Title: Uk RX7
Post by: Mazzyrx7 on November 14, 2005, 11:29:56 AM
Hi all

After posting a thread about a bit of a dog of a UK RX7 I was going to buy. Thanks to everyone who posted. It made my mind up for me and I decided against getting it in the end.

So I\'ve now found this one for sale http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/56235.htm. It sound like a good car. But there\'s one thing that worries me. The guy who\'s selling the car has had a cat back exhaust fitted (4 months ago) without having a Remap done on the Apex\'i power FC ECU. He thinks the Apex\'i ECU can sense that it has a free flowing exhaust on the car and has altered the map to compensate. But that doesn\'t sound right to me. I\'ve had a little search around but can\'t find any definitive answer. So would the car need a remap or will it be fine running the way it is at the moment?

Other than that the car sounds great with the bonus of having a rebuild done on the car by RoTechniks 15000 miles ago at a cost of 9K. He says he has the invoice to back up the claim of the 9k rebuild. That\'s a crazy amount money for a rebuild in my mind.

Thanks again

Tom

Think you can run a cat back no worries, its when removing the cat where you get problems.

There are rebuilds and rebuilds. We would have to see the itemised costs. You could just replace the water seals. Or you can replace housings, all seals and springs, bearings, and so on and so on.

9k Rebuild!!, he must have had everything replaced, Housings , side and end plates, Rotors, shaft etc ! defo I would ask for the breakdown of parts used for the rebuild. My rebuild was approx 3K but that included all seals, springs, New Rotor Housings and porting.

I think the guy is saying that 9k under bonnet has been spent, not just on rebuild.
Rotechniks Ive always found to be very thorough, so whatever needed changing would have been changed, as ultimately they would have just billed the customer for it. My first rebuild was at Rotechniks and that came out at £27k, because my list got longer and longer, so is possible.

You should be ok with a cat back change as stock map is very rich and apexi should be able to cope with that. Easy fix, ask the guy if he objects to a power run to get a map, cost approx £50.

the bill includes everything that was done in that session - quotes from the ad:
this included new turbos among many other major parts all of which are detaled in an extensive folder of work carried out
No silly modifications have \'just been bolted on\' only reliability mods carried out during rebuild(like custom enlarged radiator and an a\'pexi power fc ecu)

That sounds like a really good deal - if u haven\'t already been to check it out, do so! RoTecknics have an excellent reputation for good workmanship (I\'ve always found them a bit pricey but hey ho) and if they have done all of the stuff he says, you\'ll have a top car there.

£27k, as in £27,000, twenty seven thousand pounds?
Please tell me this is a typo?!?!
if it isn\'t what the hell did you have done!!?

For that money i would have wanted a gold plated engine bay with a diamond encrusted plenum  :cool

in saying that, when i did mine the bill was 8k, that was including ecu intercooler and various other shiney bits..(none of them gold plated though  ;) )

with the sort of spec Gary\'s cars are built to, £27k wouldn\'t surprise me at all

Mazzy,

What is the actual price of the car ?

This will show if its a good buy or not as you can get a rebuilt rx looking quite standard for like £7K ?

asking £7800 for it, but it hasn\'t just had a rebuild - everything sounds like it was replaced.

Also a UK car with FSH!

Thanks guys

Well the guy\'s going to take my Subaru Impreza as a P/X. He wanted £7800 for his car.

He wants my car + £1800 which I thinks a little over the top and he\'s not budging on the price.

This is my current car:

The Impreza\'s a great car, but I really fancy a change and have always wanted a RX7.

Just do us a favour - take it really easy for the first few months... none of the 4wd wotsists on the FD to get you out of trouble but plently of rwd to get you into it!

Doesn\'t sound like a bad bargain imo.  Moving to a box to a curvy delight!

Thanks for the word of warning. Think I should be okay with the RWD of the RX7. I had a TVR 400se for while and that thing was deadly in the wet and the dry. But I will be taking it easy, you can\'t run until you can walk. There\'s a time and a place to go fast and a wet rainy British day isn\'t one of them.

When I was out on a test drive in the RX7 I was looking at the other week, it decided to rain. The rear wheels do light up a little to easily when the second turbo kicks.  in.

Just make sure you have a good look around the rx7 before you decide to part, only do so if you are totally happy with the deal matey.

Lots of people seem to jump into the rx and then discover things that make the ownership a nightmare, good luck matey hope its a goodun
