many threads on this subject, I think fro your description that you are filling the expansion tank on the left by the drivers side head light...

to check the cookant level when engine is col remove the rad cap in the centre of the car  or the one on the left as you look from the front of the car...  this should be up to the top or a couplke of inches below the top...  start the car with the cap off ans check there are no champange bubble coming up through the neck this checkes for good water seals

good luck and welcome

Bob the questions are not stupid! And with these cars you cnanot take any chance at all with the cooling system. Have you had the steam again?

The way to check the dipstick is to hold it up to the light, andyou can see water across the little slots.

On the passenger side we have the AST, the heater hoses, and 2 hoses on the intake where the throttle is. I suppose any of these could leak.

But you said valence? Do you mean right in the front of the car? If so, it could be the radiator leaking, (just had mine repaired).

mm cant see how an overflowing expansion tank would cause steam. It would ususally just run onto the ground from there.
Confused by this near-side off side stuff. What wrong with left and right? Yes, some people say "but then you have to say if you are looking forwards or backwards". Well. its always forwards because....

I have NEVER heard someone say "my car is right hand drive going forwards and left hand drive going backwards!"  :-)))

Hi Bob, just wondered if you over filled the expansion tank, if it overflowed on to the hot oil cooler, most FDs have two oil coolers i think, (my type X only has one!) perhaps the oil cooler was hot and steamed the excess water underneath the expansion tank!
Good luck, Another Bob

Sorry Bob forget that! just read your post again, its passenger side. could be the return small bore hose from throttle body, 21/2 inches left of the oil filter, mine leaked there, small tube at 90 deg angle pointing down towards bottom of engine joining on to a steel tube,
Bob
