Title: What rebuild??
Post by: duff on November 11, 2005, 12:14:25 PM
Hello guys

I blew my rex up about 3 months ago now and am starting to buy the bits i need to get it upto standard. This includes a new uprated SMIC, standard twin turbo setup and a new rad when i get round to it as well.

I wanted peoples opinions really of what i should do to the motor. I use the car for fast road really and maybe track days when i get it sorted.

While the engine is out i want it porting but which type of port? Also i wanted to know about the different types of seals.

I have seen 2mm apex seals being used but what is the advantage of them? Are they more robust? give better performance?

I am just a bit unsure of what to do really, so any advice of what i should use with the rebuild would be tip top.

Cheers

stock twins will make for around 350-400bhp with the right mods (please correct me if i\'m wrong). You could go single something like a TO4E, one of the smaller singles, give a great balance power and driveability without too much lag.

Defo Apex\'i power FC makes a whole load of differance to the way the car performs.

I\'m going to be using 6 injectors in mine so that the fueling can be set up more intricatly (you get a finer spray by not chucking loads of fuel threw by say a set of std primarys and a set of big secondaries) Though lots of people go this route.

each different tuner has their own little was of doing things could be worth speaking to Tim at RX Motors, he is very good and more than very helpful.

hope this helps

yeah cheers mate that is helpful. I wanna keep the stock twins really i like the way they operate. I already have a pFC which I am gonna get remapped when i get it rebuilt. I dont really wanna go down the route of uprated injuectors though just keep the standard fuelling system but may add a uprated fuel pump.

Cheers for the input though mate appreciate it :)

Yeah you could go for an uprated pump and a variable rate fuel pressure regulator with an uprated intercooler, either SMIC or FMIC. Also worth getting the motor ported if its being rebuilt. Just go for a street port. Size really depends on how long you are gonna be running with stock twins cos if you intend on changing to a single later on, larger ports will benefit this. You could also run water injection if you are gonna run high boost through the stock twins, it\'ll keep your intake temps nice and low.

Hope this helps

p.s. if you are after a stock twin turbo setup, i have one for sale.

I know what you mean mate I know alot of people who like the single turbo setup, and i think it is a very good setup at that. I just cant justify spending that much money on a turbo kit. I just like the twin turbo setup because there isn\'t much lag (Or what i can remember from driving it haha :D) and it allows for me to drive it the way i do.

Cheers mate

Just spoke to pip from WGT to discuss what im gonna go for and i seem to have a good idea now.

Standard rebuild with mild street port
WGT V-Mount kit
Uprated fuel pump
and then a remap when its finished.

then i can get it back on the tops for a good blasting :D

If your wallet allows then yeah any good V mount will be better than a FMIC or SMIC.

You can get away with not upgrading the injectors if you are intending on still using the stock twins and push for say 350 hp.

Porting is good, for a couple hundred more £. It gives you the base for when further upgrades are done. Let alone getting better response from the engine.

Who is doing the rebuild for you?

Cheers for that freddy i think i will probably upgrade the injectors whilst im sorting everything. just trying to gauge how much money it is gonna cost me and what parts i really need to buy and which are luxuries.

My cousin was gonna rebuild it with an ex rotary rebuilder who he knows. However i have been considering getting a vendor to rebuild it so i can get a warranty.
