Title: Compression test
Post by: leggysrx7 on October 30, 2005, 10:48:50 PM
Hey

Looking for some advice. I\'m trying to sell my FD, and have been asked to get a compression and pressure test done. Compression test was done in November last year with high 7\'s around all the chambers on a cold engine.

My question is simply how good are Mazda dealers for this test? Previously i used \'The Garage\' in Wishaw who borrowed one from Carl but unfortuately that has been returned...any suggestions? Any ideas of cost and are they likely to mess something up?

The car runs perfectly well from hot/cold, no water loss, spluttering, excess smoke from exhaust etc but i\'m being asked for a compression test and really can\'t afford to drive her down to Pips....

Any advice welcome

Marc

high 7\'s isnt toooooooo bad i suppose

the pressure test is a really good test - it tests the water seal ( i think )  which are more likely to fail than the tips

Pressure test- is that when after the car has been driven you slowing loosen the two metal caps (very technical) and check for bubbles and after a short period of time there should be what??

I tried FOUR mazda dealers in Scotland with no luck, three of them not having the equipment to do a compressions test..the other one looking for information on what an rx7 is and why you\'d compression test...what a joke!!!!

Next step would be Pip\'s as he is the closest, any ideas on price?

Thanks

Marc

Quick question Grinder, what did you mean by "high 7\'s isnt toooooooo bad i suppose"???

I\'m trying to sell my FD to someone who hasn\'t owned one before and may now be a little more unsure what to do as he is a member here.

High 7\'s is good but the fact the comp test was done when cold it wom\'t be an accurate figure of teh true compression.

7\'s arent tooo bad !

i have seen FD running fine on low 6\'s

and running like crap on high 9\'s

like i said high 7 arent too bad :D

and if all the figures on each rotor are close then thats a better sign ( for example Front Rotor 7.6 , 7.6 , 7.7 - thats a good sign , a bad sign is 7.5,7.6,4.2 )

that my opinion i suppose

and a pressure test - this is what i have been told by a tuner .. and it was a long time ago .. BUT something like

1 - remove rad cap
2 - lock on a pressure cap
3 - pressurise the WHOLE system to something like 9bar ( yup that high )
4 - come back in 2-3 mins .. see what pressure the system still has - if its dropped to say 1 bar - then the water is escaping round the seals... rebuild time is looming
5 - if its still at 9bar then the seals are holding fine

the guy told me that he would happily sell a car with mid 6 compression readings ASLONG as the pressure test was spot on

its very unusual that you throw a tip - usually a seal breaks down first

my egi did a similar thing - ran like a dream but a side oil seal was shot - and drank 1 litre of oil every couple of hundred miles

i hope this makes more sense ???

i wasnt trying to ruin your sale

Stu

pip - not sure if he does the pressure test to be honest ?? and price ... i have NO idea ... i do all the work on my own car - it will never go any where near a tuners place - i cant afford it

Cheers Grinder,

I\'ll maybe get my garage to do the above and phone the possible buyer direct and see if this would be good enough...

The car was stone cold when compression was previously done, would that mean i could expect a high figure, the chambers where all 7.8 or 7.9 can\'t remember exactly which where which but very even in all of them...

Thanks again for you input

all i know about the compression test is that my FC haynes manual says do it at normal operating temp

although i have no idea why ?? - unless it is so that all the metals have expanded to their correct sizes and that the rotors are oiled up ???

7.8 and 7.9 is near 8 at the end of the day !!

on a NEW REBUILD i would expect 9\'s ( but thats just me :D ) , i suppose its then how the engine is treated ??? - correct warming and cooling periods and oil changes are necessary !! ( and i have been told that keeping the antifreeze levels correct is important as this stops internal corrossion - but not sure on that to be honest !?!?!?  )

good luck with the sale though

i keep looking at FD\'s and i must stop !!

Rebuild was done in 2003 at the previous owners expense ;)

Think since i\'ve owned her i\'m become a paranoid owner...things like not realising that i had parked in a puddle returning and thinking \'oh f$#*\'.....or missing the oil filler cap then two days later thinking...\'theres an oil spill on my driveway..oh f$#*\'..

i keep looking at FD\'s too, even though i own one...there\'s some very nice examples out there.

i know what you mean i really do !!  - paranoid isnt the word

i need to stop looking - i own 2 already !! - but one more cant hurt :D

there are some sexy ones around - there is a single turbo for sale on here for about 8K i think , then at the other end one at 4.4K , then another one at 4K ( its not on here but the previous owner is !! )

i keep trying to convince myself that i dont need and FD and i should stick with the FC\'s :D

!!! Pressure test at 9bar? I thought that Mazda dropped the system pressure from 1.3 down to 0.9 bar to avoid damaging the side seals... if you test the water system at 9 bar, isn;t there a risk of causing the seals to fail?

Just for info - Pip has done a compression test on my FD, so he has the technology.

It does meke me laugh when people at a Mazda garage look like a rabbit caught in the headlights when you turn up in an RX-7!   :D  :D  :D   I was asked by one salesman what make the car was!  :rollin  Although the girl who worked at the same one (my local mazda) was very nice  ;)  and knew all about the car :)

Well you should try arriving in an RX-2 then !!  :-))

SORTED!

There\'s a garage in EK called Cartek, they have a mini compression tester, so looks like i\'ll get the compression checked on the FD..yipee! That should help my sale :(

Thanks for all the information
