Title: Maybe buying a 4th Gen RX7....? Any tips?
Post by: SiCook on August 30, 2003, 02:52:05 PM
This is my first post here so hello - I met some of you at Billing the other weekend, thanks for your time and patience.

Anyway, the questions...

I\'m buying an imported RX7 through a well known importer (Hurrahh!!!!  He\'s found one..!!!!).  He\'s found a car he describes as a RX7 Fourth Generation RS, 40K miles on the clock, 1996 car.

The car is stock apart from 18" BBS Forged Alloys, a different back section on the exhaust and a MazdaSpeed (?) gear lever knob!

I can just afford it if I live off bread and water.

What I want to know are the pros and cons of buying the RS vs. non-RS (?) versions of the car.  Particularly for insurance, comfort of ride, etc.  What are RS cars like...?  What do the RS\'s have that the non-RS\'s don\'t....?

I currently drive a modified MR2 Tubby that I take on track/airfield days in the UK and abroad.  I want a car that will replace the tubby (which is getting a bit long in the tooth) so if the RS gives tangible improvements in that respect over the non-RS model (still don\'t know what it\'s called) I\'ll get used to the diet (c:

As a minor point I like fettling with electronics and the like.  I\'ve been told the 4th Gen ECU is a 16bit processor but what I\'d like to know is techie information on it - is it OBDC 2, has anyone a tech sheet on the thing - and apart from processing power (do you need that for an ECU..?) what benefits/drawbacks are there with this unit?

Thanks in advance,
Si.

top tip ... you\'d better be Doctor Who or have the time circuits warmed up on the Delorean because the last RX7 built was a 3rd gen :)

Looks like what you were looking at is a 3rd gen RX7

Thanks - I saw the sticky article when I checked on my post - ho hum, next time I\'ll spend those extra few minutes looking around.

I am confused though, I\'ve got a few more details such as it has Bilstien suspension as standard (...?).

When I get the rest of the details through next week I\'ll check back and see what it really is.

I\'ll read through everything on the 3rd gen in the mean time (c:

Thanks,
Si.
