was agreed in motorsport that the 13b would be classed as a 2354cc engine, as it clearly could not be classed as a 1.3 and it simply ISNT a 2.6 engine. Calculations were done on losses and in the end, it was agreed on a 2354.
Since the rotary started its life as a motorsport development engine, this rule has stuck - and insurance companies have taken it on too.
The rotary engine is simply TOO different to analyse and calculate its size in comparison to a piston engine. There are too many unmeasureables and uncalculables.
In short, the rotary engine has a capacity of 1308cc, NO MORE, NO LESS. Anyone who says its a 2.6, or a 2354cc is simply wrong. The only reason it is considered to be a 2.6 is because it provides power throughout 360 degrees as opposed to 180, and the reason it is said to be a 2354 is because this is what it is classed as in motorsport.
ALthough neither theories are strictly wrong in their workings, as i say - the rotary is a 1308cc engine and always will be. It still draws in on average the same as a piston engine. 3 revoloutions of the crank draw in 1.3 litres of air. With a piston engine, 3 revoloutions of the crank draw in 1.3 litres of air - however, the rotary would have fully burnt this 1.3 litres of air in 3 cycles, the piston engine needs 4 crank rotations to draw in AND burn 1.3 litres of air.
and for your guys info, im currently 20 and insured with adrian flux - 3300 third party fire and theft.
Got a quote from firebond, based on being 21 with 3 yrs NCB (im 21 in april, current policy expires feb) for 1422 fully comp
oh what a difference!
Engine\'s are deffinately 1308cc
My V5c (or whatever it\'s called) has 2616cc
And insurance insist that its a 2354cc (They insisted this is all fine and above board, so I have to trust them)
Just can\'t win! :D

see i got a decent quote from firebond but that was for the 2356 engine! that was a similar price to what your paying.. since then ive got them to change ti to 2.6 and it went up to 1980. which is serious money, but im just going to have to lump it for another year and see how the insurance pans out next year, when maybe all this 2354/2600 confusion gets sorted out
I wouldnt count on it being sorted out - it\'s been like it for years!
Antony - INSIST they insure you as a 1.3, because thats what size the engine is. THERE IS NO WAY IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM THAT OUR ENGINES ARE 2.6 LITRES.
The capacity of our engines is 1.3 litres, simple as that. If they try and tell you anything diferent, you are best off insuring the car as a 1.3, not a 2.6, because the car ISNT a 2.6, and it has a capacity of 1.3 litres.
they cant moan if you insure it as a 1.3.
This is a nightmare and I wouldn\'t advise anyone insuring as a 2354cc as the insurers will use any and every excuse they can possibly find to worm their way out of paying out in the event of an accident. Yes it gets you a better quote but in the long run I think it would be a false economy if you had an accident. Plus getting done after an accident with technically invalid insurance wouldn\'t be nice either!
I\'ve a UK FD and because of the messed up database that the insurers use there is no UK FD listed, the only one that comes close is the 2626cc Auto that you\'ve mentioned. In the end I got insured througha company who specialise in track day cars, they really don\'t care about these sort of details.
To be honest I think that £2k at 21 in an FD is about right. I paid £1600 at 24 last year!
cheers
G
false economy?!
A ROTARY ENGINE IS NOT A 2600cc, a 2616cc OR a 2354CC, IT IS A 1308CC, ALWAYS HAS BEEN ALWAYS WILL BE AND WILL NEVER CHANGE, INSURING YOUR RX7 AS ANY OTHER ENGINE SIZE IS A FALSE ECONOMY AND A WASTE OF MONEY. INSURERS WILL NOT HAVE A LEG TO STAND ON AS THE PHYSICAL CAPACITY OF A ROTARY ENGINE IS 1308CC, END OF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im not saying insurers will not contest it by the way, but at the end of the day, they ask you what size engine the car is. The car has a 1308cc engine; so the engine size is 1308cc.
What can be more black and white?
GeckoGareth, I think that the list does show a UK spec car although it\'s not very clear. "Mazda RX7 (turbo inj) manufactured 1992-1995 2354cc
Bobfish, I don\'t think anybody is trying to disagree with what you are saying, but insurance companys nearly always look at the list and as we can see that is a right mess.
this is true, but at the end of the day - if they say its invalid, you take them to court. The engine size IS a 1.3 litre - so whats the issue?
Its their error, not yours
Problem is though the V5 will still say 2616cc (for most) even though we all know it\'s a 1308cc. So again there is a discrepancy!
And it\'s not simple to change V5c to 1308cc. Remember the age old thread......
http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4041&highlight=2616
Ho hum
They will not acknowledge a 1308cc, however I would insure as 2354cc for a more realistic quote. My V5 states my car is a 1308cc so I would defend myself if they refused to pay. Some V5s show cc as 2616cc so that would be more difficult to defend.
At the end of the day this does not really affect me as mine is highly modified so is insured on a classic policy based on value and horsepower.
I told my insurer it was a 1300cc and they just did it?
I agree, if its REGISTERED as a 2.6 then it will be harder, but at the end of the day - its still a 1.3 by capacity. You could argue the logbook is incorrect.

spoke to churchill today and i was saying well my log book says 1.3 and they said well because its a rotary engine our system just says 2354, but that will be fine as its the correct model ( i was thinking good this is recorded) then he says oh you need to be over 25 for this car! nooooo.

