Good afternoon all.
I\'ve started to strip out the engine bay to try and fix an exhaust leak that\'s stopping me getting an MOT.
Anyway I\'ve got as far as removing the elbows from the front of the turbos when I\'ve noticed that there seems to be quite alot of play on the shaft. Enough for the tips of the impeller to touch the housing. So how normal is this? Does it all firm up once the engine is running and there\'s oil pressure there??
I have a small video of the movement if anyone wants to look. (Although not sure how to put it up here  )
Thanks.
Sounds like it\'s about to let go :eek
when tips start hitting the housing is starts to throw it off balance, i would say it dosn\'t sound to healthy to be honest i\'d get it looked at.
Ok. So there is supposed to be some movement then. There doesn\'t appear to be any scoring on the housing at all, but when I move the shaft with my fingers it is possible for it to touch the sides.
Maybe it\'s not as bad as I thought.
I\'ll just carry on removing the turbo pack then to find this bloody leak!
I\'ve been reading up on other threads, and I\'m now worried that my turbo pack oils seals may have gone.
In the last few weeks I\'ve noticed smoke from the exhaust at idle, usually it was just a puff that wafted past the car. But on at least one occasion it kept on smoking until I revved it a bit. Didn\'t seem to do it whilst driving, or not enough for me to notice anyway.
Smelt very rich like petrol, but could have been oil. This combined with the play in the impeller shafts, maybe could be knackered? The Turbo pack was replaced last year when the rebuild was done.
What do you experts think?? :)
Ok seeing as I got no joy here :( I\'m taking the car down to RX Motors to get it checked out.
Thanks to mullins and McCARTHY for their input yesterday though :)
