Title: How much?
Post by: *Bowsy* on November 22, 2005, 01:04:42 PM
I recently put my 3rd gen Rx7 up for sale so that i could purchace a higher spec singled turbo\'ed Rx  :D  but since putting it up forsale the car ain\'t working.
Long story short i think it need a rebuild as i\'m have zero compression rating in the rear rotor.
The front one is working fine abd from the looks and checks everything else is fine.

Anyway i\'m wondering whats the best thing to do.
Should is sell it as rx7 needing a rebuild or should i rebuild it then sell it?

I\'m looking to loose the least amount of money as i want this other rx.

i\'ve posted the details of my car in the forsale section awhile back if anyone wants to check it out :D tell me what ya think

Hmmmm,

Diffecult one to answer, as a un-rebuilt rx are worth little now, even a fully rebuilt standard rx will go for like under 6.5K ?

Looking at your rx i would say with a fully rebuilt engine you could probably get £7K for it ? So work it out from there if its worth rebuilding or selling as is ?

If sold as it is probably fetch 3.5K ?

All approx figures, no offence intended.

no offence taken,as thats what i thought i would get for the car if i sold it as it is at the mo.

How much does the cheapest rebuild kit cost?.

if i did the rebuild i will prob do it myself with a mate who did a rebuild on his Fd last year so that would save me some money but it would take longer to do as i can\'t get the car in the garage at the mo due to deccorating.

Silly sujestion but ther was a rex which had a bump and he was pulling it apart.......
Why not ask him if he\'s selling the engine out of that and you could save mony by doing a transplant??

Jono\'s right, the members name is Dandan, I think he still has the engine for sale!? Has been rebuilt just before he crashed it, by RE:Worx. Believe it was completely undamaged too.....

This would seem the most cost effective route to take.

Everyone who mentioned me is right, i do have a fully rebuilt engine up for sale from my crash damaged FD.
It has approx 1000kms after running in so it is basically mint. I\'m looking for any offers over £2000 for it now, which I think is a good price but I\'m not desperate for the money so I can wait for the right buyer. I really don\'t want to go below the £2000 mark.

It\'s there if anyone wants it though!

I\'ve decided to get engine rebuilt.
I\'m going to rebuild it myself with some help from a mate who rebuilt his FD last year.
I didn\'t relise that rebuild kits were that cheap :D plus.
Going to buy the kit from rotaryaviation or atkinsrotary not decided yet but both seem to be a similar kit.

I\'m going to start stripping the engine bay 2moro and get it all ready for when the rebuilt kit arrives.

Anybody got any ideas on wer to start? lol, what to remove and what not to remove.

They are basicly the same kit, i get more joy from Bruce Turrentine, (East Coast Rotary). I belive he puts the kits together so might get a better deal.

you should buy new rotor housings too when doing a rebuild.

if you buy the vids from rotary aviation it tells you how to remove it and replace it, ive manged the removal so far and it wasnt that bad a job

basically you take it out as a complete lump leaving the box in the car, if you disconnect the loom from the ecu you can take this out with the motor.

i\'m ordering the kit today and i\'m about 50% through stripping the engine bay all ready for removal  :)

I will prob get new housings but i\'ll wait till i\'ve stripped it all down first and see what the original housings are like

housings are pretty much mandatory replacement for a rotary, its the end plates you have to inspect for wear.

Housings go for circa 300, see the various RX7 vendors in the uk for details.

Why? surely it all depends on what you want out of the engine and how much $$$$ you have spare. If the budget is tight, and the housings are in perfectly reuseable condition I don\'t see why you would need to change them. Put it this way, even if you can directly relate using 2ndhand housings to a lower/shorter engine life, then even if they last half the time (extreme example perhaps) then that could potentially be 30,000miles. Now say you only do 6000 miles per year, then that newly built engine with 2ndhand housings and all new seals would still last 5 years, however, if building yourself then it would have cost almost half in parts in the first place. Or you use new housings, throw a tip a year down the line and you\'re back to using 2ndhand housings, to save $$$, with a much lighter pocket from the first rebuild   ;)

Obviously this is only my opinion and should not be taken as gospel, which it won\'t I\'m sure, lol.

Good luck with the build,

Paul

I have to say i think like Wav, the idea is to check parts, if there good reuse them don\'t change stuff because you read it some where. The whole idea is its done on a budget. So do your home work and find out what the acceptable tolerances are.

You would only replace both housings if you where searching for power, No Budget and Every Psi of Compression makes a diffrece and all that.
