Title: Few problems
Post by: MissRX7 on October 14, 2005, 12:59:16 PM
Hi guys :wave

Iv had my UK FD for about a month now it seems to be running fine and i love it to bits but iv noticed that when I start it up from warm it revs right up to 4k then back down again it hunts like this for about 10 seconds then after that it idles fine. is this normal??
Please note this is only when I start it up from warm it runs fine cold and fine in traffic it can be so embarrassing especially when I have to make a petrol stop and I get evil looks because everyone thinks im revving it like that :eek

Second problem........ I was on my way to work this morning and heard a grinding like noise coming from my front wheel its very loud and has only just started doing it but it seems to drive fine and breaks seem ok any ideas what it could be??

Thanks for your help im not very mechanically minded   :D

The hunitng sounds like a vacuum leak or a problem with the fast idle from cold, could be worth getting it checked out, re-worx in portsmouth are good lads they should be able to get it sorted.

Second problem could be a wheel bearing...

The warm starting is normal i think, all uk cars (and some jap ones maybe) have a fast cold start thing (hmmm technical head on) so when you start the car it automatically revs high to warm it up faster. when mine is warm and i have stopped at a garage, mine to goes all the way up to 4k then back down then up, it has something to do with the engine idle setting being low and interferring with the Apexi idle setting (i assume yours has one :(   ) I get some really funny looks aswell, but the best thing to do is to start it then get out, and watch peoples faces as it jusy sits there revving all by itself like somehting out of knight rider :evillaugh hang on a minute it is Friday :cheers
So i wouldnt worry at all about it, And thats what i was told from the man him self Mr Carl Hayward, so there!! :wave

I\'m pretty new to RX-7s so I\'m not pretending to be knowledgable, but my experience of wheel bearings is that they normally fail pretty gradually, and drone on for thousands of miles before causing any problems. I wonder whether there is some grit caught underneath a pad, or something else come loose and scraping against the disc. I would jack it up and spin the wheel over by hand to see if I could feel where it is coming from.

we get quite a few cars in at work with small stones/gravel lodged between the brake caliper and disc, makes a nasty sound but rarely causes damage?

do you have or use a gravel driveway or been on a temporary surfaced road?

another thing to check is that generally the inner brake pad wears quicker than the outer, so if you\'ve had a peek thru your wheels at the pads they may look ok but the inner one could be \'metal to metal\'?

oh and in my experience wheel bearings are often a droning noise that gets louder with speed?

Hi Miss,
My rex only goes up to about 1200 when starting from warm, (about 1500 whan starting from cold,) then setles down to about 900 tickover in gear with foot on clutch, if i put the gear knob in nuetral it slows to about 700, and i am quite happy with this which i think is normal for a rex, i wonder if the noise from the front end may be brake pads worn out,
Good luck Bob

might sound daft but when it revs like that next time, tap the accelerator and it should die back down to normal..This is not normal behaviour by the way. It shouldn`t rev like that when warm. when starting from cold it should rev to about 3000revs for 10 or so seconds then die down to about 1500rpm. It has happened to me once but never again so i didn`t bother to fix it

Quote from: G@NDYit has something to do with the engine idle setting being low and interferring with the Apexi idle setting

I think you\'re spot on on this one.  The default idle settings on the Apexi sometimes conflict with each other causing this bouncing between low and high revs for a while.

Max @ re:worx should be able to sort this out with little trouble.
