Title: Turbo seals gone...help
Post by: rastasheep on October 16, 2005, 10:22:02 AM
Hi all,

I just took my hoses off that lead into the intercooler. there is alot of oil in there and it seems to be storing the in the bottom of the intercooler...

Any one got any ideas what the best thign i can do i? how serious is this? will it damage things long term if i don\'t sort it out now?

Also i would of imagined that it would be kicking black smoke out the exhaust on it but its as clear as the air in my lungs :bandit

also if one turbo goes is it a case of buying / reconditioning the2 turbos rather than the one leaking?

Thanks alot guys!

if you buy an oil catch tank then it should solve this problem. I think a little oil in the intake system is normal?

I\'ve had my fd for about 18 months now and have always had a little oil in the
pipes and nothing has gone bang yet i\'ve also heard that this is normal.

Cheers Danny

There is always light... the tunnel can be bloody long though and the light might just be a mechanic coming with a torch to tell you about another problem!! :p

Oil in the pipes is quite normal, its the way the RX7 works, if you look at your filler cap you will see two pipe coming off, they vent back into the plenum and the turbo inlet, so you will get oil residue in your system.

If you really are that worried, you can discconect the one that goes to the plenum, as this was removed on later production models, and then fit a oil catch can to the other.

aha, i have ordered an oil catch can, will fit it when it comes and see what difference that makes.....

i beleive it drives ok and pulls hard, but i have never driven any other rx7 and have had this one for just over a week. So would prob feel rapid even if it wasn\'t running right.

The oil useage seems high to me tho. i filled it up nwith oil yesturday, drove it for maybe 1 1/2 hours and already its dropped about an 1/8th of the full tank. i feel that something is wrong somewhere..........

Ok, I dont think your usage of oil is unusual. The rotary has no way of lubricating the combustion chamber, where the seals are sliding, except by adding oil to the mixture. So this oil is being burned up with the fuel.

The oil is taken from the sump and injected. The amount injected basically corresponds to the amount of fuel being used. So hard driving = more oil consumption.

So how many miles did you do in this 1 and 1/2 hours, about 90?

ditto to martiny,   to give you an idea of how much oil a rotary can burn,  i have thrown my stock oil injection system away to run premix in the petrol,  at the recomended 100 - 1 ratio,  i stick half a litre in for 50 litres of petrol.
