I felt they gave the rx8 a bit of a hard press, amzing that a 1.3l rotary engine can beet a 3.2l v6. I\'d say that the power at anglesey is just about right, there isn\'t any point in having any more, plus i bet zevans could get round there faster than 55secs
Shaun
Ohh another vid!
Any more? Please feel free to post up a link!
Well what i found interesting was that she stated on telly that it is indeed a 1300 cc engine! i wonder if anyone from D.V.L.A was watching! could this be a string for our bow?
Bob
And another thing! oil consumption! does an RX8 use more than an RX7? mine doesn\'t use much at all! i wonder if it\'s using enough! how do you tell?
Bob

Oo, something to aim for next time :D
Less than a minute is generally considered a good time, so the car must be considered reasonably good - who was driving? Tiff?
ro, oil consumption seems semi-random - mine doesn\'t use much because I blast all the internals clean with a good kicking regularly. If you queued to work every morning you\'d use shedloads, which is what a lot of people do, of course...
Used less than half a litre last track day, but it was fairly fresh oil (had about 500 road miles on) which might make a difference?
No doubt T W Whites demo driver could do it in 40 seconds eh?
She\'s clearly on another planet!!!
The 8 is the best handling car I\'ve ever had and the alfa\'s puring engine compared to the renisis sudenly turns into more of a grunt, as for the gt only being .3secs faster she couldn\'t have been driving the 8 to it\'s full potential
I say let clarkson do it again and then let\'s see what the time difference is
If it was a 350z I would say that was resonable but an alfa gt is an all round slower coupe than the 8!!!! (my brother in law own\'s one and even he didn\'t belive that put a smile on his face though but not mine :reallymad )

Might be a intresting head to head. I must agree the rx8 did get a bit of hard press and if she\'d spent a bit less time hanging the back end out the time would of been better.

If you are thinking of this because it’s cheaper to TAX a car of 1300cc then it’s not the case for a vehicle registered after March 2001. It’s now done in CO2 Emissions and the RX8 is VERY heavy on them.
See DVLA link to costs
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/taxation.htm
As far as I can see all this proves is that she is incapable of driving a RWD car, let them try again with someone who can.

That\'s just the showing off/having fun laps she doesn\'t do that on the fast laps - I doubt that much of the footage on he fast lap was taken while driving it. Particularly the pieces to camera during it!
And anyone who nay-says about the wonderful VBH - OUTSIDE NOW!!!
;)
cool...
downloading now :wiggle
thanks Glenn and Philip :chat
which season/ep is that? :D
she used to be a rally driver didn`t she?
I don\'t think Tiff would have gone round any quicker,I\'ve seen VBH race in many one make series and she\'s a pretty quick and consistant driver.
Anyone catch a previous 5th gear where they did a 24hr race at Silverstone and both RX-8\'s pulled out??
But - she does prefer torquey cars, and if the car doesn\'t suit a person\'s style, they won\'t get the best time out of it, end of!
Dunno why Tiff doesn\'t like them, thought a revvy handling car was right up his street. Then again he doesn\'t seem to like anything that wasn\'t built in the Black Forest.
I shall let you all know in the Spring ;)
The RX8s won the class at the Silverstone 24h, didn\'t they?
Jeeez, you\'d think the thing used oil by the gallon... I\'ve actually had a couple of friends with pretty mundane cars who had to admit that their cars use more oil than my RX8!,.,.
Also, I thought she was a bit over dramatic about the size of the steering wheel... anyone want to bet it\'s the same as that Alfa?? Realistically, a road car steering wheel doesn\'t get much smaller anyway... perhaps her problem was that the car feels more like a sportscar and she got carried away...

