as an everyday car? what sort of mpg do you get on a full tank, aiming at people with Fd\'s.
I do, although I dont need to, It\'s walking distance to work so I normally end up driving around for a while to make sure its up to temp before turning it off.
I\'ve only ever filled it up when doing motorway driving, but never bothered to check the MPG, I alredy know its crap :p
IIRC if you get a decent map on your ecu you get better MPG, if you havent done already, get an Apexi ECU
I use mine daily, and I must be mad, but I love it so :chat
I see between 12 and 15mpg to a tank around town, although I am slightly modified :chat
Take today for example, £60 = 198 miles 14.8mpg, but that includes a steady run to scr and a few trips up the strip :evillaugh
Hope that helps :chat
Glad you guys use it daily, its really making me want one more and more, kieron you used to own an mr2 befor? from mr2oc? So my last problem really is, how old are you all and what is your insurance like?
Sorry to say yes I did, never again thouh :reallymad bloody car LOL
I\'m 21 and pay Just over £1000, insurance is cheap for me cos I was driving a modified MR2 turbo @ 17 and have never claimed so they go easy on me.
IMO to run your 7 as a \'daily drive\' you either have to have the money to do it, remember you\'re putting miles on your car that will bring the inevitable rebuild closer, or you have to be a bit mad or simply addicted to driving your 7.
I\'m the later, most owners are all or a combination of the above :)
Cheers
Jon

Nice same as mate, just got n/a mr2 though, how reliable you finding the 7? and how much did you pay for it, with how many miles ect. If I wanted one should I just buy a standard car?
Mine was £8000 with a rebuilt street ported engine. chasis had done 56000miles.
I\'ve now done about 4000miles + 4 drag days getting in over 20 runs and its been very reliable. Until now, but its probably my own fauly for running an ecu with an AFR of low 12 :spank
P.S Mr Blair, I\'m an addict, I\'ve had 2 daily runners and just couldnt not drive the RX
so if I was to buy one try and go for one thats had a rebuild.
stay away from the 4-5 ones with 50-60k on clock?

I only do about 12 miles a day so that side of things is not too bad, I gave up smoking last year and that more than pays for the extra juice :cheers
But you are absolutely right I think with my twin plate clutch and 1.5way I\'m definately in the latter catagory too !!! :burnout :rollin :evillaugh
Bear in mind if you modify it with nice expensive bodykits and GT wings you won\'t want to leave it anywhere for fear of it getting pinched!
Thats my biggest problem, I normally end up using my brothers car for trips to the shops etc.. mines to low and wide I can\'t even get in a multistory carpark lol!! Makes me laugh as I can\'t even get it to my mates carpark so I have to leave it parked up down the road... oh dear...! :(
Yeah go for a 96 plus car unless you want to replace bushes etc.. 50-60 is fine if the price is low enough and you can still afford the rebuild, you at least get to choose who does the build and can know it hasn\'t been booted during the run in period which will get you used to the car gradually.
i used my FD for 6 months everyday until i took it off road to rebuild, generally getting 200 miles per tank.
my daily drive now is a 4.0 litre xj6 which is actually better on juice :D
when peolple ask how much MPG i get i just say my other cars an rx7 and they say \'OH well nevermind\'
I use mine daily. I do about 1000 miles per month in it and average about 20-22mpg. All my driving is cross country though, so if you do a lot of town driving the economy will suffer. Fuel is pretty expensive, but these cars were built for driving :D My car is running an Apexi PFC at 0.9bar peak with a full de-cat.
I use mine daily, though i have a short trip to work. I get around 220 miles to a tank of Optimax, which IIRC is £63ish.
Works out at about 15mpg average since i\'ve owned it.

22mpg !!! :eek
I cant better 17mpg even on the friggin motorway (may be something to do with the fact that I cannot sit between 60 and 85 as it\'s too fduking boomy from my zorst, so I can cruise around 55 or 90+ mph)
If I wanted an economical car, I would not have bought a rx :chat

I think that\'s the perfect quote ;)

