Important question - are the stock Japanese fuels unsuitable for UK fuel on a stock bog standard FD3S engine?
Reason I ask is that I had a buyer for a car (not sure that he was a serious buyer though). He wanted to view other FDs as well so I sent him home via a rotary specialist who I knew had some stock to sell.
Anyway, my reason for this post is because later that evening I got a call from the potential buyer. He called to say he was no longer interested. The reason he was no longer interested is because the specialist had told him that all Jap import FD3Ss, regardless of mileage, need to be rebuilt straight away because the Japanese Mazda seals are not suitable for UK fuel.
I don\'t intend to start flame wars, but I have had heaps of FD3Ss now. A couple I have had rebuilt as the engines needed it, but the others were compression tested, showed good readings, and have been running faultlessly as daily drivers and for trackdays for a good couple of years. One, the buyer has covered over 20000 miles in the last year alone, using Esso and Texaco Super, and has not had so much as a hiccup. Now this is on Japanese Mazda seals, running UK fuel. None has had problems with det causing damage. Only one has gone pop and that because the owner forgot to replace the coolant filler cap.
Thanks.
Pete
I would hazard a guess the majority of companys rebuilding RX7 engines in the UK are using imported JDM apex seals. We (RE:Worx) do 99% of the time, and I can tell you for a fact that a few others do too...
Sounds to me as a money making exercise :reallymad
Would have thought logic would dictate that as these engines were originaly made in Japan, all the seals ect would orginate from said country???????
Only difference [afak] in the Jap fuel to the UK is ours is sh1t, shame the guy was put off by a so called \'rotary specialist\'.
Well, i\'ve just imported mine earlier this year, hasn\'t had a rebuild yet. Was running fine on UK fuel and jap seals.
Sounds to me like the dealer wanted to ensure that the guy bought a rex from him directly (with a rebuild - and therefore more expensive!) and to avoid private sales!
If anything jap fuel is a much higher octane and so how can putting less power through cause more damage????
B*llocks. Who was the specialist? They are obvoiusly deranged.
Hopfully the guy and the vendor are on the MRC forum and will see the error of their statements
I have a customer who has done 90,000 miles on a stock new engine I put in his car,and still going strong.Only UK fuel, unleaded, not super unleaded.Stock engines like the lower octane.Higher octane, like available in Japan will give you no more power, just costs more.
Are you sure the buyer wasnt feeding you a line \'cos he didnt have a big enough spine to say "I\'m no longer interested" ?
Failing that I\'d like to know who said it and what their reasoning was! :yes
I wonder if the potential buyer just got the wrong end of the stick.
If you run the Jap car on UK fuel then it can potentially detonate easierand cause the engine to go pop and then need a rebuild - wonder if he just assumed a rebuild would fix this problem?
2p spent! :D

I have a jaop import fd and use optimax likle everyone else on here ( apart from a few ) I am assuming that I could use the lower octane fuels if I had my ecu ( stock ) remapped to use 95ron instead of 98ron... are the jap imports used to getting 100ron as jap fuel....
or am I just confused?...
Maybe the potential buyer has got himself muddled up and never understood what the seller was saying.
Just a thought????
Nah, from speaking to the guy he hasn\'t misunderstood what he was told, he has purely been misled.
I\'m well aware of fuelling issues with Jap imports, and this again is a contentious issue as some people will give the impression that all Jap imports need remapping to run on UK fuel. This ain\'t necessarilly so.
But with this seals thing.....
If you sent the potential buyer to the specialist then give them a call and see what they were on about. Then name and shame :D
There\'s a 28,000 miler for sale on here which I am soooo tempted to get! :cool
I\'d never name and shame Kieron as it tends to stir up massive cans of worms especially if there\'s been some "wrong end of the stick" confusion, and people need to make their own minds up once they have done their research. That\'s why I\'d prefer whoever to just explain their reasons for saying what they did. If they have read this then they will know if this is directed at them, but if they don\'t want to explain anything then fair enough. They may just rethink what they recommend in future in which case, job done.
I\'m keeping quiet on it now anyway.
Ricco, there is indeed a very nice 28000 miler in the for sale section
