Title: Turbo Upgrade!!!
Post by: Rx7Chris on October 15, 2005, 04:27:50 PM
Hi Guys

Just wondering my Rex is nearly on the road now  :) (about time) but the question is i want a single turbo and don\'t realy know which one to go for and i need some help????

I realise that as my Rex is still completly standard i need reliability mods i\'m not prepared to just ram a single turbo in there without first considering the reliabilty factor.

So basically what i am asking for in you great clever people if you wouldn\'t mind is could you tell me what nice bits i should be putting in my car first.

Cheers Guys

How much power do you want?
how much boost do you want to run?
whats the purpose of the car mainly track use? mainly road odd track use?
how much lag do can you put up with?
Will you be running on stock ports?

Info on the above will help answer your original question.
Also you will need bigger injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, bigger intercooler, ecu, bigger better flowing exhaust system, boost controller.
Dependant on some of the above answers, you will also need ignition amp, colder rated spark plugs, water injection.

They reckon the stock fuel pump is good for up to 420hp @ flywheel, after this will require a bigger pump like a BNR33 or something ?

As Brian says really if you can answer his questions then we can see what you can get matey ?  :yes

Hey Guys!

Thanks a lot for your quick replies!!

Actually i forgot to mention that it allready has a Blitz Nur Spec exhaust fitted

Erm well i am totally open to ideas on what boost and stuff i want to be running.  I was looking to get around 350-400 at the wheels i know this sounds a lot!!!!

Also when the car goes in for a rebuild this is when i want the work to be done as i suppose their is no point in doing it at the moment. (make a fresh start eh)

Hope this helps you answer my question a little better i\'m fairly new to the japanese scene and have always dreamed of having a Rx7 but i understand that reliability is a main factor in keeping these cars at their optimum.

Oh and also forgot to mention it\'s mainly for road use and the odd track day.

Thanks

I think high 300\'s are achievable without going the single route, making it cheaper to do I think.

check out this thread (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17692&highlight=fastest+stock+twins)

Got some of the power figures, times etc for some motors with stock twins, if you click on some of the highlighted names it will link to to their car page, and show what sort of mods they\'ve done to achieve this.

Exhaust and ecu changes (along with a small increase in boost), will net an extra 50hp on a standard car no probs :)

What your aiming for power wise is achievable with the twins, and easily (although probably more costly)achievable with a single upgrade (and all the extra bits that go with that ppl have mentioned) :)

I think Tricky\'s  mods have worked out very well and is a good guide to what can be done, i wonder if anyone has a graph of similar mods to Tricky\'s car, Pfc. exhaust, filters. etc, but running non-sequetial twins, that would be interesting,
cheers Bob

You can defo get the power with Twins.

I\'ve managed 320bhp at the wheels on just intake, exhaust(downpipe, midpipe) and Apexi ECU :)

With WI, intercooler, etc more power will be poss and reliablity will be increased.

Look at Warthog\'s motor 380ish bph at the wheels :god

Prepare for having some deep pockets!

Might be worth looking at non seq turbo conversion if your doing alot of track days.

Cheers Rich

you probably need to get the engine and then decide how much room youve got left, how much money to spend and how much power you want.

I think space will be your biggest test ?

Too large a turbo and there\'s no space left for the rest of the stuff, water injection would prob be a good idea as rotaries do run very warm and if its going in the back then you need either lots of cold air ducts coming through or water injection, preferably both.

Others with more knowledge would deffo know what the deal is.
