Title: which intercooler
Post by: chrisJDM on November 16, 2005, 03:52:38 PM
have been considering getting a new intercooler for my FD for use with the stock twins.

have been looking at a few and dont know which one 2 go for, the links show the ones i am considering:

http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/blitz%20fmic.htm
http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/greddyfmic55.htm
http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/hks%20fmic.htm

which one is probably best? is there alot of difference, is it another one of these things which is a matter of opinion?  what other intercoolers should i consider? not to worried bout price but odviously the cheaper the better, means i can spend money on other mods  :p

get a knight sports V mount.

I have a three row greddy front mount at the moment but will be going V mount as it keeps things cooler than a normal front mount. More expensive but you get a new rad aswell.

I have the Greddy too, and with my uprated radiator (Sugita) I see water temps of around 79-85 average, ceeps up to low 90\'s when giving it stick.

Sweetie i have a Trust FMIC on my car. It works very well. I see ACT of about 10 deg over ambiant and water temps of 80 deg on the road.

Scott

If you get a FMIC try to keep the rad in a near stock position. Avoid standing it up verticle

sorry only just read this they are around the same as dreXel\'s with my front mount. Looking at brain\'s vmount on his black T51 turbo\'d car the temps where right down from that.

I had a 2 row greddy FMIC for stock twins and the greddy elbow, cost just over £800 new for the lot including shipping and import duty from rotary extreme, came with all fixings and pipes.

Had to sell it before ever fitting it though

I think you will be wasting your money on a V-Mount then, 85 C is about right on the money for water temps. I mean what advantage will you get with running 70 degrees for water temp, you wont make any extra power!?

I think unless you are doing major track days where you are doing loads and loads of laps I cant see a major advantage of a V-Mount

Also worth making sure you don;t destroy the driving characteristics by intorducing huge lag.   Way too big and you may never make proper boost.

Also consider the piping route, keep it as short as possible and no tight bends!

I\'m currently having a custom i/c and rad made up to run with non-seq twins, later going single but it\'s a bit of an experiment and should work well but not guaranteed.  It will have decent pipe routing and fit the nose perfectly with little \'dead\' area.  Doesn\'t file under \'cheap route\' though.

decided im probably gona go for the GReddy intercooler and on the page it says i need to have a GReddy elbow, on the site it has two different ones, a normal GReddy elbow and one with a BOV flange on the side for the S type bov, seeing that i already have a S Type GReddy BOV already fitted would it be a good idea to go for that one, what difference would it make???

I don\'t know if it\'s the same with the rotary\'s but I know with piston engins the closer you can run them to boiling point the better they perform ( for some bizzar reason!!)

I think at around 90-95 degrees the ECU starts retarding the Ignition on a Rotary therefore losing power, hence optimal in the 80s, 0- 65 degrees the ECU has a water temperature correction figure which richens up the mixture again therefore losing power again
