Painted them at the weekend - took flppin\' hours to do and that\'s with leaving them fitted! Not perfect but different, used Hammerite Satin, Powder Blue. Did \'em over two days - started late on both days and ended up painting in the dark - not good.
Ian. :wave
nice 1 :) Now i can know what to expect cos i was gonna do the same to mine... I bought the paint from Halfords weeks ago but got stuck doing other work to my car. And now its always raining so i dunno when to do it cos i cant really fit the car in the garage... Cos my garage has turned into a warehouse for misc tat. Think the paint i got was a darker shade of blue to yours. It was like the only spray on hi temp paint halfords had. I didnt really wanna consder using hammerite cos all the 1s of hammerite always seem 2 b paint on not spray on and i dont trust my crap brush work.
Cheers Paul :) . The colour choice was an impulse because the weather was so nice, also it was the only satin hammerite blue this particular shop had in. TBH I would repaint them if I felt the need but I\'m happy enough for now - it\'s different and more importantly, keeping the weather at bay!
I chose satin cos\' I\'d heard that the gloss hammerite paints can \'dull\' with heat(?) but I don\'t know how true that is. In any case its not like I\'ve got carbon brakes!!
Spraying was not an option of mine as I\'d decided I didn\'t want to remove the calipers, and I wouldn\'t worry about \'crap brush work\' mate, the castings are reasonably rough and it\'s not as though they are easy to scrutinise. Hope the weather gives u abreak so you can paint \'em. :cheers
Ian.
For myself I chose the nearest coloured Hammerite to the blue of the car. Painted by brush with calipers in situ and did the dreaded hubs as well. They were done six months ago and are showing no signs of wear, rust or discolouration from heat and believe ne they get heated enough at times.
Looking good guys.
Been thinking about doing this to mine for ages now. Did you sand/smooth down the calipers first at all? or just paint them as they were?
Adam
The calipers are cast and I am afraid you would need to grind and polish them to get them any where near smooth. Just use a nice thick coat of textured Hammerite and it helps to fill in any small imperfections and as Ian says, unless you get on your hands and knees to peer between the spokes of the rims you are not going to see small imperfections.

Hi Adam & thanx. TBH as my calipers only had a couple of hundered miles on \'em when I did mine, I simply gave them the stiff brush treatment to remove brake pad dust. The bonus of using hammerite is that u don\'t need any primer, although u can if u want to.
As rote8 say\'s, hammerite is pretty thick stuff but hammerite recommend two coats - which I gave mine. Hammered/smooth or satin is down to individual choice but check out http://www.hammerite.co.uk for more info mate.
Glad to here it\'s resistant to heat tho\' rote8, cheers.
:D Ian.
This is I wanted to use hammerite because it meant i just applied it as opposed to cleaning it down and then spraying it and watching rust bubbles appear a week or so later...
I could take the calipers off and give them a full clean down and de-corrosion in the component cleaning bays at work but as it sounds, its alot morew work that opening a can of hammerite.... hmmm so shall i just bin the spray on paint and get a tin or hammerite, or will it b ok with spray paint and just a good clean with no priming coat??? If i run more of a risk of corrosion appearing under the spraypaint than the hammerite. I rather take the safe option... Simply cos i cant b bothered to do the caliper paint a 2nd time.
Advice???
BTW rote8 saw the RX8 decal u got on your calipers frequently in the RX8club members pics... I really would love a set just that i think u gotta order online from some guy over the other side of the water. Something i dunno if i can b bothered to do... So wondering where u picked your set up from? Just that I love the "set up" u got on your calipers... hoping to get mine to a similar likeness.
^ My advice for what its worth, is save a lot of hassle and leave \'em fitted AND use hammerite cos\' that stuff\'s been around for decades mate - my DAd put me onto that stuff when I was a kid helping him paint british m/bikes he (and later,I) owned. No primer needed but hammerite do make primers if you really must...... Two coats of top mate and your sorted. That\'s my say!
Ian. :-).

Agree wholeheartedly with Ian. Save yourself the trouble of taking them off and brush paint in situ.
The decals came from a guy over here on e-bay. Went by the name of \'ubernine\' but I believe he had to stop making them on account of Mazda threatening action.
My first use of Hammerite was brush painting an old Mini Pickup. Thinned out textured Hammerite and because it \'flows\' and produces a mottled effect, you tend not see any brush marks (Well hardly). Looked a pigs ear really but it was all we could afford at the time.

^ Hi Ray & thanx for that. BTW, did u receive my pm t\'other day re your caliper stickers? Cheers,
Ian.
Looks like i bought a wasted can of halfords hi-temp spray paint then:( but better wasted spraypaint than bubbled paint work...:(
As for the decals :(.... man... i hope he still sells them... or i gotta buy em off Polak graphics in the states... wonder how he doesn\'t get sued by Mazda and this guy off ebay does... wonder how much £££ it takes for mazda to lay off your back?
^ Paul - if you\'ve got a sellers a/c why not put the can on eBay + postage? Nowt to lose ;-).
