Title: V-mount or Front mount?
Post by: nikp on November 07, 2005, 09:59:48 AM
What is the better setup for rad/intercooler?

A V-mount kit, or a front mounted intercool?

Personally, I think a v-mount.  That way both the rad and the intercooler both get fresh air instead of the front mount blocking the rad.  The intake tract will be shorter if you go with a v-mount which should help response.

With a front mount the intercooler is pointing at the radiator, which in turn is pointing at the engine.  With a v-mount the radiator is pointing under the car and the intercooler upwards hopefully out of the huge vented bonnet you bought to go with the v-mount  :D  :D  :D

That\'s what i thought. I\'ve found a place that\'ll do me a V-mount kit specifially designed for the FD with everything included for £750 (Plus VAT) - this week only. I\'m very tempted, but I\'m waiting for photo\'s of the kit first.

£750 isnt a bad price, is it just the intercooler or do you get a new rad aswell? its has got to be a better set up than a front mount, have you not thought about a charge cooler?? they are around the same sort of money.

It includes a new rad too - that\'s why i figure its a good price. New rad, new intercooler, fixings, etc. Can\'t go wrong.....can I!?

Why not both, even more potential.

V mount is the best. The front mount is not such a problem on piston cars, because high water temp isnt generally a problem. But because the rotary runs hotter it is critical for the water temp to stay within tolerance.
The cost of V mounts has previously been a restrictive factor, although now we are doing the complete kit for £950 + VAT. This includes everything including aluminium Rad etc.

But Ross, those who have been running the Apexi front mount dont really suffer with temp issues. Or do you have information that questions that?

Just asking a question not trying to pick a fight. I like v-mounts.

With the V Mount the Water temps never become an issue.
I have always preferred the larger SMIC over a front mount because I have found the water temps can get to high on track or prolonged fast road use.
The V Mount now offers the best solution.

Nik,
Would this happen to be from Radtec? Reason I ask if my friend has one on his car, and when he has his single turbo fitted at WGT they found his intercooler had a 5psi drop across it, and it has to be sent back to Radtec to be modified. Apparently they have now re-designed the intercooler to get around these problems, so it might be best to check you are getting the new revised design, not the old one.

Chris

PS. If you post a pic up I can tell you if it looks like the one in my friends car.

i was thinking of going for a GReddy front mount with water injection on standard twins, would this see a big drop in temps?? and how much more power is this likely to generate??  with the charge cooler do you have one instead of a intercooler or aswell as?

I gave you an example above of the type of temps you should see. Its similar to the trust one. With WI i can get as low as ambiant ACT. Weter temps in the 80 deg which is spot on. As for performance 12.6 at 113MPH LOL More to come next year
