Title: Should I get a rex?
Post by: JapClass on November 02, 2005, 09:21:24 PM
I\'m currently debating getting an RX7, S14a, R32GTR or... something else! haha, bare with me.

The car will be used for a daily driver so has to be reliable, does the RX7 fall under that category? Is the nightmare fuel economy of the 7 really true, sub 20mpg? I don\'t mind in the 20\'s tbh.

Also I\'m not sure which model to get, the codes confuse me with all this talk of \'FD\' and ... stuff. :D So which is the best and why, puerly a spec thing or are the engines different?

Sorry for the newb questions but I\'m really not sure which path to take, so opinions of those with experience of driving their 7 on a regular basis would be cool. Thanks.

Hello :)

fuel economy is definately true, sub 20, hell sub 10 if your in a real hurry :D generaly get about 250ish miles out of a full tank.

FD is a reference to the chassis number, FD\'s are the latest shape or 3rd generation, FC\'s are 2nd generation (pre 91) and FB\'s were the one before that.

I dont drive my rex on a daily basis so cant really help with that...but hope this helped a little :)

If fuel economy is a major concern I reckon the s14a would be your best bet, as i imagine the gtr is a fairly thristy monster, although s14 will be the slowest of the 3 (relatively speaking)....

On thing good about the rex is the prices seemed to have taken a dive lately, wish I was buying one now...glad im not selling tho

:wave  Welcome to MRC :D

An Rx7, regardless of its generation will put a huge smile on your face, but they are thirsty if you push them.  Low teens seems to be an average for those that do small journeys or like to give them a lot of the loud pedal, but over long journeys 24mpg is possible, I think some people have had more?

24mpg sounds fine to me.

I got my 1.6 Civic vti down that low on some commutes but I did redline (8400rpm) in every gear.

How bigs the fuel tank in an FD?

Should I opt for a Type-r, I take it they are higher spec? I definately need a/c or climate, that in the spec?

have a read through this (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=394)  mate, should answer a few questions, or confuse the hell outta ya! Japs made loads of models with minor differences, uk spec is fully loaded, majority should have air con if not all? rz might not as its sort of a pure race model...no frills, better brakes, etc

I would say that there are deffo some people on here that use the RX7 for everyday travel, i used to do this last year but found the suspension annoying after a while, if you get a decent rx with a decent setup it will prove quite comfy. At the mo we have 3 cars so the rx is stood still most of the time  :)

PS- whereabouts in the East Midlands are ya matey, i\'m in Derby ?

I have both an FC TII and an R32 GTR (well, its hubbys, best add that bit lol).. and they are drasically different cars.. so it all depends on what you are looking for in a car... Fuel consumption isnt so different between our two, but the big noticable obvious differences are the GTR WILL seat 4 adults at a push, the Rex you have no hope. The GTR is 4WD, so very solid on the road and better behaved in the wet, and Rex is RWD so can be a little twitchy on the twisties, which can be a fun thing if you are that way inclined... so which car we get in all depends on what we are doing...  I\'ve never had a S14, so wouldnt wish to comment.. but both cars have the grin factor once you park your butt in the seat and turn the key, and both will get people legging it outside McD\'s to come take a phone camera shot.. but they are as different as chalk and cheese... either way.. you\'re on to a winner :)

Dont be thinking youll get it to hit 24 mpg.  It might do that entirely on a motorway at <3000 rpm.  Id normally expect around 15mpg, though im sure mine doesnt even get that.

Costs just over 60 quid to fill the tank.  Does about 200 miles  :eek

Sorry this is wrong. I constantly get about 20 - 21 on the motorway at 85 mph, which I think is a bit over 3k rpm. I use the cruise control a lot, and I think this helps.

Its not wrong, its what my car gets  :(

Ive only ever got over 20MPG once and that was following my mate back from manchester who was running an FD in so pretty slow.

As a rough indication for mpg figures on a single turbo\'ed FD.

I have got 23-24 mpg cruising between 3000-3500 rpm on a trip covering 200 miles with the odd nailing on the straights. Cost me £45 in fuel.

On the way back I gave it some hard driving and that cost me £75.  ;)

Gives you an idea.

So if its what your car gets, is every FD the same?  My car is red, therefore all fd\'s are red?

I see your signature says non-sequential, does your car have any modifications.

Freddy says he constantly gets between 20 - 23 mpg, so why cant JapClass expect to get 24 mpg once in a while?

I was using it to point out some variation rather than someone posting up 24 and the new guy automatically thinking 24mpg is possible.

Funnily enough I know loads of people with FD\'s.  I dont know any of them that claim anywhere near and average of 24mpg.  I dont think I know anyone averaging over 20 and most are lower than that.  Theres been enough threads on here of people posting mpg figures if someone wants to go back and refernce some.

