Been mulling over the options for the 323 now that the suspension is nearly sorted (still need some Series 2 front flexi hoses if anyone knows where I can buy some new ... not found anywhere yet)
and I\'ve come up with 3 options so far
1. (most favoured)
a 12a, I\'ve been looking for a while now but nothing has really inspired me to part with some cash. I\'m really close to asking round for quotes for a nice rebuild ... of course it wouldn\'t be standard :) unless anyone else can think of some options. I\'d even been eying up motors on Ausrotary :o (not really fair on the UK scene I feel)
2. (the dark side)
A Mazda 323 Gti engine on mx5 box ... I\'ve found a real soft spot for these engines as a) they are cheap and b) I can\'t believe the amount of abuse they endure and still put out respectable HP and torque.
3. (a bit too much work for a slacker like me with too many toys err. projects)
A 13b 6 port has been offered, but they are side mount and fuel injected so theres a few more bits to worry about (I don\'t want to bite off more work than I can cope with)
or mystery option 4 ?!
The 13b that I have offered can easliy be front mounted just by changing the front cover for a 12a one Mike.
The main thing you need to know is will you have to modify the sump for the subframe?
Regards
Carl
Its the the fuel injection thats bugging me most. Theres not a great deal of wiring in the 323 and I\'d like to keep it that way :)
I suppose the other option is to keep the standard engine for a year or so and maybe look at getting somthing suitably "angry" for it next winter.

No,No,No,.......
You only need a six port lower inlet manifold and the top part from racing beat to mate to a dellorto carb.Easy as.

Carl
do they still run a dizzy ? ... I\'ve got a 12a in bits so a front cover is easy to find. Is the front cover an easy swap ?

Yes it can and yes it is.

hmmm interesting, I\'ve sent you an e-mail.
A good complete 12A (freshly removed from a rusty RX-7) was on ebay not long ago and it went for just over £50. Keep your eyes peeled and you should be able to score a bargain.
Ahh here it is. If you check the bidding you\'ll see I missed out by £1 damnit! :spank

here is something silly
How about the 1800cc Mazda GTX lump. (tiurbo and inj)
Then fashion that to a Quaiffe Box to run front and rear wheels.
For gods sake slap me.
13b on 48 Ida, Make it breath.
Might be able to do a 48 on 13b manifold when i get back from kiwiland.
My sauces have located a goodin
is that a 6 port manifold ?
Not sure yet still waiting on price.
For rally scene i would keep it simple cos you might need to do some roadside repairs....stick with something you can understand and manage at that moment without a laptop or gizzmo\'s to get it sorted, stay within your running budget and have something that your crew understand and can work on...
I have a 12a and box going spare! :-)

Will this do :spank

Best combo ever imo. I can get brand new IDA\'s for $980. I\'m gonna pick one up when I go back in May :evillaugh
Mark, what sort of condition is the 12a in ? I take its an early one too so has the smaller ports ?
out of the mk1 (1980/81)
runs but is a bit smokey, not sure whether it\'s burning off the oil residue from the exhaust. I replaced the oil control rings and water seals recently, the apex seals and housings are in good nick (Tim at RX motors agreed that they were certainly reusable)
hmmmmmm ... 12a or 13b
Can you mail me an asking price for the 12a please.
I got a price on the 48 IDA and 13b manifold.
Matey wants £500 plus freight.
The freight to my Ma and Pa,s house would be £10 and freight to the UK should be FREE in my suitcase.
Any Takers let me know ASAP
Also posting this on FOR SALES
Brian,
Can you ring me please.

Carl

No offense to your mate but that\'s quite expensive!

He has spent over $1400 NZ on this and afterspeaking to Carl the conclusion was that this was a good price as you will know after also speaking to Carl.
I can let you know the jet sizes etc if you wish
All I am trying to do is a favour for him.
I am sure he can sell it at home but as they are a Little harder to get now days It is an opportunity to get one.
Cheers
what\'s the difference between an IDF and an IDA ? ... the IDF\'s seem to be much more resonably priced. (that IDA on Ebay didn\'t look to be in too good a condition and still fetched almost as much as a new 48DCOE)
Hi Mike,
Stud patterns are different. IDF has a choke mechanism. IDA\'s are bigger bore. IDA is very much a competition designed carbuettor. A single IDF would probably be OK on a 12A, but you\'d be in the dark regarding jetting and you\'d need to make up / modify the manifold. IDA\'s are so popular that you could get the jetting pretty near just by asking on the forums.
IDA\'s do sound good, but i\'d imagine it\'s overkill on a standard engine, my preference on a standard engine would be a sidedraught weber or dellorto... cheaper as well...
Regards
Ray
I think a sidedraft would be plenty good enough for me, this won\'t be a rally car, just a toy so outright performance isn\'t an issue.
anyway ... I\'ve been busy this weekend :evillaugh
Funny lookin 12A
Not a Rotor but good work none the less. You really have been busy mate!! ;) Is there an MX-5 knocking around you ways with no engine?? Let me know if there is!
Gotcha ... not my car :) but it does sit nicely.
a 12a is still my 1st choice I think, I\'ve been told a series 4 box needs bodywork mods + the gear lever is 100mm out of place.
Damn, fell into your evil trap :evillaugh
Yeah evil trap.
I also would have taken an MX5 less engine and box
I must admit I\'m sorely tempted by an 1800 lump
Got plenty of work to be getting on with at the moment though ! ... I still need to fit the brakes (got all this bits sorted now)
Let me have a look but I have a funny feeling hat there is a master cylinder for a series one in the garage. I put it on the old white car about a year ago but not sure if I took it off when it was scrapped. It was new and only did about 30 miles
Let you know tuesday
cool :cheers
Hey Mike never mind the new motor  what are you doing with the old 4 potter
Rich ;)
its staying put for now ... do you know someone who would like it ;)
:yes :yes :yes PM sent ;)