at the end of the day.......beetles are NOT in the same orientation as Mr2s or others. MID ENGINED mr2s are fantatsic cars, and great fun. The ideal weight distribution for handling being about 40:60 from to rear.
Porkas have always had the problem of being tail happy, especially the 911s.....
i dont think rex\'s are great cars either...why do you think they are used in drifting? because they are tail happy, all the weight in the front and none over the driven axle leads to lots of tyre smoke and controllable oversteer.
(end Quote)
Could this be the problem? That the balance is all wrongafter all? and there was me thinking Mazda had it right! perhaps that RX8 needs a bag of cement in the boot to make handle more like a porch! i think this sort of superior knowledge should be sent on to Mazda, just think how many cars they would sell then!
Bob
I thought the RX7 (FD) and the RX-8 had 50/50 weight distribution?
If the Brake bias was wrong then you would lock up the fronts too much or be heading for the nearest ditch in a hurry.
Just think 5th gear dont like the rotary. Tom was the only one who said anything good about it - just after he was putting it down!

Well thats what i thought Ricco! which is why they are so controlable for drifting etc. just going by what the guy said! perhaps he knows something Mazda doesn\'t,
Oh dear oh dear - all these car companies spending millions on perfecting 50/50 weight distribution and they have got it wrong all this time - if only they had channel 5 :rollin
[Homer Simpson On]Oh, that was sarcastic by the way!![Homer Simpson Off] :spank

The 911 is REAR-engined. Not mid.
And 40-60 is not ideal - that means the car will naturally oversteer, which leads to snappiness.
Tail happy cars are not actually very good for drifting, because, yes, you can put it sideways very easily, but sadly when you try to get it back straight it just goes the other way, and a tank-slapping we will go...
I know you all know that...
I did drive mine about 5 miles down a B-road with a 30kg bag of coal in the boot, and I got out and moved it into the passenger footwell as soon as I saw somewhere to pull up!
The steering wheel is very chunky, which makes it feel even bigger than it is, and I do think it\'s slightly larger than the average car - haven\'t measured it yet but I need to, so I can work out what size to buy ;)

Totally agree with you there!!!!! My friends too have said that there standard everyday family car(s) use around the same amount of oil as my 8 :eek , also thinking of all the cars I\'ve had over the last 5yrs and looking at friends cars the 8 definatly has the smallest steering wheel without a dought!!!!

Also you may not have noticed in that shootout they were using the 5 speed lower powered rx8 not the 6 speed one.
Well whats the point of putting them head to head! Bloody 5th gear! :D
Quote from: <--rYaN-->Also you may not have noticed in that shootout they were using the 5 speed lower powered rx8 not the 6 speed one.
What makes you think it was a 5 speed lower power model?
VBH quotes: 8200 Rpm, 231 BHP, top of the range model, when she is introducing the cars which would make it a 6 speed High Power
The only exterior difference between a lower and higher powered rx8 is that there are two squares under the headlights in the higher spec one for the headlight washers. If you look closely underneath the headlights on the beginning of this vid they dont have the squares underneath i dont think, unless its just the quality of the vid and my eyes are deceiving me :p ....
My mistake it was my eyes, got a good angle of it going round the track with the sun on the front and i saw the little buggars.... :D 6 speed it was!

You blaming my video captures  lol //www.specsavers.co.uk
Yeah it’s the damm filters Fifth Gear and also Top Gear use on their reviews. They also use progressive scan which I hate, but you can just make the washers out at the start :)
Philip
talkin of rx8`s i was at the lights yesterday iin my red fd when a metalic red lux rx8 pulled next to me, than a few moments later another standard red rx8 pulled next to her..they were both eyeing mine up thinking."hold on a bit, thats got the same wheels as mine" it was a rotary line up just waiting for the green light :3gears-rh :3gears-rh As the light turned amber she flew off just dying for me to see the rear of the rx8, whilst the other turned off left. I didn`t bother trying to race as it was a 2 lane right turn straight after the lights and also starting to frost up a bit.
Rx8`s are like busses but not in a bad way of course (no offence intended) you see non at all then you see 2 at the same time ;)
