Man, I nearly killed myself in the rex this weekend. Gave it a bootfull from standstill, in a straight line & it went sideways after about 20 yards! Snaked down the road into the oncomming traffic & just missed a 4x4 (still dont know how - must have breathed in...).
I dunno whether its the salt or what, but this thing is dangerously unpredictable in anything but dry roads.
Certainly made me realise that I have NO idea how to drive this beast now its got all this power.
(note to self: Ast Tim if he really did put in that LSD.)
Anyhoo, does anyone know of a skid pan that you can take your own car on? I need some sort of practice.
Dare I say it mate but any rwd car with no traction control in the wet or damp conditions will skid if booted !!
Surely you should adjust your driving to the conditions.
Sorry for the negative comment, just that there always seems to be accidents from people doing silly things in the winter time,
Had some idiot in a Fiesta pull in front of me going round a roundabout, lucky the brakes on the 7 are awesome !!

Well, mine let loose quite a few times last week, without even trying. Dan I think the roads are just REALLY REALLY greasy right now.
Another thing is that these engines as standard have a heavy flywheel. Take your foot off the gas when its damp and the wheels keep on turning (especially if you\'re sideways), where as a light weight flywheel would allow you to recover the vehicle more quickly or \'feather the throttle\' close to the level of adhesion.
Big wheels also add to the flywheel effect.
Hmm, I do have big wheels....
Ho ho! I can go faster with more confidence in my deisel estate!!
I think I may mothball the rex untill the summer.
That\'ll be the boost mate, not much you can do except keep off of the loud pedal I\'m afraid. The recent ICE has brought all the grease to the surface, until the next lot of heavey rain the roads will be treacherous for all high power RWD cars.
Still, it stopped you falling asleep I bet? ;)
Its not just 1st gens ... rwd cars in this weather all need treating with respect.
Found this out first hand last night, setting up the timing on the rally car (Lada Riva, group A cam, cage, full rally prep) I was in the passenger seat, hit a patch of black ice at 45-50 and rolled it end over end at least once (not sure to be honest) ... battered and bruised but thank f^&k for roll cages.
so play carefully :)
Blimee Mike, your life is like a hollywood film!!
I thought I was having all the fun....
(end over end? can a car do that?!)
I wouldn\'t pay to watch this film !
Yes, its suprisingly easy to roll a car (especially when ditches are involved) I will get some photos eventually ... its a damn good advert for safety devices roll cages !
glad your ok mike,
did it all happen in slow motion?
i bet you left a pinch mark in the seat!
no, it was a blur as if the scenery sped up as we hit !
sounds like you were lucky
what do you need from a 12a?
I\'m after evrything really, a complete set of running gear, from oil cooler back to the gearbox and everything engine/gearbox related inbetween :D
yes we were lucky ... or unlucky I suppose :xconfused
i\'ll have look around think i have a alternator i have a auto box for free if you want it!
FFS Mike, you do like to upstage people dont you!!! :rollin
Glad you\'re ok though :yes
I never imagined you could get the momentum in a Lada to over end it!
Seriously.. glad your ok Mike, thats the main thing.
Rob.