And funnily enough Freddys 24mpg was cruising at 3000-3500 rpm on a 200 mile trip.  Thats hardly CONSTANT 24mpg.  I got over 20MPG cruising up a motorway for 200 miles too but its nowhere near my typical mpg of 13-15 ish.

And yeah my car has a Knightsport ECU, which will obvisouly make a difference somewhere of other to MPG.

persoannly I would buy a rex out of those three...

reasoning is that...
1 THEY ARE GREAT
2 THEY LOOK GREAT
3 THEY DRIVE GREAT
4 THEY HANDLE GREAT
5 THEY ACCELERATE GREAT
6 THEY STOP GREAT
7 THEY DRIFT GREAT
8 NOT MANY OF THEM AROUND ( though this is increasing)
9 IT IS A PROPER SPORTS CAR

dont buy any of the three if youa re worried about fuel consumption... though I have got 400 miles of a tank of fuel... motorway and A road driving...

most it ahs cost me to fill up is 71 quid..(@98.9p/l). that was after a long trip and the light has just come on.. ( I apoligise to those who feel I have sinned by letting the fuel tank get this dry)

realiability is good remember yo might be buying a ten year old car so there will be things that need changing/renewing...same with any car.

mine is a 93 and have no major work done... apart from inlet manifold gasket ( cost 900 quid to fix)

get it checked by a specialist or buy from a specialist..  good section in here about buying a rex and what to look for...

and finally....

look into my eyes not around my look into my eyes... you\'re under... you will believe by buying a rex you will be doing the best thing in the world and will never hear a bad word said against it... you will be happy with circa 20mpg and will have great pleasure in filling it up all the time..3..2..1... you\'re back in the room

hope that helps

Thanks for your help so far. Theres a nice black 92 with only 40k on the clock near me, hopefully its still available as I\'ll be wanting a test drive with intent to purchase. Wish me luck! :D

Got a good insurance quote from elephant, I\'ve just turned 23 and they quoted £712 FC.

That is a really good insurance quote, too.

I live in a very good area and have 5+ years of clear driving with no claims (touch wood). ;)

I should say that the quote was limited mileage of up to 5000, I wont be using the car all day everyday as I will buy a second car for work.

I\'ve just done 280 miles on £50 (3/4 tank) of Optimax. Not sure what that comes out to in mpg but I thought it was pretty reasonable.

I\'ve only had the car 4 days and I\'m loving it!  :rollin

I\'d definitely buy a rex, the S14 and R32 are showing their age IMO

You would have to be well off or very dedicated to drive one every day IMHO. Same with an R32 GTR, expensive to run in my experience. Best to buy a sh1tter for the weekand have an FD for the weekends, they are the best Japanese sports cars in existence from my experience.

Hmm, close call between the NSX and the RX7 I would say. ;)

hey im just new here. ive recently just sold my nissan pulsar gtir in favour of an rx7, just not 100% what makes a good one! as for fuel consumption, i got around 220miles from a full tank (around £50). the only problem with buying a rex is, it seems most sell with around 40000miles on the clock, and do they not normally need rebuilding at 60000ish?? which is about £2500?! not sure if im totally correct on that one though.

Rebuild time is hard to calculate hence the 60K figure that is branded about, if your cars engine has been well looked after theres no reason it cant make over 80K before requiring the rebuild, also all depends on mods too if its running high power say 450bhp + then the life span will be shorter due to more wear.

Rebuild cost can be from £2500 - £4500 depending on what you get done and where you go,

Hope that helps,

Well for what it\'s worth, I\'ve been driving my FD every day for the last 2 years - 3 in May.

Now got 49K on the clock, starts first time every time.

Around town I get around 160-170 miles a tank to almost empty. I can easily get 24mpg on the motorway - in fact I got that before I had my Power FC fitted and mapped. It\'s better than that now. The secret on long trips is to keep the secondary injectors off. I need to do this as it\'s 350 miles one way to WGT for a service!

There are many more sensible ways to get around but I am not sensible enough to use any of them!

thanks martiny, i shall keep that in mind. dont think theres many companies up this way that specialize in the rotary engine so that might be a slight problem! but it doeesnt put me off in any way.

im stuck wether to get a white one or grey. but i\'ll have a good look around and see whats going.

how do you do a compression test on the engine? i.e, if i go down south to buy one, will the garage have the equipment to do this for me while im there, unless it has already been done and the owner has proof of result.

god i just want to get out there and buy one.
ps. i stay in fife

Just my ha\'penny worth;
Don\'t get hung up on the spec / colour you want; just get the best car you can. They are all great cars, you\'ll miss rear seats (for example) far less than the contents of your wallet if you end up with a bad one :(

I know the desire to get out and buy one can be strong, but have a look at quite a few before you part with your cash, alternatively get someone who knows their way around the cars to go with you, even a bad one can feel quite good to the uninitiated......
