Title: Not starting from Cold
Post by: rotary_rogersFC on November 20, 2005, 03:02:13 PM
My brothers T2 (vzr_dave) is having issues starting from cold. It struggles to get up the revs and sometimes doesnt start. He tried it this morning and it didnt start. Now it wont start. It catches and the lights on the dash go off but it just doesnt want to go. Could this be a problem with the spark plugs?

Sounds like a bad battery to me...

Is it only when its cold? Does it drive ok? No missfire etc?

I don\'t want to worrie you but have you had it compression tested? When its warm do you ever see White smoke from the Exhaust?

When it starts up, does it build? (like fires on one rotor then it builds up revs and will start to clear)

Try this, Next time you run it up to temp don\'t turn it off at the key, pull the EGI fues out so it runs out of fuel in the rail, turn you ign off and replace it. let it cool down and try it. If it starts no problem you have a leaky Injector,

If you are still struggling First get it Comp tested, then leave it until its cold again remove the EGI  fuse and the two top plugs, Turn it over and see what comes out of the bores? If you see fluid or smoke coming out of one of the plug holes stick some paper or something like that in ft so you catch some of it. Smell if to see if its water or Fuel.

Do you still have the problem with it loosing coolent pressure?

Another possability is you are seeing symptoms of blown water seal?

no problems with coolant after i topped it up a little. Coolant system was fine all day yesterday. When it was warm it started but almost the way you described up top.

"When it starts up, does it build? (like fires on one rotor then it builds up revs and will start to clear)"

this is what the car does when starting hot or cold.

When driving the car its fine, No misfiring and it seems to run very well. I suppose it could be an issue with compression.

Ok, Pull the Egi Fuse when its running and see if that makes a diffrence when you try restarting it? It could be as simple as a leaking Injector.

You may also want to have a real good look at hoses etc for cracks or leaks? becouse thats how it would start if it had a bad air leak.

Did you say it had been stood for a while? Did it run ok until recently?

Heres the Story lol

Rad split but car didnt over heat. Car sat for 2 weeks, then replaced the rad pipes due the original leaking.

Car sat for 2 weeks, came to drive it and it was fine. Coolant system fine starting perfectly when hot and cold.

Come the next morning, the car struggled to start. I then pressed the accelerator and flooded it tyring to get it up the revs.

a month later (i think) me and dave get the car started by tow starting it. (Friday)

Runs great for two days but has the bogy starting problem.

This morning it bogged down at start and died.

Up to present.

cheers

Have you tried a can of WD40 ;)

It may be that its just damp? WD40 every plug or conection you can find inc both ends of the plug leads, get it running and give it a good run. Then take it from there.

Right good news guy\'s, got the Plugs out today and gave them a good clean. Nothing wrong with them, brown in colour. Its now starting how it should do. i.e. 3K kick when starting. Its also driving soo much better so looks like it was the plugs afterall.
