Title: Charge Cooler Update
Post by: FD3UK on October 13, 2005, 06:47:26 PM
Some of you will know I have done a charge cooler install with the charge cooler rad in the engine bay. I had an AAV fitted on top of the Charge cooler, but it was always weeping.

I have now mounted a small expansion tank with bottom feed going to the bottom hose of the rad and a breather running form the top of charge cooler to the top of tank. I have a zero pressure cap on the tank and have left enough head to allow heat expansion.

First impressions are very good, no chance of any air locks now. :)  Still might have to go for the more traditional method of mounting charge cooler rad in front of main rad though, still get heat soak in still traffic :(

yup, just the job :)

Was the expansion tank off the shelf or a custom job? Hope to see it on Saturday (and steal it) ;)

What valve have you used to plumb into the PWR cooler to bleed of the air. Or is it just an open one.?? :wave
How did you work out the position of it so that no damage was done to the internal rad.???
More pics please of that problem solving bit.  :wave

Hi Rob, yes I just bought one of the shelf got it from HERE (http://www.nfauto.co.uk/cbs_products_new.htm) I could not make it for that money....   I was very impressed with the quallity. I will have to keep my eye on it on sat. though :)

Worthog, There is no valve, just a line from the charge cooler tank to top of expansion tank. I orginally had a small AAV there but it was always weeping.

There is a gap between the outside skin and internal air pipes, I drilled a small hole to start with then opened out and tapped 1/8BSPT.

I now have system running on zero pressure as I found before that there was plenty of flow with the cap off but it stalled out with heat expansion pressure build up.

Yes, ref the pressure build up. Thats why I changed to the same powerful EWP that I have for my water pump on the engine. It seems to have worked fine and I am only seeing a minor amount of air in the system due to water cavitation. I just want to sort out a simple bleed system.

Sy, thank you, good talking to you as well. On average temps are between 30-40C, but will rise to 60c sat in traffic for a long time I.E. waiting to get out of Santa Pod :(