Im the same. About 1000 a month and around 20+ mpg when I restrain my right foot! I usually get over 200 miles from £50.
Scary how much I have spent on petrol in the first year of ownership, but well worth it :D
Sounds ok, would get a crappy run around for work then and use it for weekends, What sort of price are you looking at for a rebuild? I called up a place cant remember the name atm, they said £3500, is this overpriced? I think it was a total rebuild as engine had blown.
Also on the 92 models, whats the quality like of them, say if i went for standard car, Initial-d said about the bushes what are parts prices like for 7\'s?
Just trying to get my head round it all.
Quotewhat are parts prices like for 7\'s?
depends what parts you\'re after, and whether you want new or second hand!
Mostly pretty expensive though, but some parts can be reasonable. But you won\'t find cheap!
Quote from: nikpdepends what parts you\'re after, and whether you want new or second hand!
New parts I guess or used, are parts easy to find or do you have to get stuff sent from oversea\'s.
Generally, i find parts are very easy to find. Most of the specialists have second hand parts lying around, and their prices aren\'t preposterous. If you\'re looking for parts to tune, then it starts getting expensive.
Quote from: probedbI think that\'s the perfect quote ;)
I 2nd that also :D
I use it fridays, weekends and whenever I can find an excuse.
Getting about 20mpg, but have just finished running in a rebuld by Rotechniks after 72K
Previous owner had the car 3 weeks when the engine went and he couldn\'t afford the rebuild cost.
Insurance is expensive. Shop around. Get someone who knows Rex\'s to check it out before u buy it.
when i got mine from southampton, the petrol tank was empty so i put £30 worth of normal unleaded in.( i realize now to use optimax only :spank ) I reached 140mph on the motorway and it did have more go but i chickened out as your overtaking cars like they`re going backwards. Thinking about it, it was a dumbass thing to do reaching that speed in a car i had been driving for half hour. I got to birmingham and i needed to fill the tank again, so basically i travelled 130+ miles on £30 fuel reaching 140mph with an average of 80mph.
They are very addictive to drive and are made for driving, but i will take mine off the road when the salt starts being spread.
Mine is used daily too. I reckon I average 17-18MPG with a mixture of motorway and town driving. If you have a heavy right foot and use the full rev range that can easily drop below 10 tho. On a long motorway run it can be over 20 if your cruising at a sensible speed. TBH I haven\'t worked it out for a while tho as I always found myself working out how much I would have saved if I still had my Clio Williams or another sensible car.
A rebuild can cost anywhere from a bit more than £2k to more than £4k dependent on how much damage has been done and what parts need replaced. When the engine is apart a lot of people take the opportunity to have the engine ported and other mods done so the cost can build quite considerably.
Best tip I have for you is buy the car you want (i.e. mods done already) as it can be very expensive upgrading parts and heavily modified cars are not that much more expensive to buy second hand. An engine rebuild is also good peace of mind but make sure it was done by a reputable source. Buying a cheaper one and having a rebuild done yourself is definately a good option but remember other parts will be on there way out and can be expensive (like Initial D said suspension bushes for the rear alone there are 12 at £50ish each)
If you can afford it the RX7 is an amazing car, with so many mods that you can do as you gain more confidence (or more money) so it should keep any power hungry car enthusiast happy for years. I know for me the only time I\'ve even thought about selling was when I was told it was needing a rebuild (on top of what was already a big bill). But when I thought about it, what is there to replace it with. Nothing with the same blend of power, handling, looks and fun at a similar price. Unless you know better than me.
Barry
like most people i get around £60ish = 200ish miles ....
when i do trips to car shows .. i find 85mph is a good speed for mine and i can get 280 miles from a tank .
Quote from: Sy.i find 85mph is a good speed for mine and i can get 280 miles from a tank .
I\'m just conserving fuel and reducing carbon emissions officer, honest!
;¬)
I did 330 miles from a tank of fuel... 71 quids worth... well 71 quid @99.9p/L
I reckon if you started M5 @ exeter and went all the way up the m5 M42 M6toll M6 as s far as you could go you would get 400 miles from a very full tank...thats sticking at about 80 all the way
A recent trip to southampton from bristol i made in my FD i calculated i got 24mpg out if it - which i was very chuffed with!
I use mine daily, but only do about 80 miles per week, which equates to about £30 of petrol, but through work i can claim my mileage to and from work which helps.Besides who would want to drive anything else when you have a RX.
haha damn it you people are making me really want one, from what you lot say though they dont sound as bad as people make them out to be, and sound pretty reliable.
Ok for my final question does Birmingham host any good places that could look and work on a 7?
I use mine every day at the moment but want to find something else to use over the winter. Just some little run about would be nice so the 7 doesnt get covered in crap and chiped to death by stones. Plus i\'d like to try and save some cash for some changes to it over the winter and spring time for next years shows!
I dont do that many miles a week but i\'d perfer to only use mine for better journeys than just to work. I think then i would enjoy the drives even more than i do now, and i would have to worry about putting so many miles on it. I think you can get used to driving them every day and kinda forget how specail they are. If you were to only drive it now and again you\'d realise how fast and powerfull they are and how slow other cars seem to be :rollin
Adam
Birmingham isn\'t a million miles away from WGT (Which is near liverpool and manc). Pip charges a lot per hour, but then he manages to fix your problem twice as fast as any other garage would (Probably faster!), so the price is economical anyway!
I got my RX in 2003 and for 2 years it was used every day as a daily drive ,only had 2 issues in those 2 years , first was the radiator split (common issue with the plastic end caps) and a small engine fire due to perished fuel lines (small damage iirc it come to about £250 to fix)
Then in May this year the engine finally gave up on 80K (on first engine) so it had a good life (also it was modified aswell) i have just got it back with its rebuild and im running it in now, ive done about 650 miles under 3K with no boost and this has to be the hardest thing ever :( knowig that i probally need to do about another 1K before i can have some fun is hard :(
But in the long run it will be worth it :yes
I use mine everyday. From a full tank I get about 250 miles. I only live about 8 miles from work so I\'m not sure I\'m getting the most efficiency out of it. Also there isn\'t very many places to boot it on the way, so I guess that helps!
Having bought and RX7 , I couldn\'t possibly imagine driving another car, I absolutely love it.
Regular drive for 6 years..yes, i must be slightly mental...
Conditions...slow town traffic plus short motorway blasts
Average fuel-- 190miles per tank, which is now £50-60 squid!! :eek
BUT, i only average 8,000 miles per year.
My car must be female, otherwise i wouldn\'t love it!! :spank :flamed

