Title: Looking at a Uk Rx7
Post by: Mazzyrx7 on November 05, 2005, 05:15:02 PM
Hi all

Been looking at a Uk spec Rx7 today. It looks like its been sitting there for sometime unused (it has a weed growing out of one the body gaps. Plus green sludge around rubbers and panel gaps). It\'s at a garage, but its not the sort of car they usually sell (Exotica is more there thing £50,000 / £200000 motors). The garage doesn\'t actually own the car, there selling it for someone how has moved abroad.

Bad points
* It\'s got 62000 miles on the clock with no rebuild.
* Its red and has started to fade in places.
* Backbox has a hole in it.
* Its not running very smoothly on idle.
* Sounded like it had a misfire when it was cold when revved
* A little smoky when started from cold lasted about 2/3 minutes then cleared
* Second turbo doesn\'t seem to come up to full boost all the time
* Its been sitting around for a good couple of months
* Dent / scrape on the sill between door and wheel arch
* Passengers window got stuck, but managed to get it up again after fiddling with the rubber window guide
* Drivers seats a little warn
* Rear window rubber seal has lifted at the bottom where it\'s joined together
* Front number plate plastic cracked in the corner
* Rear spoiler and wing mirrors need repainting
* Has a slow puncture on one tyre
* Has different tyre\'s front and rear

Good points.
* It doesn\'t have to many miles for a k reg 92 car.
* Starts easily from cold and when warm
* Seems to have a good service history.
* Completely standard

There\'s a for sale sign in the car and he has been trying to get £8500 for it

I have said about the price of the rebuild coming off the price of the car, £3500 for a starting point. He didn\'t seem overly concerned, but did mention having a compression test done on the car. But even if it comes back good, I\'m still not risking it and want the price of the rebuild knocked off the price.

I don\'t think it\'s worth a great deal in the state it\'s currently in. What would you guys think the cars worth?

Thanks

Tom

8500 blimey...not messing there is he... think he at least a couple of k over priced... if you look in the forsale section there are some very clean 94s with less miles on going for a lot less than that..not uk i know...but does it matter??... i would aviod it seems a heck of alot and doesnt sound that clean...maybe worth at looking at other options... i know my 450 single k27 rx wont be much more than that lol... just my opinion..ALl the best

Never a good sign when the bad bits on your list outweigh the good 3:1!!

Sounds a shade overpriced, pays to shop around.....and remember although uk a high spec model they have seen 13 UK winters and 13 years of crap weather on crap roads!! Check out imports b4 you buy.

Only my oppinion but!

Thanks for the comments. I would really like to get an import. But the insurance difference is stupid. Uk car £860, Import £1600. The difference in price is just stupid. I\'m only 21 so do find that insurance companies take the mick just a little. It\'s not like I\'m jumping from a 1 ltr micra to a Rx7. I\'ve been driving an Impreza Turbo for nearly 3 years and had a TVR 400se for 6 months. Plus I\'ve got 4 nearly 5 years no claims bonus\'s

That\'s why I\'m looking at getting a UK car. But if anyone knows anyway of obtaining a reasonable quote on an import, I\'m all ears.

The car isn\'t that bad, well nothing that can\'t be fixed with a little bit of money and some elbow grease.  I quite like a bit of a challenge. I also don\'t do many miles a year maybe 3000 max. I have seen that a well maintained non tuned one can last for up to 80K if your lucky. I pretty shore the car was been well looked after by the 3 previous owners, before the garage got there hands on it. The cars history is good and has always been serviced on time. The reason I\'m thinking of getting this one is that they don\'t seem to come up for sale to often, and when they do they\'ve been to the moon and back.

Thanks for all the help, but please keep it coming.

That quote was from elephant and the cheapest so fare. Most of the time its £3000+ or they refuse to quote.

TBH it sounds pretty mouldy overal - have you been able to look underneath at all? A lot of the UK cars are rusty, quite rusty in some cases and this one doesnt sound like its been looked after too well of late at least...

If it was £5.5K I\'d still be wanting the cost of a rebuild off of it I think - it doesnt sound as if its in very good nick overall and there are PLENTY of other FD\'s about which are likely a lot better purchase... the £800 extra on insurance wont go a long way to get the paint sorted, sill fixed, engine built, catback replaced, repair the drivers seat, puncture fixed etc.

Also, 62K isnt low miles - bare in mind that theres plenty of other worn stuff on the car like gearbox, shocks and bushes - none of which r going 2 b cheap...

Tricky to judge its value without a good look mate. Sounds like youd be well advised to get some one who know s abit about them to look it over if you get serious - doggy FDs are not just for xmas - they\'ll chew at your wallet all of next year too!!

HTH,
Rich

In the state it is I reakon its worth about £2k. Its already been said but here you go again, there are loads of better FD out there for as little as £6-7K for a decent car from one of the members.

Like people have said some good ones for around the 7k mark at the mo, so save yourself 1500, get a nicer car, use 800 to pay the extra insurance and the 700 to get an apexi pfc and decat pipe :)

I think as the others have said you can deffo get a much much better one than that for £8.5K.

I think if they are asking £8.5 for that rx they clearly know nothing about it.

If i were you i would hold on and keep searching for another UK rx7, might take a bit longer but will be worth the wait getting the right rx, if you get this sh!te one you will regret spending the money and be put off rx\'s all together.

Keep the faith matey,

Gurj :)

I\'d agree with all that\'s been said already; there are lots of good cars around, I\'d recommend keeping looking. And don\'t forget, that £800 insurance you think you\'re saving will go pretty quickly when you start fixing things :(

Gotta agree with all the above comment\'s, avoid it at all cost\'s. Will bring you nothing but heart ache and an empty wallet. Sounds harsh mate but there will be others popping up in better nick, be patient and the right one will come along. Not nice for anyone getting a bad Rex, think with you head and not your heart........cheers Leigh.

Thanks for all the help you\'ve posted.

I think I\'m going to try and get a better quote for an import, but I don\'t think I\'m going to get it much lower. So may have to wait for a uk car to come up for sale. I really can\'t see the point in spending £1600 on one cars insurance. As I could keep the Impreza and buy a Cosworth engined Dax Rush and could insure both of the cars for £1600. Then again, after driving the RX yesterday I\'m hooked.

I might offer the garage £2000 for the car, but I\'ve got a feeling that there not going to take that for the car. Your all right I don\'t want to be stuck with a dog of an RX.

These are the cars the garage sells. http://www.privatecollections.co.uk/admin/cars.asp I was having a look around the Koenigsegg they have in there. What a car! But I think the Gillets got to be the one I would have. Oh sorry i\'ve started dreaming again ;)

cheers

Tom

Wow! some seriously nice cars on that site, wouldn\'t mind a go in the XJ220   :chat

Mate, I reckon if you shop around you could get an standard imported RX7 with a recent rebuild for under £7k. Plus your £1,600 for the insurance and that brings you to roughly the cost of this UK one you\'re looking at.

Best of luck mate. I\'d recommend buying from someone on this forum, you\'ll get yourself a car that\'s been well looked after.

Cheers

What\'s your insurance going to be like for the second year? I mean if it\'s the same then that totals £3200 over 2 years

Although after saying that i\'m afraid that I do agree that you should go for an import rex! Just phone EVERY insurance company.  I know the rex qualifies for classic insurance type policy, but do you have to be 25?
