Title: Rubbing
Post by: Jodypamplin on November 16, 2005, 09:23:40 AM
Having just upgraded to 17s last weekend, which I am chuffed to buts with, there is some rubbing on the front left tyre. this happens only when i am turning left and the wheels are at about 22 degrees.

I am pretty sure I know what the problem is - a bit if plastic sticking out, but is it worth getting the arches rolled? am aware that even with 18s this is not necessary most of the time, but the plastic trim around the wheels is in a shocking state!

Or, what is the best way of dealing with this, simply cut off the plastic that is causing the rubbing.

man it sounds dirty  :eek

any thoughts? cheers

Take them off and give them to me!! :rollin  :rollin  :rollin  :rollin I love them carbon wheels!

On a more serious note- I think I would trim back the offending item and then source some new plastic liners, as your gonna need them with the great british winter we have!

Yeah ok, i\'ll just go back to my stock 16s, at least there is no dirty rubbing ..... when do you want to pick them up  :evillaugh

might take it next door to the local wheel place and see if they can do something half decent to sort it, we\'ll see. cheers mate!

now that moose has stolen my original wheels i have some shiny new 18s in place. these actually don\'t rub at all at the front unlike the old ones, but are very close to the top of the arches at the rear, and i mean very close! they don\'t rub but i think to be on the safe side i am gonna get the top lips rolled.

does anyone know anywhere good in the south to get this done?  i have phoned knightsbrook about 5 times and am still waiting for a reply. good customer service...

Cheers Nigel.

Have just come back from the garage as was getting my rear pads done and asked if they could sort out the rubbing. apparently can\'t be done  :eek

if the offending area is cut away it would be an open lane to dust and general crap right into the engine bay. I have to do something about this, taling any left corners is actually the most dirty sounding thing .... ever  :reallymad

Any chance of fabricating/making up a new liner to sit further away from the wheel??

Could be worth looking into!

That sounds great in theory, but is there anyone that does this kind of thing that at a reasonable price

will be taking a more detailed look on sat to get a better idea of what is going on .... but oh man does it sound rough  :reallymad

Is it the steel wing the wheels are hiting or the plastic liner?
If its the plastic.....  Just get a paint stripper gun, heat up the offending area and reform it so it;s out of the way!

R-tec!! K-tec tune horrible french things!! :p

My experience with R-tec wasnt great. Got some wheels for my Puma from them and had similar problem. Drove all the way from Southampton to them and they just shruged their shoulders! \'nothing we can do for that mate\' :eek

Ended up using heat gun and large mallet to \'bend\' back the offending metal on inner arch- which worked a treat!

Good luck with it! :wave

have hopefully solved this - no heating and re-moulding of the plastic arches though ... the trusty 2x4 and some levering  :D

basically the front left wheel was very close to the plastic arch, and also to the metal sub frame. after removal of the plastic, which is significantly worn after a week of dirty rubbing, it was evident that the metal would be in contact with the wheel, and possibly cause even worse damage! so grabbed a long 2x4 and levered the thin metal edge away from the wheel, basically bending it, and there is now, hopefully, adequate clearance. not ideal, but a more hands on approach to an irritating problem.

funny that its not the same on the right wheel

anyway time to  :3gears-rh
