Title: Quick Power FC question
Post by: D3S on November 23, 2005, 11:43:02 AM
Probably been asked before but can i run the powerfc on the rx, I.e have it fitted and not get it mapped without any ill effects? I was reading in jap perfomance mag that you could and it takes into account basic mods like air filters and exhaust (not decat)

Cheers

Hi...

Yeah you can it just runs a base map (like mine is at the mo)..pip at wgt said to me its rich and retarded (must be why my MPG is so crap!  :D )

It does take into account basic mods but depends on which version ECU you have i think as to exectly what..i know there is a base map (early ecu\'s) and a base map mod (later ecu\'s)

Yeah, i have a PFC on base map too. Runs fine - knock isn\'t too bad (Must be because its running rich). Did a run up to birmingham NEC on it and I worked out i did 15-16mpg running at no more than 80mph! :eek  So, yeah, it is a bit rich!!

That is what i have heard it can run a tad rich :)

When fitting your ecu did you have to let the car idle for awhile?

Cheers

Well i have a week of work, i have the ECU and commander sitting on my desk and i am bored off seeing it there and want to plug it in so to speak. If i cant handle the MPG i will just run the standard ecu.

But hopefully i should get it mapped before the MPG does my head in lol

It\'s easy to setup. Unplug the old one (Passenger footwell) and plug new one in. Plug in Commander to ECU. Start car (with all electrics off) Run for about 15 minutes i think it is. Then turn the heated rear screen on. Keep running for another 5 minutes. Then turn off the heated rear screen and turn on the air con, and keep running for another 5 minutes. There. Job done! Easy as that!

Cheers dude,

But can i ask, the heated rear screen? why lol

yeah you have to do an idle learn process..start the car up with everything off,let it idle for 10 min..turn the rear window defrost on-let it idle for 10 min. Then switch the defrost off and switch the A/C on for 10 min..after that the power fc should of learned the idle setup..it says you may have to adjust the idle bleed screw also..(under the T/B elbow)..

I downloaded the FD3S RX7 Power FC FAQ and  have it infront of me - think it was from rx7club.com but im not 100% on that..go have a look there is a whole section on the PowerFC....  :)

For some reason (I don\'t know why!) the rear heated screen effects idle - more electrical load. I have to turn mine on sometimes to stop my engine from hunting! Sor some reason, with the apexi on, it sometimes hunts at idle, but when i turn the heated rear screen on, the revs stabilize! Wierd - anyone want to offer an explanation!

Thats covered in this list i downloaded..

It says..

Ive done the idle learn process, but the car revs up and down at idle?
You need to adjust the bleed screw.recommended setting is about 1/2 to 3/8 of a turn out from fully in..

hope that helps :)

Wicked! Cheers mate!  :guinness Mucho appreciated! I do know that the adjustment screw has been messed about with a lot, so that\'s a likely reason! Coolio!

well its all fitted, didnt take that long, took longer for me to decide where the commander should go lol.

Now maybe someone can tell me if i did something wrong, when you put the AC did you put it on full blast? as i only put it on half and when i put it on full it hunts at idle??? odd!

Also does the Power fc pick up issues with the sensors? as i have noticed the heat warning light comes on. But the temps are at 85C but when it comes on the air temp on the commander reads nothing, when it heat warning light goes off the reading comes back on the commander.

Any ideas?

Besides that it goes really well now and i dont get random boost spike :D

Yes, the ecu and commander can show up errors with sensors. The heat light is indeed an indication of something failing.

If you go to the etc menu, then i think its the second or third menu down (switch check - something like that) it will highlight which switch or sensor is going wrong by highlighting it in black. Post up here and someone can tell you which sensor it is.... although i think you have already figured it out!! ;)

lol yeah i think we are nearly there working it out what sensor is giving grief.

Thats cool that the PFC can check things like that otherwise you would of never known.

I will have a look at that later tonight.

Cheers Nikp

I have a printout of what the codes mean at home. Mine is showing an error at the moment too: metering oil pump posion sesnor. So I\'m sticking oil in my fuel to keep her lubricated!

That one sounds slightly more interesting that mine and more important :)

Its handy that the PFC you can diagnose faulty sensors as well...hmm now i am worried to check what else maybe broke lol

Yeah, tis a bit more serious as its possible that the metering oil pump isn\'t putting any oil into the engine! So that\'s why I am putting oil into the petrol - as recommended by Carl, so i have no doubt that my engine is still safe!! :)

It\'s not actually - that\'s why I\'m putting oil in with the petrol. Apparently it is possible to remove the oil metering pump with out removing the turbo pack, but it\'s a lot easier if you do remove it - and that\'s an 8 hour job for someone who knows what they\'re doing! So I\'m leaving that one for a bit!! :p

Annoying that it does not show anything at the moment, i will have to wait next time it comes on the check what sensor it is.

I replaced the oil metering pump a few months back. It can be done without removing the turbo\'s - mine stayed in place. However you need to remove the water pump housing because the bottom hose union is in the way. Once this is off, its not too bad - just a little difficult to get to the back 10mm bolt on the OMP. I think it took about 4 hours with me finding out what to remove along the way.

MAkes you not want to plug in PFC when it starts finding faults lol.

Well the PFC is telling me that the air temp sensor is playing up, does anyone know where that is located?

Cheers for the info. Doesn\'t sound too bad - although I think one of my water pump bolts is about to sheer. It just felt wrong when i started undoing it a while back - so i left it!!

Yeah - this is located under the UIM (Upper Intake manifold).

Ahh yeah i know the one, that maybe more of a lose connection that broken as i have had the UIM off a number of times and probably knocked it.

The Power FC will always default back to the standard base map when re-initialised.
