Hi im new here, I have loved FD 7s for awhile now, but I cant afford to run one or insure one atm, but I have since come across the FB 7\'s which I think look cool.
The thing I wanted to find out is, do these need a rebuild every 60k? and what are service and parts cost\'s like on these?
Other thing is as the 7\'s engine smaller are they an easy engin to work on if a noobie wanted to learn.
Hopefully not asking to much for my first post :D
Cheers
Alessio
Hello and Welcome :wave
I owned an FB when i first started my facination with RX7\'s, in answer to your questions;
The rebuild figure is never set in stone and you will find with an FB it should last a bit longer than that providing it has been looked after but then again owning an rotary powered car is always a bit of a gamble.
I alway found parts quite cheap (apart from the exhaust) because i tended to get reconditioned parts from people like Jimmys. Small services are better to do yourself, with larger services i can\'t remember how much i paid.
An FB engine is very simple providing you know a bit about rotaries.
Sounds cool, thanks for the reply. I own an mr2 at the moment and people been telling me not to go for a rotary, how reliable would you say they are? What sort of things to look out for with the first gen 7\'s.
Lots of people seem to think the rotary is a liability, provided you get a rx with either quite low mileage or a rebuilt one the engine should be fine.
If you remember to change engine oil every 3K and oil filter every 6k(for good measure) and service the rx as usual you should be ok.
If you are after a single turbo rx remember this will wear the engine down quicker than the standard TT setup as more pressure is applied, obviously hp figures are comparative too.
I have had my rx for early 2 yrs now and the only real problem i had was when the rad split due to being too close to the intercooler and banging together, after that nothing :D
Oh welcome to the club matey,
Gurj :wave
Try and get one that has been compression tested this way you have a bit of an indication of how the engine is.
thanks for the reply\'s, do many of you use your fd\'s as an everyday car or is it just for weekend use? Alot of people have been telling me to upgrade to an mr2 tubby as you can use it as an everyday car which I would need to really but I just am in love with rx7 looks.
Hi :wave
The Naturally aspirated wankels seem to last well, both of mine did over 120,000miles before need attentio. The turbo charged ones lead a harder life and tend to encounter problems around the 60k/10year mark.
Things to look out for :-
Make sure its using oil, a rotary thats not using oil is a rotary in trouble.
Check it out thoughroughly for rust, it will be there somewhere!
I hope you find one you like, the FB\'s are appreciating at the momnet (good ones) so if you play your cards right you could get a really good deal!
Oh yeah, moving this to the correct section! :D