Noooo! the 12a and box are stil available if you want them Mike! ;)
if someone wanted the shell sans engine and stuff I would happily have the engine and box ... if I buy engine and box its going to be harder to shift the shell and I don\'t want to condem it to the scrap heap when I can hold out for a S3 being broken
we have someone who is considering the shell without engine and interior
Go a rotary. Mine has an RX4 box in it, which are stronger than the series 1-3 rx7 boxes, but unfortunately only 4 speeds. That shouldnt matter in a rally car, only reason it concerns me is cos mines a daily driver and at 100kph/60mph over there I\'m sitting at a shade over 4000rpm in top. Any of the boxes up to series 3 rx7 should definitely fit without massaging the tunnel and up to series 1(?) i think are the same length. The series 4/5 shouldn\'t be much different for size I would have thought, they\'re based on the same design. I think but am not sure that series 2 & 3 place the stick 50mm further back. Although what box is in there now? I\'m pretty sure the 323s had different sized tunnels for the 4 speed, 5 speed and auto boxes. Mine makes a very quick little roadcar even with a stock 12a in it. Blows away the vast majority of \'performance\' cars roaming the streets. I suppose your only problem over there is the lack of availability of these older parts, yes?
Rx7 stuff isn\'t too hard to come by ... certainly anything rx3/4/2/etc. isn\'t easy.
I\'ve still not 100% decided on the engine yet, off to see Carl in the new year to have a look at my 7 and the 13B 6 port. My car is a 4 speed, I guess that means I have a smaller transmission tunnel
Michael, Michael,Michael......Whatever YOU decide you want in there will fit.. :Hammer ,....for your sport I would say,low down torque, enough power to get you going out the corners, and total reliability, something you can troubleshoot on the side of the road and fix..... :Typing and SOMETHING THAT SOUNDS GLORIAS(sp) ,....can only be a :InLove A ROTOR....Buy it we will fit it... :D
As it is Christmas and you are going to see Carl.
Let me know when you are going and I will see If I can be there as well.
Two reasons.
1) to put face to name
2) I have a spare gearbox for 12a you can HAVE. No catches or hiden adgendas. Tired of falling over it really.
I am back in UK on 2nd Jan
Or you can come to me and have a peek at the 7.
I am in Farnborough. 2 mins from the M3
sounds like a sound idea :) I\'m off to see Carl sometime mid Jan (Whenever Carls free) would be great to meet up and have a chat.
Hey Mike I am also thinking about trekking down to see carl in the new year. Let us know when you might be going and we should maybe see if we can meet up?
All I have to do is organise a vehicle of some sorts as I only have a clio. Not that good for carting car parts around.
cheers, michael.
Mid Jan is the only plans at the moment. Exact date is down to discussion at the mo ... would be great to meet up !
If I have my 3 back by then I\'ll come too! :Thumbs-up
Nice one. Old skool meet at Carls workshop??? ( reckon someone should ask him first....?)
already have ;)
Hey chaps, can I come along? I\'ll make the tea!
What about me....can i come two pleassssse..... :wiggle :yes ...Ill drink the GUINNESS...... :Thumbsup!
I will bring the dancing girls....oops here comes the wife
Tempted to put the conservatory on hold and get the 7 back together and bring that.
Delayed in Auckland. We were meant to fly out at about 12am your time but the bloke who drives the sky walk thing crashed it into the plane and damaged the plane door and fusalage.
In a skanky hotel on the airport. No mini bar! :Grrr
Damn, ....no mini bar. Looks like there could be a bit of interest in this mini meet. It would be great to finally meet some of the old skool fanatics from here.
cheers, michael.
just waiting for Carl to OK ... if not we could meet up elsewhere ?
I could be up for this I\'m on a training course mid Jan and I\'ll be down that way. All depends on the weather though if I\'m gonna bring the 2 down. Is it summer time down south yet? :D
Jase
6 degrees and sunny today already !!
Have we scarrd Carl away now?

I\'ll dig out my shorts and T shirts then :cool
I htink i am busy on the 21st as there is a rally on mull, (gravel sprint type thing and I was wanting to help out marshelling.) So I guess any other weekend might be cool with me. It is a bit of a drive down, might be cool if I could drop in on someone to say hi on the way down. I sleep well on kitchen floors....hint, hint... :)

Well if its on a weekend that I\'m available, feel free to drop round if you like mate :) . Got plenty of room here. Plus a spare seat in the 2 for a nice little stroll down the motorway and back

22nd of Jan is all I can do this month.
Over due DIY beckons
I reckon since the sticky thread has been made we can all get back to telling Mike what to put in his car.
Now, where did I see that photo of a tripple rotor engine..........