Am insured with Elephant, for a 2354cc engine, for another 10 days then I\'ll change to Keith Michaels insurance brokers, who did not even bother to ask what size engine it is because they have a clue as to what an RX7 is!! :D
You younger fellas pay a lot for insurance, mine in £1200 fully comp and used for commuting, 26, 6 points and all mods quoted and covered! not bad eh, and now there is NO chance of my insurance company turning around and saying \'sorry this car is a 2616cc engine not a 2354cc, so your policy is void ... see ya laters!!\' Now if that scenario ever occurs, I get my money no problem and an insurance broker stays alive :p
I see that there is quite an RX7 community around Watford/Pinner/Ricky here .... should organise a mini-meet some time.
Mine\'s registered as 2616cc as it\'s a UK car, it\'s insured through a company that don\'t really care about the engine size just the BHP and miles I will do in it.
I know how bad insurers are at getting out of paying up and if you think that taking them to court if they refuse to pay out due to void insurance policies would be cheaper than the saving made getting your FD insured as 2354cc (which inceidently I was told shows up as group 16 not 20) then go ahead.
I appreciate that nobody likes paying over the odds for insurance but at the end of the day we all know that these cars are about as high up as you can go in insurance terms. The only reason that the premiums aren\'t double what they are is because the value of the cars is dropping through the floor.
cheers
Gareth
Surely the important thing here is that the car is insured correctly??? If your company is quoting 2354 IT IS UP TO YOU TO MAKE THEM UNDERSTAND they are quoting the wrong car, at the end of the day the company has a \'get out clause\' - \'failure to disclose correct details will invalidate your policy\'
my point exactly, but noone seems to care nor understand.
The car IS a 1.3, always will be, never will change (unless you change the engine)
regardless of whether the insurance company consider it a 2616 or a 2354 engine size, agreeing to this IS DISCLOSING INCORRECT DETAILS!!!!
Am i right in thinking that the 2354cc is the 12A engine size? if a 13B is 2608cc, but can be registered as a 1300cc, what is the equevilent 12a cc?Please,
Thanks Bob
no, 12a is 1146cc eg. 2292cc 10a is 982cc or 1964cc

The 13b engine used in the 2nd & 3rd gen RX7 is 1308cc. They used the *1.8 theory in the 2nd gen (1308 * 1.8 = 2354cc). At some point in time the gods must have decided to round this to *2 (1308 * 2 = 2616cc) to appear on 3rd gen Rx7s.Which raises a ? are all UK spec V5s listed as 2616cc?
It seems that if you phone an insurance Co who wants to adhere to the database then lots of people could be classed uninsured, if you look at the list type R, RB and RS 3rd gens are 2354cc.(with incorrect manufacture dates) The UK spec is 2354cc(with correct manufacture dates), then 1 insertion for a 2616cc Auto (with correct manufacture dates)
As Jody said it is best to speak to someone who knows what an RX7 is.
In my opinion, the people who work for the insurance companies should know a little about cars...... not inside out, but no what car they are trying to get quotes on! this would reduce the cock ups regarding cars like the RX7, and relave us lot of the stress and numerous anoying people saying "it\'s not a 1.3, and they didn\'t make that spec..." Ahhhhh!!!

dont no if this helps:
im 21 3 years driving 1 accident, 0 nc, mine is 1300 with elephant. dont ask me how they work it, but when i rang to double check it it went up to 2000 but i had the original quote saved which was good.
and it is listed as 1992 type r import 2.6.
so i am all happy.
Quote from: ro284Am i right in thinking that the 2354cc is the 12A engine size? if a 13B is 2608cc, but can be registered as a 1300cc, what is the equevilent 12a cc?Please,
Thanks Bob
sorry dude...im not having a go at you in particular but...
JESUS CHRIST THE RX7 HAS A 1.3 LITRE ENGINE, IT IS 1308CC ALWAYS WILL BE, THAT WILL NEVER CHANGE. WHY DO YOU THINK ITS CALLED a 13B and not a 26B?!!?!?!?!
IF YOU POUR WATER INTO YOUR INLET MANIFOLD WITH YOUR EXHAUST PORTS BLOCKED, THE ENGINE WILL TAKE 1.3 LITRES!!! NOT 2.6 LITRES!!!!
Quote from: davpowelldont no if this helps:
im 21 3 years driving 1 accident, 0 nc, mine is 1300 with elephant. dont ask me how they work it, but when i rang to double check it it went up to 2000 but i had the original quote saved which was good.

i do know all that Bobfish, sorry it was a clumsy way of finding out what cc a 12A is,
Cheers Bob (not jusus christ)
one chamber will take the 654cc\'s + however many CC\'s are allowed for compression at what is effectively the same as TDC.
In the same way that the capacity of a piston engine is its swept capacity and not the total volume of the cylinder at BDC
If we were being really pedantic, if we take the volume of all 6 chambers at once, during 3 full ecentric shaft rotations the total working volume is always virtually the same :)
Right ok. The 13b engine is quite rightly 1308cc we all know that but most insurance people don\'t and that\'s what the\'re database is for. The database, as far as rotary\'s are concerned, is wildly incorrect and unless it gets updated then we will have to live with this. So.....
If your V5c says it is 2354cc or 2616cc then insure it as what it says there. All your documents will tie up then.
If you are unhappy with that then you will have to get the V5c changed to 1308cc but as in the link I posted earlier you could get some problems.

is your car being picked up on the reg number or you having to pick twin turbo import?
as if i set up a new account living surrey, 4 years driving 0ncb 5500 value, 5000 miles a year, no accidents its still £3000. so im not sure how you are getting the best quote in the world with a crash and no ncb. unless your not having to use the car selector and its picking up your car differently.... doesnt make sense.
can you email me ? conspiracydjathotmail.com
i wonder what happens if i just type in your reg
sorry mate been bust so havnt had chance to reply, i hav to select twin turbo i only got my quote wen i rang them though. goog luck