There is a garage in Birmingham that re-builds and works on RX-7\'s, but i wouldn\'t consider him a specialist in the same league as Pip or Ross at Dragon. His name is Chang and he is at Optimum Auto\'s in Mosely. Worth going to see him to check over the looks of the car, but i take mine to Ross for any work (near Honiton - but worth the trip).
If you just want to have a look at one, i\'m based in Redditch so you can always come and have a look, although bear in mind that mines heavily modded (and the 2nd turbo still hasn\'t been fixed yet!)

I regularly use mine for the commute to work which is 65 miles each way, mostly motorway with a little A road fun thrown in. I am usually stuck at 50 -60 MPH on the motorway an have seen 24 MPG as a result. I have recently installed a PFC and not really noticed much diffference in fuel consumption. Short trips round town really hurt the fuel consumption, but then I use my little run around for that.
Keith
i agree with ada 7 that using everyday spoils the car some what.
But my consumption is not very good very lucky to get 150 to a tank but that is because everytime i take mine out cannot help myself absolutely caning it over the mountain which obviously means mpg suffers but hey you cant have it all i think most people if they were on a autobahn or like here a road with with no speed limits they would be the same.
Hope you get one soon and welcome to the club.
Last year i was using the rx every other day for usual things,
This year probably once or twice a year as bought a cheaper can for city driving.
Only use mine at weekends. Use a bus the rest of the week so I always look forward to using the 7.
However if we are going somewhere dodgy or a friends house where you can only park on the road we take the missus car !!!! lol

Hmmmmm
Real tough decision I have each mornin\'
:chat
No prizes for guessin\' the result !!
I know mate.... tell me about it !!
Luckily I have an IPOD to keep me amused and to stop me listening to the schoolkids !
Why oh why do they have their phones on too loud ?!!!?
Would love to use it also but I work in the centre of Norwich and its expensive to park in a decent car park. Plus I reckon the parking dents on my car would breed like rabbits if I left it in a car park all the time !!!!
Gareth
i\'ve used mine as a daily driver since May, but only notched up 3000 miles since i don\'t live too far from work. I didn\'t buy it to gawp at! Fuel consumption? who cares!!
ash
I bought mine about 2 years ago as my every day sensible car( or atleast that what i told myself) and I get about 190 miles to a tank but most of my trip to work is down fast twisty b roads. :D

Well, i\'ve just got myself another car so mine\'s no longer my daily drive.
Didn\'t want to use it in the snow and crappy weather, so i set out to get a cheapo runaround.
Ended up with a \'106 Rallye 1.3, totally standard apart from white compomotive alloys and a Magnex back box. Holy crepe is this thing fun!!!
Also means i can now put the Rex on a classic policy, woohoo!
I\'ll post pics of the Rallye up when i can be arsed, its awesome!!!

A wicked might have to take you up on that offer, do you have a contact number for chang? Its just down the road from me so that would be perfect. Thanks for the reply everyone. I never been in a 7 but from seeing them fly by me on the motorway and watching getaway in stockholm 5 I have fallen in love with them.

You must be lucky i think i have only ever seen 1 other rx7 on the motorway and that was going the opposite way :eek obviously convoy\'s dont count otherwise we did one to chesterfield with 14 rx7\'s in a row :D

there\'s about 3 round my way which i spotted, One nice black low one with no spoiler, black one with spoiler, another black one with multi spokes and low to the floor to, then there is a red one which i seen a couple of times.
I\'m still running my engine in and did Chigwell to West London and West London to Mid Wales on just over half a tank, I was shocked. Mind you, I wasn\'t taking it over 3/3500 rpm and my second lot of injectors don\'t kick in till 4000. The petrol is a small price as I can say that it was breaking my heart watching Ford Fiestas and other various economy cars over taking me with nobs behind the wheel thinking they\'re fast!
The car did, however, start to cain the fuel around town once I was there...shame, bring on hydrogen horsepower!
I use a twin turbo RX7 daily and single turbo during the weekends. Both are as practical as one another with a decent, streetable clutch. As long as the essentials are mainted i.e let the car warm and cool down properly, regular servicing. Then you should not encounter any real problems.
On average, around town fuel consumption is 180 miles to a full tank. However, when on the motorway. I can quite easily get 320 miles to a full tank.
That said, I have done over 10000 miles on the RX this year combined. Think 2006 will see a cheap diesel. :)
That\'s only around the £2700 mark Freddy!
well, did a long run to Cambridge and back over the weekend, and worked out the fuel consumption. Fair enough, i was heavily boosting as much as possible, and had a great laugh, so it was worth it, but dang! 17.76 mpg !!!
hehehe that was 320 miles to the tank of optimax. its like, wow! thats excellent price compared with rides at Alton Towers!
ash
LoL sounds good
