Title: Respray!!!!!
Post by: Rx7Chris on October 16, 2005, 08:28:30 PM
Hi Guys

My car is getting resprayed this weekend doing it myself just asking on here if anyone knows how long it will take to take the rear and front windscreen out and if you can do this job yourself or if it\'s better to get someone to do it for you???

Will you require new window seals and stuff when it comes to replacing the windows and are these readily available does anyone know??

Cheers Guys

you can take out the windows your self if you have the tools and know what you are doing...you will require new seals as the window trims become very hard over time, and when refitting will not seat nicely to the body...i always use new trims when changing the windows...also the front window is very tight on the corners and will prob need to be wired out in my experience...

no idea on the rear seal as would be mazda only...the front seal,i am going to use cavj flexwhich is a universal seal and will cover the roof edge so much better than the original trim...let me know if you get stuck could prob buy some from work and send...cheers...

Think the rear seal is about £80 from Mazda if memory serves correctly.

the front trim was around £30 and the winscreen is bonded, the rear is a combination of bolts and bonding

also how big is your workspace as you will need around 2m all the way round the car, and you will need a decent sized compressor ( i had to buy a new one ). if you are thinking of using a hobby one and a cheap gun forget it and pay someone to do it.

Hi Guys

I have experiance in spraying the workshop is 1500sq metres so big enough easily.

So is it simple to remove yourself or is it better to pay someone

the rear should be easy enough but the front looked a pain  so i ended up leaving them in, but you will have to remove the rear screen if you take off the trim. the front trim went back on ok.

other than that get someonre to remove them and refit when you finish painting.

is it same colour or complete spray, i struggled a bit with mine as i had to erect a big plastic shelter at the back of the house and its not quite as good as i wanted so i may do it again in the future.

you dont need to remove the windscreens, the rubber seal will peel away from the bodywork and you can tape it back away from the metal. Once painted remove the tape and it can take up to a week for it to fully lay back on the metal again, could save you the hassle of removing the screens...

Get them taken out and refitted by a pro. I say this for two reasons. The first is they can usaly cut out a screen without damaging the rubber, the second is they can garrantee it won\'t brake coming out and won\'t leak going back.

The guys we use here charge £40 for a remove & refit so it may be worth a ring around.

BTW Good luck with the paint job, What Paint are you using? If you want some advice for a good Cheap air dry laqure price up Glasurit Combi. I do all my odd jobs in it. It usaly costs me about £100 for 5lt with Hardner and Thinners and its nice to work with.

Taping the rubber back wasnt my idea, when i got my car resprayed the paintshop explained exactly how they were going to do it most of it.  :wave

Your all right about the glass i rang a company called ecomeny screens and he said basically you pay me £90 to take em out and if they break it isn\'t my fault.

NO THANKS

Ok..

I admit when i paint a car i do tend to use lifting tape but when you use water base its not clever as the channel under the rubber collects water.

Hey Grizzly

I use a 2pack base coat.

I use a company called fisher motor factors in lincoln

I have bought 1ltr of grey 2K Primer (1ltr because i only have to spray the bit where it\'s gone down to bare metal)

3ltrs of Ford Panther Black Metallic 2K

5ltrs of fast thinners

5ltrs of 2K Clearcoat

2.5ltrs of Hardener

Can\'t wait till i get it up there so i can start and get the interior put back in lol

My screen was hit by a stone, and the crack was spreading from 3 inches to 6. i managed to get a new screen through my insurance, but it took over 3 weeks for them to even find one! nearly a foot long by that time! I would leave well alone myself and just do the seals, Good luck mate
